R: Hello, I’m a reporter from the local newspaper. I heard that because of the newspaper strike, the children earned a lot of money. Can you give me the detail of the matter?

B1: Of course. Several days ago, the newspaper strike which made it necessary to hand-deliver the advertising inserts that normally are included with the Sunday paper. The company had promised us $600 for delivering these inserts to 4,000 houses by Sunday morning.R: Did you have any difficulties in delivering the inserts?

B1: Yes.

R: What difficulties were you faced with?

B2: We have hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of pages of advertising in our house. They are crammed wall-to-wall all through the house. All the ad inserts must be delivered by seven o’clock Sunday morning.

M: Yes. At that time, the situation almost made crazy. There was only enough room for people to walk in. I also called to my husband who was on business to complain about it.

R: How did you solve the difficulty?

B1: We hired our younger brothers and sisters and a couple of neighborhood children to help for five dollars each. But because there were too many inserts, we worked for hours, they didn’t make a dent.

M: I found my children to solve problems with violence. And then I told my husband about it and hoped get some suggestions from him.

H: When I heard that from my wife, I was really very angry. I let my wife ask my eldest son answer the phone. I snarled to my son on the phone “I’ll kill you if you threaten one of those kids again!”

R: Did you give them some advice?

H: Yes. I suggested they offer a bonus of a dollar every hour to the worker who fills the most bags. My son worried such a step would cut into their profits. However, I told him If they don’t, they will have to remove all that paper by themselves.

R: Did the bonus program make everything go on well?

B2: No, some helpers were dissatisfied with the salary. They went on strike. The strike lasted less than two hours. In mediation, the parties agreed on $2 per hour. Gradually, the huge stacks began to shrink.R: Fortunately, the difficulties were solved finally. How much did you earn?

B1: $185 each.

H: It was a good income. By the time I arrived home, the boys had already settled their accounts. They listed the labor costs, the gasoline costs and the money they spent on buying gifts for our kind neighbors who helped a lot, and their mother in detail. They did well. After the matter, I really think that my children are grown up. I’m proud of them.
