I have been hearing- impaired(听力弱的) all my life. By the time I was five years old, putting on hearing aids(助听器)in the morning was just as normal as brushing my teeth. However, I never believed that it should limit my success in any way.
During my 17 years , I met many people who don’t know about hearing disabilities and deal with this by stereotyping(对某人有成见) me. In primary school my head teacher told my parents I belonged to a school for the deaf. My classmates told me something was wrong with my brain. People speak louder than normal when they see my thick plastic hearing aids in my ears. From time to time I still hear the term ‘dumb deaf’( 聋哑)referring to people with a hearing disability.
However, my hearing disability made me a stronger person. Because I wear hearing aids, I have to prove that I am not physically or mentally(精神上) limited. I have to work harder and earn top grades in school to earn the respect of my teachers. In sports I’ve had to run faster, hit harder, catch better and score more points to prove I not physically challenged(被挑战).
In my struggle to prove I am equal to my non-disabled classmates, I have made myself better than the average teenager. I won the all-star award on my baseball team. I have made myself a writer through my published(出版发表的) articles.
Instead of giving in, I choose to prove that I can do anything I want. I truly believe I would not be the strong and ambitious(有雄心的)person I am today if I did not have a hearing disability.

Now and then we all get ill. Then we usually go to see a doctor. Doctors know a lot about what makes us ill. They may give us something to take. The medicine often makes us well again.
But sometimes the doctor’s medicine doesn’t work. A sick person does not get well. The pain, or hurt, will not go away. This happened to one man. He was in hospital, but he was not getting well. Then he found a new “doctor’’ inside himself. This “doctor” was his own sense of humor. He saw funny films. He read funny books. And something wonderful happened. Laughing took away his pain. Then he was able to sleep and rest. His own happy feeling helped him to feel well again. And he told his story in a book. He said laughing was his best “medicine’’. His doctor thought so, too.
Another man was ill, and he had a terrible pain in his back. Then doctors could not stop it from hurting. So the man began to “picture’’ his pain. In his head he “drew’’ a picture of a dog . H e imagined it as a real dog. And it was made friends with the dog. And his pain went away!

If you visit a Chinese family, you should knock at the door first. When the door opens, you will not move before the host says “Come in, please.” After you come into the room, you would not sit down until the host asks you to take a seat. When a cup of tea is put on a table before you or sent to your hand, you will say “Thank you” and receive it with two hands, not one hand, or they will think you are ill-mannered. Before entering a house in Japan, it is a good manner to take off your shoes. In European countries, even though shoes sometimes become very dirty, this is not done. 20 . Read the following passage and choose the right answers .
Have you ever heard an echo(回声) of your voice?
An echo is a reflected(反射) sound. Stand in a very large, empty hall, with nothing on the walls. Then shout. The sounds you make will hit the walls and come back to you. The walls reflect the sounds. These reflected sounds are called “echoes’’ .
We can use reflected sound to make sound travel farther. Hold a watch about fifty centimeters from your ear. You cannot hear it. The sound of the watch travels a short way in all directions. It does not travel as far as your ear. You can make it travel to your to ear by using a roll of cardboard.
Make the roll of cardboard about fifty centimeters long. Put one end over your ear and hold the watch at the other. Now you can hear the watch because the sound has not gone in all directions. It is reflected down the tube to your ear.
A megaphone(喇叭筒) works in the same way. It makes sound travel farther. It reflects the sound into a beam(一束) which can travel a long way. In the ship, the sailor uses the megaphone to make his voice travel. Without the megaphone, his voice cannot travel far.
We use reflected sound in many ways. We use it to measure the depth of the sea, for example. Among the animals, bats and whales use reflected sound to tell them where they are and what things ate near them.
