A Reading Report of Pride and Prejudice
The book I read this semester was Pride and Prejudice. The writer of Pride and Prejudice was Jane Austen, an English writer, who was born in England in 1775. She also had other famous works, such as her first work Sense and Sensibility (1811), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818), and Persuasion (1818).
Pride and Prejudice was written in 1813, and it was her second work. It tells us about the love story of Darcy and Elizabeth. The oldest of the Bennets’ five unmarried daughters——Jane, met Mr. Bingley, who was an easygoing man and had rented the manor of Netherfield Park, at a ball, and gradually fell in love with him. Meanwhile, her younger sister——Elizabeth, met Mr. Bingley’s best friend Mr. Darcy, who was very rich, at the same ball. Different from his friend, Mr. Darcy was less pleased with the evening and haughtily refused to dance with Elizabeth, which made everyone see him as an arrogant and obnoxious man, especially Elizabeth. However, with many things happened, Mr. Darcy found himself had been deeply attracted by Elizabeth and he had been in love with her. Then Elizabeth met a handsome young soldier, who was friendly towards Elizabeth and told her how Darcy cruelly cheated him out of an inheritance. Later, to Jane’s dismay, the Bingleys and Darcy left Netherfield and returned to London. That spring, Elizabeth met Darcy again when she went to see her good friend. Not wanting to withhold his feelings any more, Darcy made a proposal of marriage, and thought that she would not refuse. But Elizabeth did. She told him that she considered him as an arrogant and unpleasant man, and she criticized him for urging Bingley away from Jane and disinheriting Wickham. Later, Darcy gave her a letter, which told her that he did urge Bingley to keep distance from Jane, for he thought that Jane did not love Bingley so much. As for Wickham, he said that he was a liar, and the cause of their disagreement was that Wickham had tried to elope with his sister Georgiana Darcy. This letter caused Elizabeth to take a fresh look at Darcy. Later, she went on another journey with the Gardiners, who took her to Pemberley, Darcy’s estate, which made her learn more things about Darcy. Then she received a letter from Jane, saying that their younger sister Lydia had eloped with Wickham and that they had lived together without getting married, which would have very bad influence on their family, especially her four unmarried sisters. Not knowing what to do, Elizabeth was very sad. Fortunately, Darcy found them and gave Wickham a lot of money to make him marry Lydia. Knowing this, Elizabeth began to realize that she had fallen in love with Darcy. Soon, Bingley returned to Netherfield again, so did Darcy. Bingley made a proposal to Jane, and she accepted. After Elizabeth’s refusing, Darcy changed a lot. Later, when Darcy and Elizabeth went out and walked together, he told her that his feelings had not changed since the spring. Finally, she accepted his proposal, and both Jane and Elizabeth were married.
There is no doubt that Pride and Prejudice is Jane Austen’s great work, it contained one of the most popular love stories in English literature.
At that time, property and social position were a very important part of life and marriage. That was why Darcy was so proud of his social status, that was why he was so hesitated when he found himself was in love with Elizabeth, that was why Bingley’s sister looked down upon the Bennets, that was why she always laughed at Elizabeth and tried to stop her brother marrying Jane, that was why Lady Catherine dared to force Elizabeth to promise her that she would not marry Darcy, and that was why Elizabeth had prejudice against Darcy at the very beginning of the story.
However, although she was born in a middle-class family, Elizabeth did not succumb to this kind of social attitude. She laughed at Darcy’s pride at first and refused to dance with him, she refused Darcy’s proposal and criticized him for urging Bingley away from Jane, she disregarded Miss Bingley’s bad words and encouraged Jane to love Bingley, and she refused to follow Lady Catherine’s unreasonable demands.
She was Elizabeth. She liked reading books; she was intelligent, lovely and clever, although she did have shortcomings. She loved her family and friends, she was the girl Darcy loved, she was the reason why I liked the novel so much and wanted to read it again, she dared to pursue true love and happiness, and she was the one I appreciated.
I appreciated her, for she dared to search for equality, I appreciated her, for she had her own idea on what true love and happiness were, I appreciated her, for she knew what she wanted and what she did not want, I appreciated her, for she could think independently, and I appreciated her, for she could be just herself, even at that time.
No one is perfect, even though we have been changing ourselves and making progress all the time. So we should know clearly what we need and what we want, learn to be ourselves and always stick to our dreams.
That is what I have learned from this novel.
