Nowadays more and more college students are taking interest in Western festivals, such as Halloween and Christmas. Every year when a popular Western festival is around the corner, you can feel the atmosphere of joy and fun everywhere on campus.
There are many factors accounting for this phenomenon. For one thing, with the rapid development of science and technology, the world has become much smaller and international communication has now been made more accessible and frequent. Thereby Western culture can find its way into China easily. And people like college students stand more chances to have a close contact with foreign cultures and festivals. For another, most Western festivals have been highly commercialized and appear to be very appealing. And some fancy young students just like to follow the fashion and start to celebrate them.
Positively, this will enhance the culture exchanges between the east and the west. But if it is not properly tackled, it might bring forth some negative effects, that is, when engaged in various celebrating activities of Western festivals all the year round, the Chinese students might forget their own cultural values.
In recent years, people all over the world are coming to know the impact of global warming. It affects not only the climate, but also people’s daily life.
There are numerous factors that cause global warming. The development of modern industry must be the biggest one. While factories are consuming large quantities of energy, they also produce great amount of industrial toxic wastes, which are believed to be the major contribution to the global warming. In addition, the numerous cars running in cities and on the country roads emit endless carbon dioxide, which is accelerating the green-house effects. Furthermore, with the improvement of living conditions, people start to consume more energy in their daily lives, thus intensifying the global warming.
Despite this severe situation of global warming, I believe there are still ways to solve the problem. In my opinion, there are at least two measures we can adopt. First, the government should come up with more effective and stricter laws to limit industrial toxic emissions and waste byproducts. Second, we, as individuals, should get into the habit of saving energy. With our joint efforts, we are sure to make a better solution to this problem in the near future.
