If you ask me for my biggest impression of what America’s like over the last three years, I’d say it is how rich and diverse the student life is. For example, at Princeton, we have more than 100 student organiza- tions planning all kinds of campus activities — from sports, band dancing to juggling and acting to transla- tion, design, publishing, volunteering and camping. You name it.
During my freshman year, I tried a lot of activities, from dancing to design to newspapers. Then I found my passion in the environment and volunteerism. I joined Greening Princeton and Student Volunteer Council. A year later, I’d become the publicity chair and project coordinator(协调员)of these two clubs.
Student activities give us a chance to do things we care about and are good at. If we have a good idea, we can propose it at a meeting, find interested people to form a team, and then apply for funding from the school. We have full control of the project and the ability to make our ideas happen. For example, I came up with the idea of Dining and was supported by my club Greening Princeton. I wrote a proposal, presented it in front of the college master, and communicated with the head of Dining Services. After a few follow-ups, this project was carried out.
One other benefit of extra curricular(课外的)activities is the friendship that comes with them. Once you become part of a group, it is much easier to adjust to college life. You realize you are not alone. This will most likely increase your study efficiency and in turn help your academics. My headmaster once told me, “Stand on your tiptoes.” In that way, we not only have a better view of life, but will also put out our comfort zone. Getting involved in extra curricular activities has given me the opportunity to stand on my tiptoes.
Make yourself try new things and stick to the things that matter to you. This is one piece of advice I have. Remember, college is a color palette. You are the artist who can add your own colors.
60. The author mentions one hundred student organizations to show ________.
A. student activities are colorful there B. students are free to learn their major
C. each organization belongs to a college D. students have to join in one of them
61. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Students can do what they care about and are good at in class.
B. Taking part in the activities after class has three advantages.
C. Each of the students has to take part in more than two items.
D. Students can balance their college life with these activities.
62. The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. show off the author B. introduce college life
C. say something interesting D. advertise the school
C
When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it like it’s the most precious thing in the world. Because in some ways, it is.
Most of us feel bad when we make mistakes, beat ourselves up about it, feel like failures, get mad at ourselves.
And that’s only natural: most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad, that we should try to avoid mistakes. We’ve been scolded when we make mistakes — at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.
Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow. If you think about it that way, mistakes should be cherished and celebrated for being one of the most amazing things in the world: they make learning possible; they make growth and improvement possible.
By trial and error — trying things, making mistakes, and learning from those mistakes — we have figured out how to make electric light, to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, to fly.
Mistakes make walking possible for the smallest toddler, make speech possible, make works of genius possible.
Think about how we learn: we don’t just consume information about something and instantly know it or know how to do it. You don’t just read about painting, or writing, or computer programming, or baking, or playing the piano, and know how to do them right away. Instead, you get information about something, from reading or from another person or from observing, then you make mistakes and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until you’ve pretty much learned how to do something. That’s how we learn as babies and toddlers, and how we learn as adults. Mistakes are how we learn to do something new — because if you succeed at something, it’s probably something you already knew how to do. You haven’t really grown much from that success — at most it’s the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey was made up of mistakes, if it’s a good journey.
So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes. They are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible.
63. Why do most of us feel bad about making mistakes?
A. Because mistakes make us suffer a lot.
B. Because it’s a natural part in our life.
C. Because we’ve been taught so from a young age.
D. Because mistakes have ruined many people’s careers.
. According to the passage, what is the right attitude to mistakes?
A. We should try to avoid making mistakes.
B. We should treat mistakes as good chances to learn.
C. We should owe great inventions mainly to mistakes.
D. We should make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.
65. The underlined word “toddler” in Paragraph 6 probably means ________.
A. a school teenager learning to write B. a kindergarten child learning to draw
C. a primary pupil learning to read D. a small child learning to walk
66. We can learn from the passage that ________.
A. growing and improving are based on mistakes
B. most of us can really grow from success
C. we learn to make mistakes by trial and error
D. we read about something and know how to do it right away
D
Wal-Mart is not just the world's largest retailer(零售商). It's the world's largest company, which sells in three months what number-two retailer Home Depot sells in a year.
Wal-Mart exercises its power for just one purpose: to bring the lowest possible prices to its customers. At Wal-Mart, that goal is never reached. The retailer has a clear policy for suppliers: On basic products that don't change, the price Wal-Mart will pay, and will charge shoppers, must drop year after year. But what almost no one outside the world of Wal-Mart and none of its 21,000 suppliers know is the high cost of those low prices. To survive in the face of its pricing demands, makers of everything from bikes to jeans have had to close US plants in favor of obtaining products from abroad.
Indeed, the real story of Wal-Mart, the story that never gets told, is the story of the pressure the biggest retailer constantly applies to its suppliers in the name of bringing us “every day low prices”.
The giant retailer's low prices often come with a high cost. Wal-Mart's pressure can crush the companies it does business with and force them to send jobs overseas. Are we shopping our way straight to the unemployment line? Of course, US companies have been moving jobs offshore for decades, long before Wal-Mart was a retailing power. But there is no question that the chain is helping accelerate the loss of American jobs to low-wage countries such as Thailand.
People ask, “How can it be bad for things to come into the US cheaply?” Sure, it's great to have bargains. But you can't buy anything if you're not employed.
There is no question that Wal-Mart's drive to squeeze out cost has benefited consumers. By now, it is accepted wisdom that Wal-Mart makes the companies it does business with more efficient and focused. Wal-Mart itself is known for continuous improvement in its ability to handle, move, and track goods. It is legendary(传奇)for forcing its suppliers to redesign everything from their packaging to their computer systems. It is also legendary for quite straightforwardly telling them what it will pay for their goods.
67. How do suppliers meet the requirements of Wal-Mart?
A. To sell even more goods in three months. B. To cut down the employment rate sharply.
C. To charge shoppers at a much higher price. D. To run the business in a well-organized way.
68. Wal-Mart's low price policy results in ________.
A. more high-paying jobs B. more jobless American workers
C. bigger profit of its partners D. better designed packages
69. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Wal-Mart is a very demanding company. B. Still more quality goods will be provided.
C. The value of Mal-Mart is over assessed. D. The food you get at Wal-Mart costs least.
70. What's the best title for the passage?
A. The Fortune Wal-Mart Makes B. The Biggest Retailer — Wal-Mart
C. The Wal-Mart you don't Know D. The Money Saving Tip in Wal-Mart

第五部分 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的词。
注意:每空只填1个单词。
Host family accommodation means that hosts treat the student as a full member of the household, eating together with the student and sharing the common living areas with him / her. No more than three adult students or four junior students will be accommodated in host family accommodation at one time.
Host family accommodation remains popular among international students. It is the most economical and beneficial accommodation for any student. It is also the best way to practice English and learn new cultures. As a result, it is often seen as the number-one choice for its advantages in language study, cultural communication and cost of living. Staying alongside host family enables students to get enough practice during the short time of their study so that their language acquisition is likely to become faster. Living in host families, students are able to spend a lot of time communicating with their “host parents”, who are often very hospitable and friendly, and get to know the local way of life, people and culture. Most host families are always ready to help students out in any situation. Often the bonds that are made between international students and their host families endure many years, and are maintained through letters and e-mails. Another advantage is that host family accommodation can sometimes be the least expensive. It attracts students as it ensures them a family type of living at a low cost.
The advantages, however, have not prevented host families from worrying. On the one hand, some host families are losing their unique selling point. One problem is that the majority of hosts in big cities, now generally single and young, have less time available for international students, but the selling point for host family accommodation is communication practice. On the other hand, students' expectations have risen. They are becoming more demanding and asking for more than ever from their accommodation, as they come mainly from high socio-economic groups in their own countries.
To get out of the difficult situation, host families are now making efforts to improve the quality of service. They are trying to make living conditions better, including broadband Internet service, private bathroom, and access to plenty of hot water for long showers. They are also providing students with structured family activities.
It is believed that host family accommodation will keep popular with international students.

Should We Help Strangers?
We used to appreciate those who like to help strangers. But nowadays people tend to be very cautious of helping strangers. Recently our class had a discussion about whether we should help strangers. Opinions are divided on this topic.
Some think we should try to help others whether they are strangers or not. Helping others is a virtue, and it will make our society more harmonious. Besides, to some extent, helping others is helping oneself. We may come across some trouble and need others' help some day. If everyone turns a blind eye to our trouble and turns a deaf ear to our appeal for aid just because we are strangers to them, it’s hard to imagine what our world will be like.
However, others are afraid that helping others can sometimes bring us trouble or even put us in danger. Sometimes we are just misunderstood and thus have to pay the cost of kindness.
In my opinion, we should try our best to help others when they are in need of help, but we should also protect ourselves to avoid getting into trouble. Only if everyone tries a little kindness, will society be full of love and trust be established between people.

Text 1
M: How about the novel you’ve just finished reading?
W: It takes your attention the moment you start reading it.
M: Really? Could you lend it to me this Sunday?
W: No problem.
Text 2
M: Why don’t you and Elle join us for dinner tonight? The five of us haven’t gone out together for a long time.
W: Ella says it is always too noisy to enjoy the meal at MacDonald.
M: Shall we go somewhere quiet?
Text 3
M: It is extremely cold today, isn’t it?
W: Yes, the weather forecast says it will snow heavily again tonight.
M: Aren’t you glad that we will get away from this for a week?
W: Surely I am. But let’s call tomorrow morning before we leave for the airport to make sure our flight hasn’t been delayed or cancelled.
Text 4
M: Our meeting may last longer than planned. Would you call my wife and tell her I won’t have supper at home?
W: Yes, sir. If anyone calls while you are out, I’ll take the message.
M: That’s OK. Thank you.
Text 5
W: I heard you are moving to London.
M: Yes, I’ve got an offer from a big company there.
W: Oh, that is great! But I am going to miss you.
M: Me too. Let’s keep in touch.
Text 6
W: Hey, Eason. I didn’t know you rode a bike to work.
M: Yeah, it helps to keep me fit and it is environmentally friendly, too.
W: One less car on the road means less pollution.
M: Right. Since my office is near a park, it is a really nice ride, too.
W: How far is it?
M: About 5 miles. It takes me about half an hour.
W: Oh, I wish I could do it too, but I work in the city. So I take the train.
M: You are doing your part for the environment by taking public transportation.
W: True.
Text 7
W: Dr. Richard, when did you have the idea of helping cancer patients?
M: Actually, I didn't have any idea when I left high school at the age of 18. Then I found a job in a small medical lab. I never dreamed I would help save people’s lives.
W: Then what caused your change?
M: I love lab work, so I went back to school. After ten years, I got my PhD. Then I worked at a medical company, where I began the research on a medicine to treat lung cancer patients. Now I have been here for 8 years. For me, a drug saves more than life. It can save a family.
W: I couldn’t agree more with you.
Text 8
M: Why are you so angry with Jim?
W: You know we bought a computer about two weeks ago?
M: And Jim likes it ever so much.
W: Well, that is the problem. Whenever he comes back he will run to the computer and play the games for hours. What’s more, he often stays up late. He is not spending enough time in his school work.
M: That is too bad.
W: Just now I received his head teacher’s phone call, telling me that he failed in the exam.
M: My God! You should do something about it!
W: Yeah. I told him not to use the computer during the weekdays.
M: Is he going to follow your advice?
W: You know kids; whatever their parents say just goes in one ear and out the other. So I wonder if you could talk to him. You are his favorite cousin, and your advice may work.
Text 9
M: Give me all your cash, old woman.
W: What is it? Ah, I’m being robbed again! Please get the gun out of my face. I’ll do what you want.
M: What I want now is for you to shut up and give me all of your cash.
W: Oh, here it is-all of the money from the cash register.
M: That is too little. Now give me your wallet.
W: All right, here you are.
M: Good. Now, give me a bottle of Scotch from up there on the shelf.
W: I am sorry, young man. You can shoot me if you like. But I can’t give you that bottle unless you are 21.
M: All right. Here is my driver’s license. Do you see there? I am over 21.
M: Yes, you are over 21. I also see that your name is Jamison Kelleher and you live on Main Street. The police will be very interested in that information. Aren’t you sorry now that you tried to rob me?
Text 10
From Monday to Friday most people are busy working or studying, but in the evenings and on weekends they are free to relax and enjoy themselves. Some watch TV or go to the movies. Others take part in sports. There are many different ways to spend their free time.
Almost everyone has some kind of hobbies. It may be anything from collecting stamps to making model airplanes. Some hobbies are very expensive, but others don’t cost anything at all. Some collections are worth a lot of money. Others are valuable only to the owners.
I know a man who has a coin collection worth $250. He is very happy about his purchase and thinks the price is reasonable. On the other hand, my youngest brother collects matchboxes. He has almost 600 of them, but I doubt if they are worth any money. However, to my brother they are extremely valuable. Nothing makes him happier than to find a new matchbox for his collection.
That is what a hobby means, I guess. It is something we like to do in our spare time simply for fun. The value in dollars is not important. We do it for the pleasure it gives us.
