According to research conducted by the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies at Mahidol University, Thailand, there is a marked difference in the attitudes of employees towards work, depending on whether or not they perceive their work environment to be ‘fair’. Labelled the ‘Fairness Quotient’, this research assessed the responses of employees in a variety of fields, rating their reactions of the treatment they received from their employers, and the sense of fairness they experienced and expected.
Unsurprisingly, the group with the highest responses were those who believed they were treated fairly, while the lowest score belonged to those who felt they were disadvantaged or denied proper treatment. The data showed, however, that this fairness quotient had a direct effect on the employees’commitment to their work. Those who perceived fairness in theirworkplace also felt a higher level of job satisfaction, were bettermotivated and believed more strongly in the values of thecompany.
Comparatively, those who felt their work environment lackedfairness had a greater degree of job insecurity, and were lessmotivated and committed. Though these results were particularlyevident in the survey’s Asian respondents, the overall implicationswere consistent, irrespective of ethnicity or background.
