Passage Two:
In Britain, winter is not very cold and summer is not very hot. There is not a great difference between summer and winter. Why is this?
Britain has a mild winter and cool summer because it is an island country. In winter the sea is warmer than the land. The winds from the sea bring warm air to Britain. In summer the sea is cooler than the land. The winds from the sea bring cool air to Britain.
The west winds blow over Britain. They are wet winds. They bring rain to Britain. Britain has a lot of rain all the year. The west of Britain is wetter than the east. The winds must blow over the highland in the west. They drop more rain there. The east of Britain is drier than the west.

Passage Three:
Mark was a farmer who lived in a village far away. One day he became very ill and everyone thought he would die. They sent for a doctor, who arrived two days later and examined the sick man. The doctor asked for a pen and some paper to write down the name of the medicine, but there was no pen or paper in the village, because no one could read or write.
The doctor picked up a piece of burnt wood from the fire. He wrote the name of the medicine on the door of the house. “Get this medicine for him,” he said, “and he will soon get better.”
Mark’s family and friends did not know what to do. They could not read the strange writing. Then the village baker had an idea. He took off the door of the house, put it on his cart, and drove to the nearest town. He bought the medicine, and Mark was soon well again. He would not let anyone wash the magic words from the door.

Passage Five:
Mr. Clack was about sixty. He had no children and lived in a short, broken house. He raised some chickens, pigs and sheep. And he grew many orange trees around his house. He did his best to save everything and now had a lot of money. But he never bought any expensive things.
One day, he worked in his garden. Unluckily, his jacket was caught on a branch and it was broken. He couldn’t mend it himself. But he didn’t want to spend money mending it. Looking at the jacket, he didn’t know what to do. Suddenly he remembered an old woman who lived next to him. He wanted to let her come to mend the jacket, but he was afraid she would drink something at his home. So he went to see the old woman with his broken jacket.
“Excuse me, Mrs. Brown,” said the old man, “Could you mend the jacket for me, please?”
“Certainly, Mr. Clack.” answered the old woman.
Half an hour later, the jacket was mended. Mr. Clack said, “Thank you very much, Mrs. Brown. I should give you something as a reward. But the oranges are not ripe. The tomatoes are green. Though I should give you a chick, they are all too small.”
The old woman knew him well. She said with a smile on her face, “It doesn’t matter, Mr. Clack. You can give me two chickens.”
