   Modern mobile communication is based on spread spectrum technology that millions of people use every day. Frequency hopping technology is a branch of spread spectrum technology that is the key element in WiFi, cellphone, GPS system, communication on the internet and anti-jamming devices used in military. Hedy Lamarr, the inventor of frequency hopping technology was also a famous Hollywood actress in mid-20th century. She was known as her beauty at that time. People regarded her as international beauty icon. Her invention, frequency hopping technology, paved the way for the development of spread spectrum that is the basement of modern mobile communication. Frequency hopping technology is still the subject of research. 

   It’s hard to connect stunning actress to serious scientist. Hedy Lamarr was beautiful and smart. Her life is far more interesting than her movies. Lamarr was born in Vienna, Austria on November 9, 1913. She was the daughter of a rich banker who was from a Jewish family in Austria. After Hedy was born, her mother gave up her pianist career to take good care of Hedy and decided not to have any more children. It can be said that Hedy Lamarr was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Hedy Lamarr’s parents had put her education in the priority. She took ballet, piano and European language lessons with private tutors since the age of four years old. In her formal education, she learned basic concepts of signal technology. She quit school at the age of 16 for chasing her dream of becoming a movie star. However, Hedy Lamarr’s most remarkable achievement was not as an actress but a scientist. 

   Her first husband was an arms merchant, selling weapons to Nazi. Her husband always brought her to his business meetings where her husband talked about developing detective devices, radio signal and weapons with his clients. Hedy listened their conversations carefully and her brain was always in high gear. Hedy’s first marriage was a totally nightmare because her husband was a controlling person. She was unhappy in her first marriage. One day, she escaped on a train to London to have a new life. As a result of having been the wife of arms merchant, she knows that missiles aimed at the enemy could be prevented from reaching their targets by jamming the signals. At that time, Hedy Lamarr’s only goal was to stop Nazi. In 1941, with the help of musician George Antheil, Hedy designed a new kind of secret communication system inspired by piano which was the early form of frequency hopping. She used a modified piano roll in both the torpedo and the transmitter to change between 88 frequencies ( a normal piano has 88 keys). A constantly changing frequency cannot be jammed by enemy. It was a way to make wireless communication more secure. Hedy Lamarr offered her patented device to the U.S. Military for free. Unfortunately, the military establishment did not take her invention seriously. This technology was far ahead of its time. The significance of their invention was not realized until decades later.

After her patent had expired in 1960, the U.S. Army secretly put her technology into testing and production. Thus, Hedy Lamarr was never paid a dime on her technology. In 1997, Hedy Lamarr was given the Electronic Frontier Foundation Award for her brilliant work in wireless technology and she became the first woman to receive the BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award in 1998.

Hedy Lamarr was not only beautiful but intelligent. She used  knowledge she gained into practice. Although she had many difficulties in her life, she stayed away from fascinating Hollywood parties to absorb in the experiments. If her frequency hopping technology had been used during the World War, the war might have ended earlier.
