Most young boys don’t like growing flowers and watering them. But for 16-year-old Angus, working in the garden isn’t just a hobby—it has changed his life.
Angus has a special illness and his IQ is lower than a normal boy. Six months ago, he started learning how to grow flowers. Now, he spends hours in the garden growing flowers, watering and looking after them. “Before working in the garden, it was difficult for Angus to concentrate in class and sometimes he didn’t want to go to school,” says his mother Kim. “Now he can’t wait to go to school and he is happy every day. Angus is able to work in a garden center in the future.”
Research shows that working in the garden improves mental and physical health. In the past, soldiers in Egypt treated their mental health problems after war by working in the garden. Even now, some doctors advise people to work in the garden to treat their mental health problems.
And doctors also advise young people like Angus to work in the garden.
The lives of hundreds of children in Britain with special needs, like Angus, have been changed by working in the garden. When working in the garden, children have an opportunity to learn a lot of important skills, such as learning how to work with other people and learning how to take care of living things. Besides, the children become more confident after working in the garden.

Mr Green went to work early in the morning and got home late at night. He knew that he had to do so because his wife had no job and his children were still young. However, Mrs Green did not know how to save money. She often bought things that the family did not need. She was also very lazy. She didn’t do much housework at home though she had plenty of free time during the day.
One day, Mrs Green went to a pet shop and looked at a parrot. She asked the shop owner “Is it smart?”
“Yes. It is so smart that he can speak six languages!”
Mrs Green then paid for it and brought it home. At night she was chatting with a friend on the phone when her husband arrived home. Mr Green, who was hungry, didn’t find any food to eat in the house and when he saw the bird, he realized that his wife had spent money on a wasteful thing. He became very angry. He quickly caught the bird and killed it with a knife.
She screamed, “You are eating a bird that could speak six languages!”
Mr Green replied, “If it could speak six languages, why didn’t it call for help while I was killing it?”
