There are few things as frustrating as rushing out the door, racing to the bus stop, getting on the bus and then remembering that you left the oven on or that you forgot the very thing which you were going out to deliver. Perhaps since the advent of contact lenses (眼镜),

How many times have you remembered the key you left in the car after you had carefully locked all the car doors? Or how many times have you caught yourself searching frantically for the pencil you held in your hand?
Memory, like almost everything else about us, is a matter of practice and exercise. Some people seem to be extremely skillful at remembering names or faces or shopping lists. Some people never forget a telephone number. And most of us know teenagers who have memorized

In the United States, people appear to be constantly on the move
Think
for
a
moment
How often do you see moving vans on the road? They seem to be everywhere. Are so many people
actually
changing their addresses?
Yes, people in the United States
are
indeed
on
the
move
Within any five year period,
about
one
third
of
the
population
change
their
place
of
residence
Every person who moves has his or her own personal reasons for making such a decision. Some people may decide to move
because
of
employment
opportunities
Some may wish to live in a warmer or colder climate. And some have many other reasons.
Regardless
of
their
specific
causes
the amount of movement in this country is substantial (大量的).

E-mail is a new way of communication for professionals in every area all over the world. It is a means of “meeting” people
with
similar
research
interests
or
problems.
E-mailers write letters
at
leisure
on their computers, then send them through their telephone line to an on-line terminal far away.
E-mail addresses either names or numbers
automatically
send mails to their right locations.
E-mailing is not a live conversation but, unlike the US "snail mail" as American e-mailers call their
postal
service
reply can be back at once or within hours,
depending
on
how
often
the
receiver
checks
in
his computer.
E-mail can also create friendship and
draw
families
closer
E-mailers sit in comfortable chairs and "chat" with the
unseen
friends or relatives in other parts of the country or of the world in front of the screen, feeling like meeting pals over a cup of coffee.
Linda, a first-year student at Oxford University in Britain,
drops
a
few
lines
to her mother in New York whenever she is near a terminal. "It's funny," says her mother. "We talk more now than when Linda lived upstairs. "
Sending e-mail is far cheaper than making long-distance calls and it may revive the almost lost art of letter writing. At the time when
telephone
service
is
becoming
convenient
and
highly
effective
Now e-mail has brought people back to their grammar, vocabulary, coherence and even spelling when
their

the
keyboard.
E-mailingl brings people together and makes the world smaller.

Many people now keep animals as pet. Numerous people have cats and dogs in their houses. Other people like fish,
cage
birds
tortoises and even snakes, monkeys or lions.
Millions of dollors and much time are spent every year on
pet
food
equipment
taming(驯化) and medical treatment.
Of course there are some people who do not look after their pets properly or are even curel to them.
For this reason, a royal society was created in 1824 in Britain to prevent crual treatment of animals.
In
contrast
to
the
love
of
pets
is the fact that blood sports still exist in most countries. People go hunting foxes, elephants, pandas, ducks, rabbits, pheasants(雉鸡) ,and other animals,or go fishing, not because they need the meat to eat
but
just
for
pleasure.
In some country, blood sports like bull fighting and cock fighting are commom and

It is strange that people love certain animals, but enjoy killing others, in cruel ways, too.

The mobile phone is becoming a status symbol all over the world. Many people think that if they are seen, or heard, using a mobile phone in a public place, other people will think that they must be very important. However, many people regard the use of mobile phones in public places as a nuisance(令人讨厌的人、东西或行为等),
especially
on
public
transport.
Recently, The South China Morning Post revealed that the authorities were considering the
possibility
of
banning
mobile phones from all theaters, concert halls, libraries and cinemas.
Take cinemas for example: under present regulations, cinema-operators
are
unable
to
do
anything
about
loud
telephone
conversations
in
the
middle
of
movies
What can be done about this problem?
At present, three courses of action are possible: firstly, some argue that people using mobile phones in cinemas
could
be
fined
in the same way that laws against smoking
are
enforced
Others suggest technical solutions to the problem:
special
devices
could
prevent
messages
getting
though
to
mobile phones, so that mobile phones can't work. The trouble is that these devices could also affect all other mobile phones near the cinema. For now
the
only
solution
available
seems
to
be
the
use
of
notices
libraries, cinemas and theatres currently display notices asking people to turn off their telephones. The trouble is, a lot of people take no notice of these notices!

If indeed silence is golden, it is also becoming as rare as gold. It seems
that
the
progress
of
man
includes
a
raising
volume
of noise. In every home a stereo or television will fill the rooms with sound. Between sunrise and sunset, streets and highways are
a
constant
source
of noise from cars, buses and trucks.
You can pass any factory or construction area and the roar of its machinery will
make
your
ears
ring
Music is played in every supermarket, most restaurants and many offices. Big cities of the world are well-known for their noisiness.
Noise
pollution
is
the
new
side
effect
of
our
technical
age
Day or night, the sound of work fills the air. It seems that the soothing (抚慰的) effects of silence are nowhere to be found. Even
the
quiet
of our carefully protected wilderness areas (公共莽原区)
can
be
invade
at
any
moment
by
a
passing
jet
We are learning, finally, that
silence
is
a
nature
resource
and
must
be
protected
by
law
It appears that we all find company in sound, but at the same time we all demand a little quiet from time to time.

The theatrical motion picture industry tends to be highly risky, with control lying in the hands of entrepreneurs. (企业家) Film-making
involves
high
financial
risks
and
huge
expenses
and studios (电影厂) making films therefore tended for many years to "play safe" and use themes, and stars,
who
are
known
to
be
box-office
successes
However, film-making has undergone massive changes in the last thirty years or so, for several reasons. First, with the
arrival
of television, there was for a time a huge slump(减少)in cinema audiences. It became harder
to
get
a
return
on
huge
investments
to make films, such as The Titanic, which only a small handful of the biggest studios could afford to make. Cinema audiences too were changing, becoming a great deal more sophisticated(高雅)in their tastes, and
this
created
opportunities
for
smaller
film
companies
to
make
more
unusual
more
experimental
films
which often, despite tiny budgets, were extremely successful. There is also an increasing understanding around the world that
it
is
not
healthy
for
this
huge
industrial
to
be
dominated
by
one
country
and there has been a significant rise in the number of film-making countries outside the US. For example, "Bollywood", the Indian film industry based in Bombay (now Mumbai) makes hundreds of films every year; other major players are Japan, and, increasingly, China.

The recent increase in car stealing has alarmed the police, who are looking for what they now believe must be a well-organized
gang
of
professional
car
thieves
Most of the thefts have taken place in
the
rich
residential
area
round Southwell Park,
where last week alone, twenty-two car thefts
were
reported
to
the
local
police
Of these, only one has been found,
abandoned
in the Rockinghill Palace Road, twenty miles away. The others have still not been found, except for one which had been
falsely
reported
missing
The owner later admitted that
he
had
forgotten
where he had parked it a few days before. An interesting aspect of these thefts is that nearly all the missing vehicles have been taken from
lot
garages
The owners now admit that they
may
have
left
the car doors unlocked, but only one owner was not certain whether he had locked the garage door. The police have therefore assumed that the gang find it easier
to
break
into
garages
where vehicles are often left unlocked at night, than into locked cars,
parked
on
the
roadside
in daytime or at night. They advised car owners to lock up their cars, even when they are kept in locked garages.

Vending machines (自动售货机) sell many different types of items. Some of them sell cold drinks like soda, or hot drinks like coffee or hot chocolate. Others sell candy, stamps, tickets, newspapers, and other types of small merchandise.
These machines have been successful for two reasons. They save time and they are convenient. Merchandise sold in machines
eliminates
the
need
for
a
salesclerk
or cashier.
In many places the customer can use the machines
at
any
time
of
day
or
night
Although there are many different
sizes
and types of vending machines, they all work in basically
the
same
way
The customer puts a coin into the machine and then
pushes
a(听不清,猜的)
bottom
pulls a lever, or opens a door to receive the merchandise. Some machines will also
return
change
to
the
customer
for
paper
money
But the basic idea is the same. Customers like to save time and are usually willing
to
pay
a
higher
price
for
this
convenience
The sale of snacks in vending machines has always been successful. However, machines now sell hot meals
with
only
limited
success
In New York City, automats used to sell a lot of hot food in vending machines. But in recent years, fast food establishments have replaced automats.

What do you know about the sea? Most of us have seen it. Many of us

And we also know that the sea

Waves are beautiful to look at, but they can destroy ships at sea, as well as houses and buildings near the shore. What causes waves? Most waves are caused by winds blowing over the surface of the water. The sun
