Passage Dictation 15

Directions: In this part, there are altogether 15 Passages. Each passage will be read FOUR times. During the first reading, which will be read at normal speed, listen and try to understand the meaning. For the second and third readings, the passage will be read sentence by sentence, or phrase by phrase, with intervals of 10 seconds. The last reading will be read at normal speed again and during this time you should check your ?work. Please write the whole passage in the corresponding space.

Dictation 1  Go Fly a Kite

  The sun is shining bright,/the sky is blue/and a gentle breeze is blowing. /This is the most favorable weather for you to fly kites. /Flying kites is a great activity/that children both in the urban and rural areas are keen to take part in. /And it is liked by the adults, too. /You can often see a whole family flying kites happily together/in parks and in some open fields. /Besides being fun, it's a natural gateway/for you to go into science and history about kites.

Dictation 2  Rules in the College Classroom

Most classrooms have rules. /Even college classrooms have rules. / Although they may be different from rules in high schools classrooms,/ they are still important. /Understanding the rules of the classroom will help you be a successful student. /What are your responsibilities as a student in a college classroom ?/First, you should be prepared for class. / Read your assignments and finish your homework before coming to class. /Next, you should be punctual and attend class regularly. /Finally, you should be courteous and considerate./Don't talk, chew gum, or eat in class. /Don't walk around or leave the class before asking the instructor.

Dictation 3  Etiquette in the Office

As a confirmed night owl, I used to stumble into the kitchen as a child/and fall into my chair at the breakfast table,/only to be reprimanded by my parents and sent out to enter again/because I didn't have the courtesy to greet them upon entering. /This is one lesson executives should have learned from their mothers. /The number one complaint about bosses by their secretaries is/that they are ignored until the boss gives them their first assignment. /It is rude not to greet people when you first enter an office,/whether you are the mail person or the CEO. /Make it a habit/and you will help make the workplace a more pleasant environment.  

Dictation 4  Shyness

  Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. / Shy people are anxious and self-conscious;/that is, they are excessively concerned with their own appearance and actions./Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds:/what kind of impression am I making?/Do they like me? Do I sound stupid ? /Am I wearing unattractive clothes?/ 

Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. /They need reassurance that they are doing "the right thing". /Shy people are very sensitive to criticism;/they feel it confirms their inferiority. /They also find it difficult to be pleased by commitment with a statement like this one:/" You're just saying that to make me feel good./I know it's not true. "/It is clear that, while self-awareness is a healthy quality,/overdoing it is harmful.

Dictation 5  Transplantation

 Modem techniques of medical transplantation-surgically removing a diseased or malfunctioning kidney, heart, or other organ ,/and replacing it with a healthy organ from a donor-/has brought new life and new hope to patients/who, just a few generations ago, would have died. /But the practice has also raised significant ethical questions./One such question centers on the cold reality of supply versus demand :/at any moment, there are upwards of 150,000 people in the world awaiting transplants./A scarcity of donor organs usually means a long wait/-during which some patients die. /A large supply of organs is available from the roughly 200,000 patients worldwide/who are declared brain-dead each year,/but the problem has been to secure consent/from family members and loved ones to remove organs for transplant.

Dictation 6  Christmas in the United States

 In the United States Christmas is the most popular holiday. /Since the last days of November,/American homes and stores have been decorated with Christmas trees and bright lights./Schools and churches have been presenting special holiday concerts. /People have been going to parties,/finding gifts and preparing special Christmas food./For large number of Americans,/Christmas is surrounded by more traditions than any other holiday./Yet, many of these traditions are not really very old ones in the United States./In fact, the nation's first settlers would have been very surprised to see how Americans celebrate Christmas today. / Some people say that Christmas is not religious enough,/and that the holiday has become such big business/that Americans forget it was created to honor the birth of Christ. /It is true that people spend a lot of money during the season./However, Americans also do many special things to help each other at Christmas time.

Dictation 7  Space Exploration

Space explorations have affected all mankind./Up to now, the practical benefits resulting from space research have included the development of new methods and skills, new processes, new services, new products,/and even new companies created to make use of what has been learned through space travel./Also among the benefits are better education, more efficient management, /higher quality of industrial products, and rapid economic growth. /People all over the world are now served/by improved weather predictions, better communication systems, and better understanding of the earth and its environment. /Everyone will benefit as observations from space make it possible to measure the earth's resources /and to observe whether or not they are being used properly. / Increasingly, the space program will help our world deal with the problems of the environment.

Dictation 8  Preparation for Interview

When preparing for your interview, pay attention to the following five stages of the interview process:/first, preparation-learn as much about the company as you can before your interview. /Find out what they do, what they make, what kind of services they provide/and determine if your skills can fit with what they do. /Determine what you can offer the company. /Arrange and confirm the time for your interview. /Make sure you arrive early. /Don't be late. /Ask for directions when you confirm your appointment, if needed./Make a list of what questions you may want to ask them. /More importantly, make a list of those questions you anticipate they might ask you/and decide how you will answer these questions. /You then are prepared how to answer them.

Dictation 9  Imagination

We often need to distinguish between fact and fiction. /We use facts in making practical decisions./We also use language for the pleasure we can get out of it./Thus we have literature: plays, novels, stories and legends./We sometimes refer to these forms as fiction,/because the characters never really lived and the stories never really happened. / Imagination plays a big part in both practical use of language and the artistic use of language./The scientist, whom we consider a practical man, is extremely imaginative too./Can anything be more imaginative than the scientist's conception of matter?/Through his use of imagination, the scientist working in his laboratory/may discover new ways of aiding mankind and making life more pleasant. 

Dictation 10 An Auction

  An auction is usually advertised beforehand/with full details of the articles to be sold/and where and when they can be viewed by prosperous buyer. /If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed,/and each group of goods to be sold together, called a "lot" , is usually given a number. /The auctioneer doesn't begin with Lot 1 and continue in numerical order;/he may wait until he registers the fact that certain dealers are in the room/and then produce the lots they are likely to be interested in. /The auctioneer's services are paid for/in the form of a percentage of the price the goods are sold for. /The auctioneer therefore has a direct interest in pushing up the bidding as high as possible.

Dictation 11 Fashion

  The modem woman selects clothes according to her own taste. /She is able to choose what she likes from the many collections. /Today the customer, along with the designer, makes trends in fashion./The basic element of good fashion is good grooming. /The most stylish clothes will not look good on a woman/who does not have good posture and a graceful carriage. /Another element of good fashion is individuality. /The clothes of a well-dressed woman always reflect her own personality. /To be fashionable, a person must know what silhouettes and fabrics will highlight her figure/and what colors are flattering to her. /For instance, short women often choose clothes that make them seem taller,/while tall women draw attention away from their height. 

Dictation 12 Insurance and Health Schemes in Britain

  Every British citizen who is employed or self-employed/is obliged to pay a weekly contribution to the national insurance and health schemes. / An employer also makes a contribution for each of his employees,/and the Government too pays a certain amount. /This plan was brought into being in 1948. /Its aim is to prevent anyone from going without medical service, if he needs them,/however poor he may be;/to ensure that a person who is out of work/ shall receive a weekly sum of money to subsist on;/and to provide a small pension for those who reached the age of retirement. / Everyone can register with a doctor of his choice/and if he is ill he can consult the doctor/without having to pay for the doctor's services,/ although he has to pay a small charge for medicines. /The doctor may, if necessary, send a patient to a specialist, or to a hospital;/in both cases treatment will be given without any fee being payable.

Dictation 13 The Beauty of Britain

  The beauty of our country-or at least all its south of North Scotland-/is as hard to define as it is easy to enjoy. /Remembering other and larger countries, we see at once that one of its charms is that it is immensely varied within a small range. /We have here no vast mountain ranges, no boundless plains, no miles of forests/and are deprived of the grandeur that may accompany these things. /But we have superb variety. / A great deal of everything is packed into little space. /I suspect that we are always faintly conscious of the fact/that this is a smallish island, with the sea always round the comer. /We know that everything has to be neatly packed into a small space. /Nature, we feel, has carefully adjusted things-mountains, plains, rivers, lakes-/to the scale of the island itself. /A mountain 12,000 feet high would be a horrible monster here,/ as wrong as a plain 400 miles long, a river as broad as the Mississippi.

Dictation 14 Schedules

  Have you ever forgotten an appointment at the doctor's /or been late in getting to your part-time job?/Occasionally, these difficulties happen to everybody. /However, you can avoid such problems /if you write out schedules. /They will help you to find out how much time you have to do the things/that are important as well as those that are fun. / A master schedule can be used to find out/how much time you really have for activities. /This schedule lists all of the activities that you must complete. /A weekly schedule can also be used to help you plan time/for the things that you really like to do. /Your weekly schedule should include time for fun or recreational activities. /It also should include activities that will help you to achieve lifetime, long-term, and short-term goals. /Finally, it should include your study time and free time. /Free time is necessary so that you can make needed changes in your schedule. /A daily schedule is a final suggestion to help you plan your time.

Dictation 15 How to Behave in the Working World

  When young people get their real jobs, they may face a lot of new, confusing situations. /They may find that everything is different from the way things were at school. /It is possible that they will feel uncomfortable in both professional and social situations. /Eventually, they realize that university classes can't be the only preparation/for all of the different situations that appear in the working world. /

 Perhaps the best way to learn how to behave in the working world /is to identify a worker you admire and observe his behavior. /In doing so, you'll be able to see what it is that you admire in this person. /For example, you will observe how he acts in trouble./ Perhaps even more important, you will be able to see what is his approach to everyday situations. / While you are observing your colleague,/you should be asking yourself whether his behavior is like yours/and how you can learn from his response to a different situation. /By watching and learning from a model,/you will probably begin to identify and get good working habits.
