About this translation practice
Our translation practice timely provides me an access to train my translation skills and shows me the procedure of translation. And in my opinion, this is also the aim of this practice, to give us an opportunity to deeply understand what does translation mean and how to be good at it. I believe I can benefit much from this practice.
Translation is not an easy work. Translation is the communication of the meaning of a source-language text by means of an equivalent target-language text. Translators always risk inappropriate spill-over of source-language idiom and usage into the target-language translation.

How to balance the source-language and the target-language is the essential problem. Translators are like sculptors. They transform each of work into beautiful sculptures , which need good skills and great patience.
Last year, I had a course of English-Chinese Translation, in which I had a lot of interests and also met some obstacles to make me aware of my shortages. Honestly speaking, after nearly ten years English learning, I have no courage to say that I am good at English, and what shames me most is the course of English-Chinese Translation, where I found my poor in Chinese.
I still have a long way to go.

My two source-language texts have been established. One is an essay written by Zhou Guoping, who is a famous chinese writer, and the other is a thesis about family policy discourse, which I found in our school library.
I ever read Zhou's essays in my junior school. And, since I went to the college, I read them less. However, the impressions that his essays left are still on me. I love the tone of his essays and most of his essays focus on life itself which is hard to tell as a normal people, and he can explain it in a gentle way and with a peace mind. It is a way that I always have been dreaming of in. Therefore, I chose Zhou's finally.

As to the other text, it took me quite a long time to make sure. At first, I really had no clue. I tried some theses about tourism, environment and education, but I don't think these thesis explain their new point of each field. At the end, I chose this thesis on the basis of my own interest.
Li, Hao and me, three of us make up as a team. Though our texts of translating Chinese into English are different, we shared the the same thesis "Between Reforms and Birth Rates: Germany, Japan, and Family Policy Discourse" which is written by Martin Seeleib-Kaiser and Tuukka Toivonen.

I started my translation work from this week. Sometimes, it is easy to understand the general ideas of the source-language texts. However, big obstacles wait at the end. For instance, there are some idiomatic usages and technical terms in the text, and it is really a hard work to make sure if these translation are proper or can these be easily understood by the readers. As the main idea of my translation is about German, I checked some books about its education, economy and and other backgrounds. But our school library have limited resource. Therefore, most of them comes come from the Internet.

My glossaries are The following: family policy, employment-oriented, human capital, Christian Democrats, political discourse, interpretative pattern, incremental changes, Volksgemeinschaft, Red-Greed government, Family Minister, earnings-related parental leave benefit and so on. I have done most of my translation work, but there are still several words that I can not sure about. I need check more materials before finalizing the text.
My first task now is to certain that there are no obvious mistakes in my text, and revise it at the last period.
I still need concentrate my forces to find the perfect meaning of these glossaries.

I have finished the work of translating Chinese into English. These two languages have different forms of expressing. In English much information is carried by the use of auxiliaries and by verb inflections: is/are/were, eat/eats/ate/eaten, etc. Chinese, on the other hand, is an uninflected language and conveys meaning through word order, adverbials or shared understanding of the context. The concept of time in Chinese is not handled through the use of different tenses and verb forms, as it is in English.
Chinese does not have articles, so difficulties with their correct use in English are very common. And shamefully, this is one of my biggest obstacles.

After editing my teammates' translation and correcting some of their mistakes, I finally finish my work which lasts
for such a long time. And the process of translating emerges in my mind now. I understand that translation is a serious work. Sometimes, I added my own imagination into understanding of the source-language text, and persuaded myself the rightness at the same time. In the editing process, these mistakes were pulled out. It is very lucky for me to realize where the problems come from, from which can lead my translation skills to a higher level.
I will continue to be strict with myself and keep an open mind on the way of learning.
