Dear Editor,
The 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing in 2008. Recently our class have had a discussion about its effects on Beijing.
Some students believe there are many good effects. They think the Olympics will encourage people in Beijing to learn English harder, help more people find jobs, prosper tourism and make Beijing more beautiful. Besides it will make China better known to the world. The others think the Olympics will also bring some trouble. For example, at that time, the traffic will be heavier and the environment will be destroyed. Furthermore, holding the Olympic Games will also cause more pollution and waste resources.
As a saying goes, a coin has two sides. So I think the Olympics have both good and bad effects. And it is certain that our government will do something to avoid the bad. What is more, our competitors will do better in the 2008 Olympic Games.
Yours truly,
Li Hua

W: We are running out of time. It’s 7 o’clock..
M: Don’t worry. The film will start in 15 minutes.
W: OK, let’s take a taxi to the cinema.
Text2:
M: Don’t take it too seriously. Why don’t you talk with Pam, the Director. She is really nice.
W: Maybe you are right.
M: Don’t forget the English saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” To have a good rest is good for you.
Text3:
W: You study really hard. You are in the library most of the time, even weekends and holidays. You need to relax more.
M: You mean I should enjoy myself?
W: Not only that. Visiting scenic spots and historical sites will bring you a lot of fun. Besides, you should meet more people and make more friends.
Text4:
M: You didn’t want to go to the mountains this summer, did you?
W: But I can’t stand the heat here.
Text 5:
W: Seeing the doctor at home, doing shopping at home, oh, we can do so many things at home.
M: Certainly we can. We’ll have a robot do the housework some day!
Text 6:
M: This is one of the nicest museum I’ve ever been to, and I’ve been to a lot of museums. It’s a pity Sandy couldn’t get that job. We’ve seen so little of him on this trip.
W: Well, he hasn’t been himself lately.
M: Is he still upset about his job?
W: Yes, he was really disappointed.
M: He can’t go on being sad forever. He has to start looking for something else.
W: Oh, no, it’s a great job, very similar to the one he didn’t get. It’s an even larger company, but it’s in Los Angeles. Sandy has a brother who lives there.
M: Does it look promising?
W: No, I really don’t think he’ll get it, and , well, I know this sounds selfish, but in a way I am happy. I mean, Los Angeles is two thousand miles from here.

M: Hello, Lena.
W: Hi, Kurt. How are you? It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you. Don’t you live in the dorm any more?
M: No, I moved out at the beginning of last semester.
W: Where are you living now?
M: I moved to the Oak Creek apartments. I’m sharing s unit with there other people, one from Brazil, one from Japan, and one from Hong Kong.
W: That sounds interesting. How are you getting along with your roommates?
M: Everything is working out just fine, at least up to now. They all share the cooking and I do the shopping since I have a car.
W: I guess that would work out. You must have all kinds of foods from different countries.
M; That’s right. I’m really enjoying my mealtimes!
W: How nice! I’d love to come over and meet your roommates sometime.
M: OK. How about coming for dinner? I’ll ask them about it and let you know.

(W) Now there’s a new kind of football or soccer that is played in America. It’s called car-soccer. The players drive small cars, which are called Beetles. The players try to catch the ball in their cars. The cars are protected all round since they often crash into each other. The ball is larger than the usual one and the players are protected too.
Last year the first European car-soccer match took place in Germany. Teams from France, Germany and Switzerland played in the match. The beetles raced around the ground madly while the spectators shouted, “ The ball is behind you !” When the match was over , many of the spectators were hurt badly and taken to hospital. Will this car-soccer be as popular as football? I doubt it.

W: Mr. Brown, is this your first time to have a health check?
M: Well, yes.
W: Are you a smoker?
M: Not really, but sometimes I do smoke a cigar, and it probably comes to once a month.
W: Do you sometimes feel like smoking more ?
M: Sometimes I suppose.
W: I mean if you keep to once a month. That’s probably OK. But do you drink any wine or beer?
M: Er, yes .I do. You want to know how much ?
W: Every day ?
M: That all depends. At the moment, I probably have a drink every day .
W: Just one ?
M: A couple of glasses of wine.
W: Well, that’s fine. Two glasses of wine every day is fine for a man . That’s fourteen units a week.
M: Ah, that’s good .

First of all, you should prepare the speech well. In this way you know clearly what you are going to say , and you won’t feel too nervous when you face many people.
When you are preparing your talk, you should answer the following questions yourself. The first one is “ What do you want to tell your audience?” Do you want to tell them to give up smoking or do you want to encourage them to learn English? You must be very clear about why you are making the speech. The second question is “ Who will be your audience? ”If you are talking to children then your talk should be simple; if you are speaking to older people, then your talk should not be too simple. The third thing you must know is how long you should be talking. And then you can make sure you talk will not be long or too short.
Don’t be afraid of talking in front of people. If you speak clearly, honestly and in a friendly way, you will make a good public speech .
