After the First World War, some soldiers returned to their village. Most of them managed to 21 quite well, but one — Francois Lebeau, who had been wounded and never recovered his 22 —was unable to work regularly. 23 he became penniless. Yet he was too proud to accept help from others.
Once each year the soldiers held a get-together dinner. On one of these 24 they met in the home of Jules Grandin, who had made 25 money and grown self-important. Grandin showed them a large gold coin, about 26 age and value he kept talking for long. Each man examined it with interest as it passed around the long table. Later, however, when Grandin wanted to get it back, the coin was 27 .
Instantly there 28 questions and denials (否认). Finally the village lawyer suggested everyone be searched, to which all 29 —except Lebeau. His companions(同伴) looked at him with surprise.
“You refuse, then?” asked Grandin.
Lebeau turned red. “Yes,” he said. “I can’t allow it.”
“Do you realize,” asked Grandin, “what your refusal 30 ?”
“I did not steal the gold piece, 31 I will not submit to such a search,” Lebeau answered.
One by one, the rest of the group turned out their pockets. When the coin failed to appear, 32 was focused on Lebeau again.
From that day on, people turned their eyes away when they met him. He grew 33 , and when his wife died not long afterward, no one knew or cared whether 34 was from poverty or shame.
A few years later, Grandin made some changes in his house. A workman found the gold coin, buried in dirt between pieces of the wood floor in the room 35 the reunion dinner had been held.
Grandin was a just man. When he found Lebeau was not 36 , he was quick to decide what to do. Hurrying to Lebeau’s home, he told him of the 37 discovery of the coin and apologized to him.
“But,” he concluded, “why did you not 38 yourself to be searched then?”
Lebeau looked at Grandin 39 . “Because I was a thief,” he said. “For weeks my family and I had not had enough to eat—and my 40 were full of food that I had taken from the table to carry home to my wife and hungry children.”

Many families take their children on vacation. They will usually travel for a few days or weeks during school breaks. But Julie and Tim Rivenbark planned a longer vacation with their two children—the Rivenbark family is on a one-year trip around the world. They plan to visit 30 countries in all.
Right now, the four travellers are about halfway through their trip. Ms. Rivenbark says they are trying to see as much of the world as they can. She says “we have been through Europe, southern Africa, now we are kind of working our way through Asia. So we have been to a bunch of big cities, like Dubai, Johannesburg, Rome and Bangkok.”
The family has also spent time floating in kayaks(long narrow boats) in Italy, flying in hot air balloons in Myanmar, hiking to the Everest Base Camp in Nepal and going on a journey to see or hunt animals in South Africa.
Mr. Rivenbark says the family has also ridden on ostrich birds, elephants, and camels. But, he says, one of the most interesting experiences of the trip has been meeting new people.
“People have been extremely friendly, very welcoming and love our kids—interacting with them and their reaction to see our kids enjoying themselves in their country.”
Eleven-year old Tyler says he has enjoyed learning about the people they have met. “I learned in Africa that people have very different lifestyles compared to Americans.” His sister, 9-year-old Kara, discovered that she liked Thai food.
Ms. Rivenbark says that the extended trip teaches the children a lot more than short visits would have. “I think that the longer we travel, the more impact it has on how they see the world. I can see them changing more than they can see themselves.”
It took the family a year to prepare for the trip. They had to sell their house and cars. Ms. Rivenbark quit her job and her husband is using unpaid leave. They carry small bags filled with lightweight clothing and whatever else they need. Ms. Rivenbark says she enjoys being able to carry everything she needs on her back. She says she does not miss the things she has back home. “What has become more important is making these memories as a family and taking those with us instead.” Tyler and Kara each have iPads so they can communicate with teachers to stay current with their schoolwork. Tyler is also creating a 365-day video blog.
The Rivenbarks will continue to head east for the next six months. They plan to visit Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Australia. To follow their adventures, visit their website: earthtrekkers.com.

Scientists today are making greater effort to study ocean currents (洋流) . Most do it using satellites and other high-tech equipment. However, ocean expert Curtis Ebbesmeyer does it in a special way -- by studying movements of random floating garbage. A scientist with many years’ experience, he started this type of research in the early 1990s when he heard about hundreds of athletic shoes washing up on the shores of the northwest coast of the United States. There were so many shoes that people were setting up swap meets to try and match left and right shoes to sell or wear.
Ebbesmeyer found out in his researches that the shoes — about 60,000 in total — fell into the ocean in a shipping accident. He phoned the shoe company and asked if they wanted the shoes back. As expected, the company told him that they didn't. Ebbesmeyer realized this could be a great experiment. If he learned when and where the shoes went into the water and tracked where they landed, he could learn a lot about the patterns of ocean currents.
The Pacific Northwest is one of the world's best areas for beachcombing(海滩搜寻) because winds and currents join here, and as a result, there is a group of serious beachcombers in the area. Ebbesmeyer got to know a lot of them and asked for their help in collecting information about where the shoes landed. In a year he collected reliable information on 1, 600 shoes. With this data, he and a colleague were able to test and improve a computer program designed to model ocean currents, and publish the findings of their study.
As the result of his work, Ebbesmeyer has become known as the scientist to call with questions about any unusual objects found floating in the ocean. He has even started an association of beachcombers and ocean experts, with 500 subscribers from West Africa to New Zealand. They have recorded all lost objects ranging from potatoes to golf gloves.

When Jacob Porter-Jones found himself struggling to get a job he decided to open up his own clothing shop – in his mother’s front room.
The 21-year-old young man convinced his mother Nicky to halve the size of her sitting room so he could set up his business selling men’s designer clothes and style books. A sign outside the three-storey house is the only thing which gives any indication that the ordinary house in Poole is the home of the Journeyman Union shop.
Customers have to walk through the front door and turn left in the hallway to enter Jacob’s shop with a changing room and Jacob uses a laptop computer, a credit card machine and a box for his stuff.
The 36ft by 14ft front room was divided into two by a wall to make space for the Journeyman Union and a door was put up in the hallway to block off the rest of the five bed house.
Jacob was previously training to be a tailor in London but had to give it up as he couldn’t afford the bus fare from his grandparents’ home in Oxford. He moved back to his mum’s home in Poole last December and came up with the idea of running his own shop.
Jacob said, “I was training as a tailor at Newham College in London and doing an apprenticeship (学徒) while staying with family”. “The bus fare was just too expensive on an apprentice’s wage, so I had to move back home. It took me ages to find a job and then I finally found part-time work in a bar, but I wanted a full-time job.”
Jacob said that he was putting off the idea of going to university when he realized that setting up and running his own shop could be done at a small amount of the costs of fees.“People are coming out of university with certificates and qualifications yet not getting anything for it, and coming away with 50,000 pounds worth of debt.”
The 21-year old has a true passion for clothes and added that the shop is something he has always wanted to do and that he one day wants to make his own clothes. His mother Nicky, a 48-year-old company director and single mother of four, said, “I couldn’t financially help Jacob go to university but I hope I am helping him by allowing him to have some of my front room.”
Jacob’s brother Reuben, 12 and sister Martha, 14, still live with Nicky while third brother Noah recently moved out. Nicky does not see a problem with having the shop in her home and said she is proud of her son’s achievement.
“At the beginning people were a bit concerned thinking they were walking into our house, but we have a small hallway separating the two.”
“I wanted to give him the opportunity to realize his dreams; it’s down to him now to do the hard work to get it up and properly running.” “I am really proud of him.”
Jacob has taken out public liability (责任) insurance and is waiting council approval to change the use of the residential home into a commercial premises. He has also received his first bill for business rates at 1,200 pounds for his first three months of trading.
“We opened at the beginning of April and sell men’s clothing, footwear, and publications, with the idea that it’s the quality of the item that matters, it will last 30 or 40 years”. “So far I’ve taken about 3,000 pounds since April and I get a handful of customers a day and double that at weekends”. “It’s a slow start but everyone has got to start somewhere.”

第二节:下面文章中有5处(第61–65题)需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题,并在答题纸上将相应选项的标号涂黑。选项中有一项是多余选项。
A. Separate Your Actions B. Escape Now and Then
C. Allow Yourself to Be Weak D. Stop Expecting Everything to Be Perfect
E. Relieve Pressure by Firmly Saying "No" F. Slow Down Your Life
How to Simplify Your Life
Less is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, get rid of junk instead of piling it up, relax instead of stressing, slow down instead of speeding up. Apply these principles in your everyday life in a conscious way. You will then find yourself well along on your journey to simplification.
61.__________
When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn't even know you had. Just imagine: you are at a fair and you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you keep grabbing one and then the other, it will take forever, because one of them will keep slipping out from under your arm and running off. But if you tie one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run back and get the other one, and with great determination, carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of success.
62._________
The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations. In the modern nuclear family, the expectations that formerly would have been shared among all the relatives are now concentrated on the individual partner. If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for all the things you need to do, then it's not because the day has too few hours, but because you have too many activities. A simple fact that overloaded people often tend to forget. The solution is equally simple: refuse to accept so many work assignments in your private life or your working life.
63.____________
"I can handle stress" is regarded as a positive statement in the world of work. People who can handle stress are given more and more to cope with -- until one day they break.Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you are under more stress than you can cope with. These
If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress. Say quite openly, "I can't manage that. "
.__________
“If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, more clever, then I would be happier. " This is a dream that makes a lot of people ill, depressed, and unhappy. Life has its flaws, defects, corners, and edges. Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life. Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous: driving a car; crossing the road. But life doesn't consist entirely of these things. In among them there is a lot of room for small and large mistakes.
65._________
Successful people all have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work. Find out which places improve your creativity. For me it's the train. When I know that I'm going to be traveling for four hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door, I find nay mind is free and I can read or write complex articles. There can be problems working on the train, of course : if the person sitting opposite you keeps talking away, or if train traps make you tired ( some people fall asleep after a few miles).
