“When it comes to Earth, there’s no time to waste,” says the Earth Day Network. And that is right. Protecting our environment is very important, and World Earth Day was 1 in 1970 to raise people’s environmental awareness. On April 22, People around the world celebrate Earth day.
Every year there is a special 2 , and this year it is “Trees for Earth”, so Earth Day will be all about planting trees. Their goal is to plant 7.8 billion trees 3 the next five years.
That’s a big goal, and you might wonder 4 trees are so important. Well for one, they can help stop climate change. Carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) is a chemical in our atmosphere, but 5 make too much of it. Each person makes about 2.3 tons a year, which is bad for the environment.
Well guess what! Trees 6 carbon dioxide and protect the air quality. Planting new trees is important because people cut down 7 trees. Last year, there were 3 trillion(万亿) trees in the 8 , about 139 billion in China. But according to Time, the world’s total number has been 9 cut in half since human civilization (文明) began. That’s because 15 billion trees are cut down every year.
So we need to plant more to replenish (补充) the ones we’ve lost. One tree can take in 48 pounds (21.8kg) of carbon dioxide per year. And it’s still one of the cheapest and 10 ways to get rid of carbon dioxide.
But don’t forget that you can also help the environment by cutting down on how much energy or water you use every day. Every little thing helps!

13、Have you ever wondered what goes through your mind when you choose where to sit in a new classroom? Or in a waiting room full of strangers? Or on a bus? Researchers have found out some interesting facts.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, we prefer to sit closer to people like ourselves. Girls sit by girls and boys sit by boys. Adults sit together and young people choose another young person to sit near. But it goes further than this. We even choose to sit near someone who looks like us. People with glasses are more likely to sit near other people with glasses. People with long hair sit closer to other people with long hair.
We seem to believe that people with similar habits or hobbies will share similar attitude and we are more likely to be accepted by people like ourselves or even, we think we may be safer with people who look like us. Sometimes that’s true but it's a pity if we always stick to the same people, the same group. The danger in always staying in our comfort zone (舒适区)is that we just recycle the same opinions, the same tastes and the same ideas. We lose the chance to learn something new, find out about interesting things, hear funny stories and discover difference.
When we always stick to the same people, how can we ever break down the barriers which prevent us from getting to know people with different ideas? And how can we avoid the ignorance (无知),which too often leads to prejudice (偏见) and even fear? If instead you want to live in a society that opens to changes and new things and different opinions, be the cat among the pigeons.
Move out of your comfort zone. Go and sit next to someone different. And don't just sit there in silence. Say hello. Ask a question. Start a conversation. That’s how we make friends. That’s how we learn about people. That’s how we open our minds to new ideas. That's how we live an exciting life.

A.is like themselves B.has a sense of humor

C.find out more interesting things D.discover differences among themselves
3.The underlined word “barriers” in Paragraph 4 means .
A.doors B.difficulties C.ideas D.rules
4.Why does the writer ask us to meet people of different kinds?
A.Because we feel safer and share similar tastes and ideas.
B.Because we can enjoy an interesting and different ideas.
C.Because we can say hello and ask them questions.
D.Because we want to live in a society full of humour.
5.What is the title of this passage?

14、One day I got into a taxi and we took off for the airport.
We were driving in the right way when suddenly a black jeep jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver had to stop the car at once, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car started shouting at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy, and I mean, he was really friendly.
So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost destroyed your car and sent us to the hospital!” This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck(垃圾车).”
He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of anger(愤怒). As their garbage gets more, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you. Don’t take it seriously. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their garbage and pass it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

17、Learning to love reading
Taking public transportation in the United States, you can often see people reading books on their way to school or work. But in China, I rarely (很少地) see people reading during their free time.
Are people’s attitudes toward reading different here? Not really. Data (数据) released by Amazon China in December 2017 show that Chinese people still read a lot. They simply prefer e-books over regular books.
However, other data show that reading is still more popular in the us than in China. Is there a reason for this difference? I’m not sure. What I do know is that China has a rich history of literature (文学). From classic novels like Romance of the Three Kingdoms (《三国演义》) to the modern science-fiction books The Three-Body Problem (《三体》), and many other styles, Chinese authors have created many fantastic written works.
Perhaps the difference starts from childhood. Reading textbooks and doing homework can make you feel quite tired. By the time you finish it, you might not feel like reading for fun. Chinese students definitely (肯定) have to read more and do more homework than US students. So it’s no wonder that they might not want to read much in their spare time.
But learning to love reading can be great. Reading can open doors to places, people and ideas that you cannot imagine. Even just a single book has the power to change your own personal beliefs and attitudes. Where will your next book take you?
1.From Paragraph 1, what do we know about people in the US?
A.Most people take public transportation to work.
B.Students have homework to do on their way to school.
C.Many of them have the habit of reading.
D.They read books that are left behind on public transportation.

A.Chinese people’s attitudes toward reading have changed.
B.Chinese people prefer e-books to regular books now.
C.Chinese people never read in their spare time.
D.Chinese people bought the most books from Amazon China in 2017.
4.Why is reading less popular in China, according to the author?
A.Because Chinese people prefer to watch plays instead of reading.
B.Because it’s hard to choose what to read.
C.Because Chinese people already read enough books during their childhoods.
D.Because People’s childhood experiences may influence their reading habits.
5.According to the author, reading books can ________.
A.help you learn more about schoolwork B.take too much of your time
C.make you feel tired D.change your view of the world

18、Would you like to have an electric car? We will see this kind of cars soon in America. These quiet, clean cars run on electricity. Carmakers will start selling electric cars in 2011.
The world’s population will jump from 6.8 billion to 9 billion by 2050. The need for cars will jump with it. But the oil(石油) won’t keep up with the number of cars on the road. So the price of oil will go up.
Electric cars aren’t perfect just yet. It can take eight hours to charge(充电) a car for only 100 miles of driving. And the distance(路程) that cars can go depends on driving conditions(条件). How far it travels depends on the weather and traffic.
Price is a problem, too. Electric models cost much more than oil-powered cars. The good news is that electric-car technology is getting better. As it does, the prices of this kind of cars are dropping.
To charge the car, the US Department of Energy is paying for at least 10,000 charging stations around the country. Private businesses are also getting ready for it. It will cost about $3 for each charge.
Carmakers are coming up with other ways to make the car cleaner and cheaper. Cars may run on clean diesel(柴油). So who knows what will power the car you may be driving in 10 years? The chances are that it will be something that’s clean and easy.
1.The electric cars are ________.

B.large and quiet
C.clean and quiet
2.Paragraph Two mainly tells us the reason why ________.
A.electric cars appear
B.the population is growing
C.the oil price goes up
3.How far the electric car travels depends on the ________.

C.drivers and oil
4.Why aren’t the electric cars perfect?
A.The cars don’t look nice and they’re slow.
B.The cars can’t be driven fast and they’re dangerous.
C.The cars take a long time to be charged and they cost too much.
5.From the passage we know that ________________.
A.electric cars will be more expensive
B.nobody knows what will power the cars in 10 years
C.electric cars will be used by most people in 10 years
