As is known to us all, the Britain once had a fame of the Empire on which the sun never set, which clearly shows how strong and prosperous the Britain was in the 17th century. In fact, all the British people are very proud of its glorious history, just like us Chinese. It is obvious that the history of the UK has an inevitable influence on its modern foreign policies, but how? Now, let’s talk about this further.
Its relationship with the USA
We all know that America was one of the colonies of the Britain before it became politically independent. However, since the Second World War, the USA, along with the former Soviet Union, replaced the Britain’s status in the world. As the Britain’s economic system was badly damaged in the war, the world market which was founded on the pound was difficult to maintain. Thus the USA gradually established a capitalist monetary system which based on the US dollar.
Though the USA took the place of the Britain, the UK seems to be friendly to the US. Furthermore, we often find that the UK follows the steps of the US and always support it in international affairs. For example, Britain supported the U.S. war on Iraq while most of the other countries were strongly against. As far as I’m concerned, the reasons are as follows. In the first place, since the USA was independent from the UK, both of them share a lot in common, especially in their political opinions. What’s more, the similar ideology and culture make it easy and convenient for them to communicate with each other. Last but not least, as the UK is not as powerful as it was before, it needs the support from the US in order to expand its international influence.
No matter how we judge those UK’s modern policies which are related to the USA, we can come to the conclusion that the UK and the USA have a close relationship, but why? Obviously, the former history between the two of them is enough to answer the question.
Its membership in the European Union
The Britain’s attitude towards European integration is quite unique. During the early postwar period, the Britain deliberately kept a distance from it. Then, forced by the severe situation, the UK applied to join the European Community. However, the Britain has always been a difficult partner country. The current British government's policy towards the European Union is neither fully acceptable nor determined to quit from it.
According to me, this phenomenon has a deep root of its history. Since the Britain was one of the most powerful countries in the world, it is difficult for the government to make its mind to share a certain degree of its national sovereignty with the EU government. Besides, Britain's economic policy and social welfare system are greatly different from European continental countries. As a matter of fact, the UK's economic structure is more close to the U.S. Also, the economic cycle is synchronized with the United States, but not synchronized with the European continental countries. All the factors together make the UK play a relatively conservative role in the European Union.
Then let’s focus on the question again. How does the History of the UK Influence its Modern Foreign Policies? As we all know, what has happened to a person before has a great effect on his attitude towards life. It is the same with a country. The glorious history sometimes makes the UK be in a dilemma. On the one hand, its history enhances its people's national self-esteem and self-confidence when the country deals with the international issues. However, on the other hand, the inherent pride limits the politicians’ vision. What I want to point out is that no matter what the foreign policies will be, they are all made to serve the country and its leading class. The basic starting point and standpoint are its national interests.
What’s more, we are supposed to be objective when we are judging some historical phenomena. It would be much better if we could take most of the background information into consideration.
