Most dictionaries will tell you a number of things about a language. There are three important things. These three things are spelling, pronunciation and meanings.
First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a word. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical (按字母顺序的)order—a,b,c and so on. For example, on a dictionary page the word “poor”—p,o,o,r – comes before “poverty”—p,o,v,e,r,t,y—and the word “poverty” comes before “ power”—p,o,w,e,r. The words are always given in an alphabetical order.
The second thing, a dictionary will tell you pronunciation. Most give phonetic(语音),
or sound, alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you how a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.
The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meaning of words. You can look up a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will tell you all of the word’s meaning. For example, in English the common word “get” has over 20 different meanings.
( )51.In the passage, which of the following is among the three important things?
A. How to write a word well. B. How to use a word.
C. How to read a word correctly.
( )52.Of the three words: “remove”, “ remote” and “ remount”, _____ in a dictionary.
A. “remote” comes first and “remove” comes last.
B. “remove” comes first and “ remote” comes last.
C. “remote” comes first and “remount” comes last.
( )53.Many words have_______.
A. several meanings B. few meanings C. one meaning
( )54.A better dictionary can tell you _______.
A. more of the word’s pronunciation. B. More of the word’s meaning.
C. More of the word’s spelling.
( )55.Phonetic alphabets are used to show _______.

Halloween is a strange holiday. It started several centuries ago in Europe. It began as “Hallow Evening” meaning “holy night”. At that time November 1st was called “All Saints' Day” and people honoured all the saints who did not have their own special day. People believed that October 31st was the time when all the evil spirits were supposed to be active. So people would play all sorts of pranks (恶作剧)on each other.
Black is one of the traditional Halloween colons, probably because Halloween festivals and traditions took place at night. Pumpkins are a symbol of Halloween, so orange has become the other traditional Halloween- color. Making lanterns out of pumpkins is a Halloween custom
Halloween is great fun for children. They dress up as ghosts, witches(女巫), Small children go " Trick -or -Treating". They wear costumes, knock on doors, and shout, "Trick or Treat!" People almost always choose to give them candy as a treat, instead of choosing to receive a trick from the children. Adults sometimes "trick or treat" their friends, too. 第 三节 回答问题(5小题,计10分)
Saying no can be very difficult. People who are very shy often have little confidence. It is very hard for them to say no. They would feel shy when they say no, but doing things that they don’t want to do will make them unhappy.
A simple and direct “No” is the best way. If you want to explain, you can keep it simple. Just say, “No, I’ve already made plans for this time” or “No, I’m not free at that time.”
Other indirect but polite ways of saying no:
● Sorry, I can’t do this right now.
● I’m afraid I can’t, but thank you for asking.
● Please accept (接受) that I cannot come.
● I’d rather not.
To say no you should:
● Start the sentence with the word “No”.
● Shake (摇晃) your head when you say no to make sure others understand. Your voice should be clear and direct.
Sometimes it is difficult to say no. You can try to reply and explain in the following way:
“Sorry. I would have taken care of your cat next weekend, but I will be going out. I know it will be hard to find someone to take care of the cat. I will try to help you next time.” Remember that: you have the right (权利) to say no!
