Every nation has its own folk festivals. The Spring Festival is the chief holiday in China while Christmas is the most important red letter day in the western world.
The Spring Festival and Christmas have much in common. Both are prepared beforehand to create a joyous atmosphere; both offer a family reunion with a square feast: and both satisfy the children with new clothes, lovely presents and delicious food. However, the Chinese Spring Festival has no religious background while Christmas has something to do with God and there is Santa Claus with white heard to bring children presents
Chinese Spring Festival has a long history, which is nearly four thousand years old. Initially, the festival had no name or fixed date However, people called Spring Festival "the age" according to the revolution period of Jupiter by B.C. 2100. Before B.C. 1000, people used "the year", which means "Great Harvest" representing the Spring Festival.
According to the traditional custom, the Spring Festival lasts from the 23rd day of 12th lunar month to the 15th day of 1st lunar month, and the climax should be the New Year Eve and the first day of first lunar month.
People carry out a lot of activities all over the country to welcome the Spring Festival. In the countryside, this kind of preparation starts from the beginning of 12th lunar month. All the families clean their houses, wash their clothes and bed sheets. Fresh new clothes and sheets

Christmas in western world is quite different from the Chinese Spring Festival. First, they are distinctly different in their origins. The festivals in western countries generally stem from religion and its relative events, so they are all influenced with religious features. Second, they are apparently different in their customs. Christmas, annual December 25, it is the Christian that commemorates the life that Jesus emerges, called Christmas Day. It is from December 24 to January 6 of next year. During Christmas, the Christians of various countries hold the grand memorial. Actually it was the Christian's festival on Christmas Day, because people extremely paid attention to, it becomes one festival for the entire people. It is the grandest festival in one year of western countries, which can equate with the New Year.
Christmas in our day is a collection of traditions and practices taken from many cultures and nations. It is a holiday that unifies almost all of professing Christendom. To many people, it is a favorite time of the year involving gift giving, parties and feasting. The spirit of Christmas causes people to enjoying themselves, realizing their dreams. When the sun goes down on December 24th, and darkness covers the land, Christmas begins in families and churches. As I not very specialized in western world, in this essay I only write something I have acknowledged about western Christmas customs.
It was noted by the pre-Christian Romans and other pagans that daylight began to increase after December 22nd, when they assumed that the sun god died. These ancients believed that the sun god rose from the dead three days later as the new-born and venerable sun. Thus, they figured that to be the reason for increasing daylight. In order to show their excitement of the new birth, they hold a great many of parties. And in their heart, God is always looking them and blessing them.
The Spring Festival and Christmas have much in common. Nowadays, some of the Chinese youth has begun to celebrate Christmas, following the example of the westerners. Perhaps they do so just for fun and out of curiosity. But this behavior, to some degree, has great contribution to the cross-cultural communication. Whatever means people utilize to celebrate their festival, they all hold the same purpose and wish that is being healthier, wealthier and happier.
