How to study English effectively

I’d like to summarize my experience of learning and teaching English with 5 sentences, which are “ read as much as possible, listen as much as possible, recite as much as possible, exercise as much as possible and revise as much as possible”. They are very easy to say, but much harder to do. I’d like to give some more explanation. 

     Learning English is just like a factory. To get products, we first should have as much material as possible. To read, listen and recite is the way to get material for its products( speaking, writing and translation, and examination to you).

First, I’d like to talk about reading. Reading here refers not only to loud reading in the morning or some other time, but also silent reading when we do some exercise( close, reading comprehension, and correcting); not only reading our text books but also reading some other English material after class. Of course, these books should be easy and interesting enough for you to read. You can find some in book stores or you can borrow from your friends and classmates. You do not have to read all of them, and choose one or two you are interested in. Do it at least half a year, or more. This is just like a thin man who wants to get fat. He has to eat good foods for a long time before it works. If you keep doing it, I am sure it will be of help and your English will be improved as well. 

When you read, you are doomed to meet some new words. Is it necessary for you to refer to the dictionary? The answer is no. Try to guess it with the help of those you have read and you are going to read. If it does not work, just forget and ignore it and go on with the following.

To do this, maybe all of us will meet a big challenge that sometimes we find it hard to concentrate on what we are reading. We can not pay our attention to the material well for a little longer time. Some one are quite aware of this, even sometimes they are angry with themselves, but it is still a little difficult to control ourselves. Do not worry about that, and I think it is not strange. This is the same as the case when we learn to ride a bike. At first, we are nervous, but gradually we can do it as freely as we can. This example is to show that reading is a habit as well as a skill, which needs practice.

Another thing you are supposed to know is not to try to always look back where you can not understand well. If you always do this, your reading speed will slow down. Try to read as fast as you can, and it is better if you can make your eyes 2 or 3 words or phrases before your mind. To do this, you also need a little more practice.

Next, I talk about listening. As a English learner, listening is another very important way to put English into your brain. Fist, you listen to the materials in our text books. There are listening, reading, integrating skills and so on. You can buy the tapes in some bookstores. Listen to them again and again until you are very familiar with them, especially listening and reading part. Oh, I remember, now there are better ways to listen to English. Nowadays, most of you have MP3 and MP4. If you want to, you can download English. So, you can listen whenever and where you want to. It could not be better, because you can listen to English just as you listen to pop songs. How great it is. I have such materials in my computer. I am glad to download them for you if you like. However, to be honest with you, at first, you may find it difficult to follow and easily get bored. It is not strange either. It is like dancing, which also needs some practice. I suggest that at the very beginning, you can look at the materials while listening if you find it hard to follow. Keep doing this one after another until you can listen to them very clearly without looking at anything. I am sure you will feel great if you can understand some or all. The more you understand, the more you like it. Maybe finally, you will find it uncomfortable not to listen. Not until then you will find listening to English is as interesting as pop songs. So now you only need action. Action speaks louder than my words.

Of course, you can listen to something else. Yes, English songs also great. Try to learn and sing some or more English songs after class if you like. It is a relaxation as well as learning and one rock kills two birds. Another way to improve listening is to choose some English programs on TV. There are so many channels. You can choose one or two and insist on doing it. I am sure you can benefit a lot from this. Unfortunately, you now have no enough time, so you can do this during holidays. Oh, I nearly forget the Internet, which is the biggest resource of English study. If you have access to the Internet at home, you can almost find anything you need. Thanks to modern technology, it is really immediate and fast to get all you need. There are other wonderful English programs on radio as well, but now nearly no one especially the young do not like it, so I just want to mention it. But for me, for most of us, we once used the radio to receive BBC, VOA, and CRI. My favorite is CRI(China Radio International).

     Recite as much as possible. Yes, reading and listening I talked above is to get English intensively, and unconsciously. But reciting is to achieve this goal extensively. But what should we recite? There are so many English sentences and passages. Do not worry, and I have and will underlined 7-8 important and useful sentences in each unit. They are not so many and difficult but ones related to some important structures or points. Most of you can do this if you put your heart into it. There are more or less 50 units in all in Senior Middle School. So you can recite about 400 key sentences, which are of great value to your English.400 sentences are not enough for top students but they are OK for most of you. Of course, you can recite more. The more, the better. What I should stress is that repeat is quite important and necessary. Recite them again and again until you can speak as quickly and clearly as you can.

     Exercise as much as possible. As a student, the biggest task is to take exams, especially the last one, the National Collage Entrance Examination. To get a high score in English examination is by no means easy for most students. To be frank, it is a fact. But it does not mean that you can not achieve  this. We can. What should we do? Do exercises. Maybe you can say that you are doing exercises every day. But I am sorry to say that most of you are wasting time. There are some ideas I want to share with you. 

First, choose some good exercises to do. Recently, there are a variety of exercises for students, but not all of them are  good or suitable enough for you. There are so many printing errors because they are probable illegally printed; some are too difficult. Most of points we have not studied. But there are many exercises about them, which are far away from us. In a word, good exercises should stand close to what we are learning during a certain period of time and not too difficult and not too easy. We should exercise what we are learning, not we are  learning A but the exercises are about B. Personally, I believe the best exercises are those from the National Collage Entrance Examination papers. Usually, they are categorized in some certain terms, such as Tense, Model Verbs and Reading. Doing such exercises can help you master some certain knowledge in a shorter time. Please have a try.

Next, if you have good exercises about what you are studying now, you can begin do them. Of course, after you have a good understanding of what the exercises are about. The most important thing, I think, in doing exercises is to be attentive. It is bad to talk with others or speak some rubbish words or do anything nothing to do with your task. It is wise to make a mark you always use where you do not understand, and after you finish the all, you can turn to your teachers, classmates, notes books or textbooks until you know them completely.

In the end, revise as much as possible. As a matter of fact, this topic is closely related to the words above. It is better to make a plan and go back to the exercises you did before. This time, you are doing them with a mind research, and ask more whys until you understand them very well. If you can do this, when you meet them or the ones similar with them, the next time or the next next time, you can work out immediately. This is like a fact that focus on one problem and defeat them one after another.

There are too many things to do. Maybe you can say. Really, they are not so few indeed. Actually, no one can do all of these perfectly, especially at the same time, including me. Now, you time is so limited that you can never afford much time to do all of them. However, I think, if you can choose one or two of them and never stop, it is more than great. You are not forced to do, I suggest you choose some of them and have a try. Maybe, you will have better ways, as long as they match you.
