Earthquakes are hard to predict (预言). But do you know what to do before, during and after an earthquake? Here’s some advice:

Before an earthquake It’s necessary to prepare yourself and your family. All family members should know how to turn off gas, water and electricity and know useful telephone numbers (doctor, hospital, police, 119, etc.). Never put heavy things over beds. 

During an earthquake It’s important for each of you to stay calm. If you are indoors, quickly move to a safe place in the room such as under a strong table. The purpose is to protect yourself from objects (物体), stay away from windows, large mirrors, heavy furniture and so on. If you’re cooking, turn off the gas. If you’re outdoors, move to an open area like a playground. Move away from buildings, bridge and trees. If you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible, staying away from bridges and tall buildings. Stay in your car.

Mona Island is an amazing place to take a vacation. Some of the animals living there can’t be found anywhere else in the world. There are beautiful beaches and caves to explore (探索). The sea around the island has colorful fishes. 

Why Is Mona Island Unusual?

Mona Island is very small. The government of Puerto Rico takes care of the island and has made it a natural reserve (保护区). That means the island’s animals and plants are protected from being harmed by people. Mona Island is different from most places because people are not allowed to live there. Only a few park rangers are able to stay.

People also come to the island to get a close-up view (观看) of many kinds of fish and other sea life. They can swim deep into the water. They use special things to help them breathe (呼吸) underwater. The water is almost transparent. Through the clear water, people can see the bright colors of the fish. 

Visitors can also explore caves. Some of the caves even have paintings and drawings on the walls. This artwork was made by the Arawak and Taíno Indians who lived on the island hundreds of years ago. 

After a full day of fun activities, visitors can sit down, listen to the night sounds, and view the stars in the huge sky. Because the island is far away from other places, it is quite dark around you, and the stars are easier to see. Visitors say that watching the stars is amazing. It’s the perfect end to a perfect day.
