Angela Chang didn’t know it would be so hard to turn her singing hobby into a career. Her agent used to take her to lots of auditions(试唱)at different recording studios but the Taiwanese girl was always turned down for looking too young and small.
Chang’ s talent was at last recognized in 2002 by the Decca Record Company. When she was offered a contract she burst into tears. Two years later Chang, 21, is a star. Have you eaten too much over the holidays? You should try fidgeting for a while. Those around you might not like it, but scratching (moving your nails against a part of your body) and twitching (moving suddenly and quickly when you don’t want to) is an important way of burning up calories .
American researchers have found that some people’s squirming (continuously turn your body when nervous) and wigging (move in small movements, especially from side to side) equals several miles of slow running each day.
The scientists, based at the National Institute of Health’s laboratory in Phenix, Arizona, are studying why some people get fat and other stay slim.
In one study 177 people each spent 24 hours in a room in the institute where the amount of energy is measured by their oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. By the end of the day, some people had burned up 800 calories in toe-tapping, (moving the front part of your foot up and down) finger-drumming (hitting your fingers continuously and lightly against something hard) and other nervous habits. What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.
We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did” or “You are such a smart child”.
36. The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean_______ while “dull” in the second paragraph means _______.

D. a famous person; an ordinary person
38. A person ________ is more likely to become a genius.
A. whose parents are clever B. often thinking about difficult problems
C. often helped by his parents and teachers D. born with a good brain and putting it into active use
39. It is better for parents ________.
A. to praise and encourage their children more often
B. to be hard on their children
C. to leave their children alone with nothing to do
D. to give their children as much help as possible
40. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?
A. Parents play an important part in their children’s growth.
B. The less you use your mind the duller you may become.
C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.

Long ago God had a great many burdens which he wished to have carried from one place to another on the earth, so he asked the animals to lend a hand. But all of them began to make excuses for not helping: the elephant was too dignified; the lion, too proud; and so on. Finally the birds came to God and said, “If you will tie the burdens into small bundles, we’ll be glad to carry them for you. We are small but we would like to help.” So God fastened upon the back of each one a small bundle, and they all set out walking across the plain to their destination. They sang as they went, and did not seem to feel the weight of their burdens at all. Every day the burdens seemed lighter and lighter until the loads seems to be lifting the birds, instead of the birds carrying the burdens. When they arrived at their destination, they discovered that when they removed their loads, there were wings in their place. It was the wings that enabled them to fly to the sky.

Nowadays, after-class activities are becoming more and more popular in high schools. In our school, there are various kinds of activities, for example, arts and sports and playing football and reading stories are my favorites which do me lots of good. Besides building my body and enriching my knowledge, they also free me from the heavy work of study.
My suggestions are that students should choose the activities which interest you and suit you. To schools, they should organize more activities for students and leave students more time for activities by giving them less homework.
So, please actively take part in after-class activities, which will not only make your school life colorful, but also improve your learning.
第三节:读写任务(共1小题,满分25分)
One possible version:
Burdens Give Us Wings
The legend states that unlike other animals, the birds volunteered to help God carry the burdens to the destination merrily. Unexpectedly, wings replaced the loads afterwards, which enabled the birds to fly.
It’s true that everyone, willingly or unwillingly, carries burdens of this or that kind, and I am no exception. I am burdened with endless homework, unsatisfactory performance, and sometimes disagreements with my family. But as I always focus on the sunny side of life, I see these inevitable burdens as opportunities to learn more knowledge, gain more experience and thus grow more and more mature.
From my own perspective, taking advantage of the burdens properly, we can turn them into wings that help us fly closer and closer to our goals. For one thing, we should treat various burdens differently, only taking seriously those worth struggling for and letting go of the unimportant and unnecessary. For another, once we decide on a worthwhile goal, we should keep the faith that as long as we shoulder any loads with a light heart, we will make it eventually.
In a word, burdens can give us wings if we treat them properly.
