① Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival, which is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth Chinese lunar month.

②There are many legends about origins of this festival, but it is widely accepted that it is held in memory of the patriotic poet Qu Yuan. ③Qu Yuan, a famous poet and patriot of the Warring States period, committed suicide by drowning himself in the river for his country. ④The local people, out of respect for him, rushed into their boats to search for him while throwing rice into the river to feed the fish so they would not eat Qu’s body. ⑤This later developed into the custom of holding dragon boat races and eating zongzi.

[时间] The Mid-autumn Festival, which is one of the most important traditional festivals in China, falls on August 15th of the Lunar calendar every year.[范围] Not only is it popular in China but it is also celebrated in many other Asian countries. 

[象征] People believe that the moon is a symbol of family reunion, luck and fortune, and it is a custom to express best wishes to the beloved ones at this particular time. [方式] On that day people usually go back home to have family reunion, enjoying a large meal with their family. They will also eat moon cakes, which are round cakes

with meat, eggs, nuts and other things inside.

最近, 我国教育专家对我国中学生所喜爱的节日进行了一项调查, 北京和广州的1000多名中学生接受了调查。调查结果如下： 

Recently some Chinese educational experts did a survey among more than 1000 students from Beijing and Guangzhou on their favorite festivals. The result shows that about half of the respondents choose the Spring Festival as their most favorite. 

Next comes Christmas Day and Mothers’ or Fathers’ Day, with 20% and 10% respectively. However, Mid-Autumn Day accounts for less than 10%.From the survey, we can see although over 80% of the students are familiar with our traditional festivals, like the Spring Festival, more and more young people favor some foreign festivals.

Recently there has been a heated discussion about how to keep healthy in our class. ①Most of us hold that health is of great importance, and we put forward the following suggestions to keep healthy.

The Ways to Keep Healthy

Everyone hopes to be in good health. But how? Here are some ways to keep healthy.

First, you need a healthy diet. It is better to eat fresh fruit and vegetables because they have a lot of fibre and vitamins. Don’t eat the food which contains too much sugar and fat, like butter, cheese, coffee and chocolate. Fat and sugar make people put on weight easily.

Second, good living habits are very important. You should do regular exercise to build up your body. Besides, enough rest is necessary for your health. You need 8 hours’ sleep a night and don’t work too hard. Smoking is a bad habit, so never smoke.

In a word, healthy food and good living habits are good ways to keep healthy.

On the evening of last Sunday, the health group of the Students’ Union did a survey

 among 3,000 students on dieting habits in the leacture hall. 

The survey shows that nearly one-fifth of the students go to school without breakfast and 

nearly half of them like to have snacks and street food. In addition, the survey points out

 that some boy students eat or drink too much at a time while some girl students go on a 

diet strickly to stay in shape. 

As for the reasons, those who have bad eating habits not only lack the knowledge of 

healthy dieting but also don’t realize the importance of health to their study. Therefore, it

 is suggested that we students should have various healthy diets and have meals regularly.

        Nowadays, some students cheating in exams has become a problem we have to face. Here are two main reasons for it. On the one hand, students often take exams at school, but sometimes they have too many exams which are too difficult. On the other hand, some of the students are lazy and don’t work hard at their lessons. So when taking examinations, they sometimes cheat in order to get better results to please their parents and teachers. 

        Then, how should we solve this problem? First, it is wrong to cheat in exams because it breaks the rules of schools. students should be honest and try to get good results by studying hard instead of cheating in examinations. What’s more, students should improve study methods and get well prepared for exams. Lastly and importantly, the exams should be well designed so that they will be suitable for students.

Recently, students in our class have had a discussion on whether space is worth exploring.

     30% of us think space exploration is not worthwhile. They think space is too far away from us and our daily life. And the money spent on space exploration can be used to solve the earth’s problems such as starvation and pollution. 

     On the other hand, 70% think space is worth exploring because we have benefited a lot from it, such as using satellites for communication and weather forecast. What’s more, with further space research, we may solve the population problem by moving to other planets one day. Also, space research will enable us to find new sources to solve the problem of energy shortages on the earth.

Unit5

Japan, an island country, is located to the east of China with an area of 377,800 square kilometers and a population of about 128,000,000. Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, is the symbol of Japan. Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the most populated cities in the world. Japan is well-known for cherry blossoms in spring. Every spring, hundreds of different kinds of cherry blossoms bloom in the country, which are so fascinating that they are really worth seeing.
