简说用作代动词的do

一．do 可以替代：

1）可替代谓语动词。

Oh,how I wanted to rest! … but if I did (= rested),I would freeze.

应注意的是，do 不能替代被动语态中出现的动词。

Their papers are kept as carefully as ours are kept. （不能改为are done ）

2）可替代动词词组，须受主语人称和数的，并有时态变化。

You may think it strange that anyone would live there. Actually a very small number of people do (= live there).

“Does John have any chance?”  “Yes, he does (= has a chance).”

“I’ll eat and drink less,too.perhaps it will cure me.” And of course ,it did (= cured him ).

二．do so 可以替代：

代动词do 可与so 搭配，替代“动+宾”，“动+状”一类的谓语结构。

“Now, breathe deeply, Charlie,” Charlie does so (=breathes deeply ).

do so 用来替代“动+宾”，“动+宾+宾补”等结构时，其中的so 可为it，that，this 所取代，do it 在口语中多用。

“Who broke this window ?”the policeman shouted .“I did it (=broke this window), Soapy said happily.

“You must let the king find out for himself why he is always ill.” “How can I do that (= let the king find out for himself why he is always ill?”

He must not always be translating everything into his own language. If he does this (= always translates everything into his own language), it shows he has not mastered it.

还要注意以下几点：

■do so 主要用于表达自愿的、故意的行为，象lose，like 等动词构成的谓语，一般不能用do so 代替，如：she lost her money. I was surprised that she did  ( 不能说did so ).

■do so 表达的是同一主语所做、前面已提到的同一动作。如果主语不同，则不用do so 代替，如：You look more like a monkey than I do.（不能说do so ）

■do so，do it，do that，do this 可采取非限定形式，有时它们替代的就是非限定动词。 

Mrs.Clarke wanted to scream,but she knew it would be wrong to do that (= to scream ).

Then it has no choice but to lie down and steep, to do that (= to lie down and sleep), it must find a place where it can keep fairly warm.

三．两种常用结构的区别：

1．So +do +主语  即倒装形式。不少情况下，为避免与上文重复，常用这种结构。代动词do 位于主语之前。so 意为in the same way，其主语与前一句主语不是同指一个人或事物。

I saw the film last week, so did she.

I like English, so does he.

Jim is a student, so are you.

2.  So +主语+do  这种结构常用来表示赞同或强调前一句所叙述的内容，并带有惊异的意味。代动词do位于主语之后，so 意为indeed 。要注意它的主语与前句主语相同，指的是同一个人（物或情况）。这一用法多用于对话中。

--- It’s very hot today.        --- Tomorrow will be Sunday.     --- It’s raining now. 

--- So it is.                    --- So it will.     --- So it is.

有时上述两种句型可以出现在同一个句子里。

You know Tom is a good student; so he is and so are you.

四．代动词do 与助动词do 的区别：

1. 代动词do 替代的是实义动词，有不同的形式。

The door was falling to pieces. The windows were doing (= falling to pieces), too.

2. 助动词do 只是个作用词，无词义，常用来构成疑问句，否定句，倒装句或加强语气等。

He does not work on Sundays.

But the family did manage to send him to a technical school.

Only then did I realize that I was wrong.
