enjoyment -- listening to music, watching theater,

and things like that. Many days went by and on and on 

like this -- always eating, sleeping, making merry, and nothing else. 

So the man began to feel a little bit "itchy". He said, 

"Well, can you give me some work to do? I'd like to do something."

The attendant was very sad and said, "I am sorry. 

We have no work for you here. With this I cannot help you." 

So the man said, "My God! If I have nothing to do, 

this could be like in hell." So the attendant said,

女孩子冬天爱穿的“长筒靴”

寒冷的冬季，各式各样的长筒靴成为街头一道亮丽的风景。如何表达秋冬季节备受女士青睐的“长筒靴”呢？碰巧在“美国偶像”的新闻中“捡”到了“thigh-high boots”，以此为话题，我们今天谈谈“长筒靴”。

A healthy dose of sunshine may be the secret to staying young, British scientists have revealed. 

    Vitamin D is produced naturally by the skin in response to sunlight and may help to slow the ageing process and protect against heart disease, according to the study. 

    Researchers from King's College London studied 2,160 women aged between 18 and 79, looking at their telomeres - a biological marker of ageing found in DNA. As people get older their telomeres get shorter and they become more susceptible to certain illnesses. 

    But the study found women with high levels of vitamin D had comparatively longer telomeres - a sign of being biologically younger and healthier. 

    The study suggests vitamin D may help to slow down the ageing process of DNA, and therefore the ageing process as a whole. 

    Lead researcher Dr Brent Richards said: "These results are exciting because they demonstrate for the first time that people who have higher levels of vitamin D may age more slowly than people with lower levels of vitamin D. 

    "This could help to explain how vitamin D has a protective effect on many ageing related diseases, such as heart disease and cancer." 

    He said further studies are required to confirm the findings. 

    Professor Tim Spector, head of KCL's twin research unit, and a co-author of the report, added: "Although it might sound absurd, it's possible that the same sunshine which may increase our risk of skin cancer may also have a healthy effect on the general ageing process." 

    Vitamin D made by the action of sunlight on the skin accounts for 90 per cent of the body's supply, but lower levels can also be obtained through food such as fish, eggs and breakfast cereals. 

Other studies have suggested the vitamin plays a key role in protecting against cancer and heart disease.

永远有多远

Forever 这个词的英文意思是“For everlasting time; eternally”，可以解释为“永远地，永恒地”，不受时间空间的，比如：No one can live forever. 无人能永生。因为它有“永远不会结束”的词意，这个词还常用来抱怨“表面上很长的时间”，比如：

It has taken forever to resolve these problems. 花了很多时间解决这些问题。

Everlasting 这个词很“直白”，就像字面意思一样，是“一直存在的”，所以也就是“永远，永恒”了，比如： No one has an everlasting life. 无人能永生。Everlasting 也可以用来表示抱怨因时间太久而“冗长的，令人厌烦的，没完没了的”，比如： She is tired of his everlasting complaints. 她受够了他没完没了的抱怨。

Eternal 是个音形义结合的很美的词，意思是“没有开始没有结束的，永恒的，不断的，不朽的，永生的”，想象一下上帝在人们心中的位置，就可以理解这个词了。总体来说，它是个褒义词，也最接近我们汉语中的“永恒”，比如：

Always 这个词也是“永远”，但是和 forever， everlasting 和 eternal 又不太一样，后三个词表示一种“永恒，无始无终”，但是always却是一种“有始有终”的永远，比如 I will always love you. 但如果死了，人都没了，爱也就不在了。Always 更多是表示一种“every time; on every occasion; without exception; all the time; continuously; uninterruptedly”，比如：

He always works on Saturday. 他周六总是工作。

There is always some pollution in the air. 空气总是有污染。

Always 更接近汉语中的“一直”。

Permanent 这个词也是译成“永远，永久”，但它的意思更多是“intended to exist or function for a long, indefinite period”，比如我们以前用的“永久墨水”就是 permanent ink。这个词是相对temporary来说的。

Perpetual 是不是看着很面生？如果你知道永动机的话，这个词也就不难了。 Perpetual motion machine 就是永动机。大家可以把 perpetual 理解成permanent，但是后者比前者更常见一些。

Indefinitely 这个词在新闻中比较常见，有一个说法叫“……无限期搁置delayed indefinitely”，所以 indefinitely 更多是“无限期地”，和永远好像还不太一样，比如： Nobody has the right to borrow the book indefinitely. 任何人都没有权利无限期地借阅这本书。

Timeless 也是一个“永远”，有点类似ageless，意思是“independent of time, unaffected by time不受时间影响的”。到底什么是timeless？我想《魔戒》中的精灵可以最好地诠释这个词吧，精灵是永生的，时间不会在他们的面容上留下痕迹。伟大的雕塑，伟大的音乐都是有永恒之美（timeless beauty）的。对于我们普通人来说，那些美好的记忆也可以是 timeless 的。

　　I'm still thinking about his words, and they've changed my life. I'm reading more and dusting less. I'm sitting on the deck and admiring the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. I'm spending more time with my family and friends and less time in committee meetings. Whenever possible, life should be a pattern of experience to savor（使有风味，尽情享受）, not endure. I'm trying to recognize these moments now and cherish them.

　　I'm not "saving" anything; we use our good china and crystal for every special event-such as losing a pound, getting the sink unstopped, the first camellia （茶花）blossom. I wear my good blazer （颜色鲜明的运动夹克）to the market if I feel like it. My theory is if I look prosperous, I can shell out （交付，支付）$28.49 for one small bag of groceries without wincing（畏缩）. I'm not saving my good perfume for special parties; clerks in hardware stores and tellers in banks have noses that function as well as my party-going friends'.

　　"Someday" and "one of these days" are losing their grip on my vocabulary. If it's worth seeing or hearing or doing, I want to see and hear and do it now. I'm not sure what my sister would have done had she known that she wouldn't be here for the tomorrow we all take for granted. I think she would have called family members and a few close friends. She might have called a few former friends to apologize and mend fences for past squabbles. I like to think she would have gone out for a Chinese dinner, her favorite food. I'm guessing--I'll never know.

          It's those little things left undone that would make me angry if I knew that my hours were limited. Angry because I put off seeing good friends whom I was going to get in touch with-someday. Angry because I hadn't written certain letters that I intended to write--one of these days. Angry and sorry that I didn't tell my husband and daughter often enough how much I truly love them.

　　I'm trying very hard not to put off, hold back, or save anything that would add laughter and luster to our lives.

　　And every morning when I open my eyes, I tell myself that it is special. Every day, every minute, every breath truly is ... a gift from God.
