It is 36 secret that many children would be healthier and happier with adoptive parents(养父母)than with the parents that nature dealt them. That is especially 37 of children who remain in homes where they’re badly treated because the law blindly favors biological parents. It is also true of children who suffer for years in foster(寄养)homes 38 parents who can’t or won’t care for them but 39 to give up custody(监护)rights.

My first performance in front of an audience was coming up soon.
I tried as hard as I could to remain 36, but I had an empty feeling in my stomach. I stared down at my sweat covered, 37 hands.
I looked up again at the audience, realizing that these were 38 people. They were not just my mum and dad, who 39 say, "Good job!" even if I messed up the entire piece.
What if I had the wrong music? What if I played the wrong notes?
As it 40, I was never able to answer these questions because the spotlight was 41 for me. I grasped my hands tightly together, drying off the sweat.
Slowly I walked to the mulberry piano in the 42 of the room. It contained 88 demanding keys, which were waiting impatiently to be played.I swallowed the golfball-sized lump(隆起的) in my throat and sat down. 43, I opened the music.Next, I rested my still shaking hands on the ivory keys.
As my fingers played across the keys, I was becoming more 44 of my preparation for this moment. But the memory of my year of training came flooding back. I knew that I had practiced this piece 45 that I could play it backwards if 46 .
Although at one point I accidentally played two keys 47 the intended one, I continued to move my fingers automatically (自动的).
My eyes burned holes into the page in front of me.
There was no 48 that I was going to lose my concentration. To keep this promise to myself, I leaned 49 and focused carefully on the music.
50 1 came to the end of the page, a warning 51 inside my head: DON' T MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN YOU TURN THE PAGE!
Needless to say, I 52 myself with all my heart and mind. And, proud of my "page- turning" feat(技艺) I finished the 53 of the piece without making a single mistake.
After the final note died away, a celebration went into action 54 my head.1 had finished.I had mastered (征服)the 55.

On a cold November afternoon, my mother and I were walking home from a pizza store. We were dressed warmly and 36 with the rented video we had been dying for watch, I was feeling a little 37 , as I was carrying our shopping, bags of snacks and the 38 .

One summer night, on my way home from work, I decided to see a movie. I knew the theatre would be air-conditioned and I couldn’t face my 16 apartment.

When our family moved to the United States six years ago, none of us spoke any English. 32 we had begun to learn a few words, my mother suggested that we all should speak English at home. Everyone agreed, but our house became very 33 and we all seemed to avoid each other. We sat at the dinner table in silence, 34 that to speaking the difficult language. Mother tried to say something in English, but it 35 out all wrong and we all burnt into laughter and decided to forget it! We have been speaking Korean at home ever since.

Father listened .When Dahlia 41 talking ,he said, “It must 42 to be made fun of like this by your best friend Tina.” Dahlia 43 her father’s embrace(拥抱)and support as she cried 44 more in his arms. Then as 45 as the storm of tears began, she was finished. She got up and 46 announced, “Daddy, did you know that tomorrow Tina and I are going together to the beach? We are 47 a log house there with Adam and Tom, I will tell Tina before we go that I 48 ruin her work again, and I’m sure she will be 49 to me. ”
Why was this encounter ( sudden meeting ) so successful? How did Dahlia 50 her upset so completely and realize her responsibility in the matter 51 her own?
There were three main parts in her father’s reaction that 52 ; (A) Attention (B ) Respect (C) Trust. He gave his daughter 53 attention and took her seriously as she 54 her feelings. He respected her by not coming with words of wisdom, advice or help. He validated(证实)the feelings she 55 . A feeling of excitement overcame me as I looked around the stadium.
At 5:30 pm, two hours before game time, I walked into the locker room(更衣室). My 36 of school, music and what I planned to do on Saturday night were 37 with the simple aim to beat the football team across the field from us tonight.
Approaching my locker(衣物柜), I noticed my teammates 38 . Some rested on benches, staring up at the ceiling 39 it were a film of the opposing team’s play. Some seemed a bit more 40 , using the time to tell jokes. A few stared at the field, 41 what will happen in 120 minutes.
Our coach, Tony Severino, came out of his office at 6 o’clock. He told the team how 42 this game was for the season, between two of the state’s top teams—my school and our opposing team, Liberty High School. His words gave the team impulse(冲动)it needed to 43 .
At 7:10 pm, warm – ups finished, we went over the game 44 and discussed what we needed to do for the next three hours. The sound of the national anthem(国歌) 45 that we were only minutes from the action. Our coach usually made a final 46 . But tonight was different. On this clear night he 47 looked around the room at all the players and shouted, “Let’s go and get them.” Even 48 the “get” came out of his mouth, we were already 49 our way out of the door.
Outside, a few young fans reached to touch our hands, eager to be a 50 of our school’s winning tradition. When I smiled and 51 my hand, the young faces lit up as if they had just met Superman.
Seconds later, the team ran onto the 52 , moving as a mass of blue, in front of a packed stadium. We enjoyed a noisy 53 from fans and the fight song played by our school band. Breathing in the 54 of one of the biggest game of the year, I felt we were sure to win. I told myself, “This was what it was all about” and 55 that it was for moments like this that I loved high school football.

The worst thing is the headlines . I use the underground almost every day and watch the people travel , their heads 36 in their newspapers . The headlines today 37 suicide (自杀) bombers and of horrific attacks that they say 38 by members of our community .
Something on the journey is 39 . I am not 40 anything that would indicate I am a Muslim . I normally do not 41 it is Friday and I am on my way to prayers . 42 I sense an uneasiness in the carriage . People are 43 . No one is speaking and it must be said that no one is being 44 unfriendly towards me . But I think the 45 I get are different . I am being checked out , sized up . It is all a bit uncomfortable .
People are looking around for things and people 46 look suspicious (可疑的). I am doing it a bit 47 and in the coming days , as more claims are made about the people who did this and their aims , that feeling is likely to get 48 . As you look around the 49 , it is difficult to know what people are thinking . Some are 50 thinking “those Muslims come here and look what they do” but they 51 understand we condemn (谴责)this like everyone else .
Whoever did this didn’t 52 about who was killed or whether they were Christian or Muslim . They just had no respect 53 human life at all . We all travel around London and we use public transport . We have a much fear as anyone else about 54 in something . But in the coming days , everyone is going to have to work together and keep calm . We will look out for each other and that’s how we will 55 this difficulty .

Many adults see teens as energetic. Many of us see ourselves as proud. This thinking 36 many adults and us, too, to have the idea that if we can’t handle school or 37 life well, we’re just not trying.
But in my opinion that may not be 38 .
Earlier this school year, I was leaving my class one Friday, when suddenly it 39 like I had pulled a muscle in my back. I knew I was ill.
After a few days I stopped eating. This meant I lost 40 ; the clothes that I bought two weeks earlier began 41 loose. This time my parents got scared. 42 , I started sleeping less. My eyelids(眼皮)were constantly 43 .
I refused to 44 that I was ill. I kept my job working 25 hours a week in a shop; I didn’t 45 any classes. When I was hurting, I didn’t mind and kept on going. 46 it kills you, it makes you stronger, right?
But now I find myself thinking. Is it 47 it? I’m taking the classes and writing for the newspaper because it looks good 48 college applications(申请表). And I’m working 25 hours a week so that, once I get into my dream school, I can 49 it.
Here I am, already sick from the 50 of work I’m doing in and out of school. So, what good is 51 application if I’m badly ill? What is the 52 of doing this work if I can’t enjoy the results?
In fact, by writing my 53 I’m telling all the people who 54 much about the future and worry about it now. This is my warning: Don’t climb the 55 dive if you don’t like the deep end.

Bird flu is becoming a new threat against human beings as well as birds. 36 , as the World Health Organisation (WHO) says, fears 37 worldwide that the bird flu virus could change into a more 38 form. At Shanghai's Pudong International Airport, all 39 leaving or entering must complete a(n) 40 declaration (申报) form that asks if travellers have had close 41 with birds or bird flu 42 over the past week.
They will also be screened with a special camera for high 43 , and must declare coughing or shortness of 44 . People with temperatures over 38 degrees will be further 45 .
At least 68 46 have died from bird flu since 2003. So far, most human cases of the disease are concerned in contact with 47 birds. But experts fear a human flu pandemic (传染病) will break out 48 the deadly bird flu virus changes into a 49 that spread easily between people.
China, which has more 50 than any other country, has called bird flu a "serious pandemic". It has reported 22 outbreaks among birds so far, and three confirmed human cases of bird flu. Two of them died and one was 51 .
The preventive 52 , announced in a notice on the Government's website, are similar to those required during the 2003 outbreak of SARS, which — 53 bird flu — spread easily from person to person.
The WHO points out that the main route (途径) of human infection by the bird flu virus is 54 contact with sick birds, and that transmission from person to person requires very close contact with a sick 55 .

In Twain, many people know what a “motorpool” means. It is 21 known as a place for the maintenance of official business and government cars. 22 it is a place for vehicle maintenance.
23 to visit my friend. My friend drove a car to 24 me at the airport, and took me to his home. Out of the 25 ,my friend drove his car into the innermost 26 , which had a sign“carpool only”. I 27 what“carpool”meant. I felt doubted whether he was going to a motorpool. 28 I thought myself clever in asking:
“Is there anything wrong with the car?”
“Nothing. 29 ?”said he.
“Well then, why are you going to carpool?”I 30 .
’t help 31 and told me that“carpool”refers to the lane that only the cars with two or more 32 can drive in. I felt rather embarrassed on 33 that.
’s neighbour came over to ask whether he 34 “carpool”the next day.“ 35 ,”my friend said“Iwil accompany my friend to go shopping tomorrow.”I was 36 again, wondering why he could not“carpool”with him since we had“carpooled” 37 .My friend explained to me again that the“carpool”that his neighbour 38 meant they in turn drove the car to work so as to save energy. The first“carpool”is a noun, 39 the second“carpool”is a verb. It is really 40 for newcomers in America to understand it in a short time.

Lose-Win is weak. It’s easy to get stepped on. It’s easy to be the nice guy. It’s easy to give in, all in the name of being a peacemaker.
36 in the world of Lose Win during her eighth grade year before she finally broke 37 of it:
38 with my mom all started one day 39 she said to me sarcastically(讽刺地),“Wow, you’re sure sassy(敢顶嘴的,时尚的)today.” I 40 it so literally(字面地)that then and there I decided to close myself off from her and never 41 back to her. So every time she would say something 42 I disagreed with her I would just say, “Okay, 43 you want, Mom.”
I really got cold quickly. And my 44 began to build. One night I talked to my mom about the school homework and she said, “Oh, that’s 45 ”and then went back to mop the floor.
“Don’t you ever 46 ?” I thought. But I didn’t say anything and stormed off. She 47 had no idea I was upset. She would have been willing to talk to me had I 48 her how important it was to me.
At last, I just blew up. “Mom, this has got to 49 . You tell me everything you want me to do and I just do it because it’s 50 than fighting. Well, I’m sick of it.” This all came as a 51 to her.
After my blowup, we felt like we were 52 all over in our relationship. But it’s getting better all the time. We discuss things now and I always 53 my feeling with her.
If you adopt Lose Win as your basic 54 toward life, then people will wipe their dirty feet on you. You’ll also be 55 your true feelings deep inside. And that’s not healthy.

What is in the drug that makes you sick or dead ? For example ,cocaine is harmful ,but what makes it harmful?
I can’t tell you all about drugs ,but I can 36 you think about them in this 37 way. Your body is a very complicated(复杂的) machine, 38 a lot of chemical machinery, all of which is finally turned 39 it all works together . Special chemicals, which we call drugs ,can affect it in many different ways.
Some drugs are 40 when your body has a problem, as with disease-causing bacteria. Then someone may give you aspirin to keep your temperature from going too 41 or some penicillin(青霉素) 42 it stops the growth of some kinds of bacteria. 43 ,all drugs are really poison, 44 if you take too much ,so you must always use them 45 .
Why do some people take drugs like cocaine ? For a little while they seem to make you feel better ,or happier .But 46 their effects have 47 ,your body has to pay an extra 48 to get back to normal. That makes you want to get 49 of the drug .
Drugs like cocaine have their special effects because they act as 50 for your nervous system. They cut off some of your nerve pathways and take away some of your senses and your 51 .They make you want always more . And just a little too much can even 52 nerves to your heart and stop its beating .
Many of us worry about the 53 around us and what pollution does to us .How about your internal(内在的) environment, and what goes on 54 you ? You control that all by yourself in what you put into your 55 . Most drugs are pollutants .You would not want pollutants in the air and water around you . Why would you want pollutants in your body ?
