Secondhand smoke clearly kills people and the only way to control it is to ban smoking in all workplaces, US Surgeon-General Dr Richard Carmona said.

The old shopkeeper led me through to the back of the shop. The room was filled with boxes and photographs of people dressed in old-fashioned clothes, holding packages in their hands.

“Who are these people?” I asked.

“Please do not do that, sir”, said Mr. Hopkins. “This is a special place for special people. You must keep this shop a secret.” Then he took my photograph, and handed me the picture straight away.

“That was quick!” I exclaimed. I looked at the photograph. In the picture I looked proud and excited holding the presents I had bought in Mr. Hopkins’ dusty shop.

On Christmas Day, my friend and relatives were delighted with the presents I had bought for them. For weeks, my brother begged me to show him where to find this wonderful little shop. I finally agreed to take him to London to show him.

When we arrived in London, we walked along Oxford Street, past the department store and found…nothing. The little shop was no longer there. In its place was an empty space being used as a car park. I checked the area, again. There was the music shop, and there was the department store. In between should have been Hopkins and Son, but it wasn’t there.

As I was staring at the place where the shop should have been, an old policeman came along. “Are you looking for something sir?” he asked.

I turned and said “I am looking for a little shop called Hopkins and Son. I thought it was here.”

“Oh yes,” said the policeman. “There was a shop here once called Hopkins and Son. It sold all sorts of things, but it was knocked down over 30 years ago.”

I looked again at the place where the shop had been. Then I reached into my pocket and took out the photograph that Mr. Hopkins had taken of me holding my presents in the little shop.

Among various programs, TV talk shows have covered every inch of space on daytime television. And anyone who watches them regularly knows that each one is different in style. But no two shows are more opposite in content, while at the same time standing out above the rest, than the Jerry Springer and Oprah Winfrey shows.

Jerry Springer could easily be considered the king of "rubbish talk". The topics on his show are as surprising as can be. For example, the show takes the ever-common talk show titles of love, sex, cheating, and hate, to a different level. Clearly, the Jerry Springer show is about the dark side of society, yet people are willing to eat up the troubles of other people's lives.

Like Jerry Springer, Oprah Winfrey takes the TV talk show to its top. But Oprah goes in the opposite direction. The show is mainly about the improvement of society and different quality of life. Contents are from teaching your children lessons, managing your work week, to getting to know your neighbors.

Compared to Oprah, the Jerry Springer show looks like poisonous waste being poured into society. Jerry ends every show with a "final word". He makes a small speech about the entire idea of the show. Hopefully, this is the part where most people will learn something very valuable.

Clean as it is, the Oprah show is not for everyone. The show's main audience are middle-class Americans. Most of the people have the time, money and ability to deal with life's tough problems. Jerry Springer, on the other hand, has more of a connection with the young adults of society. These are 18-to 21-year-olds whose main troubles in life include love, relationship, sex, money and drug. They are the ones who see some value and lessons to be learned through the show's exploitation.

Though nearly all novelists report what at least some of the characters in their works are thinking about, few writers attempt to recreate all of the thoughts and half thoughts that race constantly through any individual’s mind. Those writers who do rely on a technique called stream of consciousness. 

Consider for a moment what goes on in your own mind at any given moment. You may be consciously thinking, for example, of what you are reading on this page. Below this conscious level, however, hundreds of other impressions might be floating about --- a concert you attended last night, a sudden noise outside, a sight in the room as you glance up that makes you think of something related. Most of these images or ideas are half-formed and fleeting, and usually you are barely aware of them. Yet a writer using stream of consciousness attempts to put this jumble of concepts onto the printed page.

Many novels include short snatches of stream of consciousness, usually characterized by long or half-formed sentences and free association from one idea to the next. Few writers attempt to sustain the technique for long stretches, though there are some notable exceptions. James Joyce uses the technique extensively throughout his novel Ulysses, the story of one character’s experiences --- and reflections --- as he wanders through Dublin on a single day. William Faulkner uses it in The Sound and the Fury to probe the thoughts of three characters, including one of limited mental ability. Virginia Woolf uses it in The Waves, as she allows the reader to inhabit the minds of six friends as they pass through the stages of their lives. These works are some of the most challenging yet critically acclaimed novels of the 20th century.

    Jade(玉，翡翠) means a lot in Chinese culture and is highly valued by the Chinese people. Many people begin to wear one when they are young till they die, believing that it will bring them good luck.

    Every time I stop to think about which possession of mine means the most to me, I find myself looking at my left wrist, around which is a simple jade bracelet(玉手镯). And this bracelet will always remind me of my culture and the individual that I am.

    I remember very clearly the night my parents gave me the bracelet. It was in my sophomore (二年级) year of high school, and I had stayed out at midnight. When I finally got home, my parents gave me a lecture on responsibility. I expected to be placed on restriction, but instead they gave me a jade bracelet. I was totally shocked...but when I went to bed that night I was supremely happy.

    The next morning my father told me that because they had gone shopping for the bracelet, he had not gone to the racetrack(赛马场), and had missed out on winning $20,000 because of me. However, he said that I was worth it.

    The bracelet will always remind me of those two days and the love that exists in my relationship with my parents, even though nothing is ever said. I know that no matter what I may do, my parents will always love me and accept me the way I am. 

    Since I got the bracelet, I have not taken it off--- mostly because I don't want to. My bracelet means so much to me that if it should ever break, I would be enormously upset, but then. I could always save the pieces for good luck.

    We have had a class meeting today on whether we should give money to beggars and different people have different opinions.

    Some believe that we should give money to those who are in bad need of our help. Among these beggars are the elderly, drop-outs and the disabled, who can hardly make a living due to old age, poverty or physical inability. Many more students, however, think we shouldn’t give them money because most of the beggars are begging in hope of earning some easy money. Besides, to give money would encourage them to be lazy even if they have the ability to work.

    In general, we should help the people of the inferior group, but we should remain sensible when giving them money.

    The girl was astonished to receive a jade bracelet from her parents instead of being scolded for her fault. She has valued it very much because it always reminds her of the love existing between her and her parents.

    As the passage states, love plays a significant role in our life, especially the love between parents and children. Love from parents enables the child to gain more confidence to cope with difficulties, to realize his responsibilities and to become independent.

    This passage also reminds me of a similar experience. There was a time when I was under great pressure from study and from relationship between my friends and me. My personality changed. I withdrew from people, becoming unusually reserved and anxious. My parents, of course, were very concerned, but they spared no effort to comfort me and give me guidance. They took me on a holiday, discussed the problems that I was faced with, told me the stories of their youth and the same problems as they had come across. Eventually their efforts paid off and I went through the hard time. It is my parents' deep love that has made me what I am.

    Love from parents is like sunshine, making us warm and united. Appreciate your parents' love and you will find more strength in your life.
