Help your child keep what he reads — a crucial skill, especially as he gets older and needs to gain important information from textbooks.

◆Have him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads. Plus, he's not only seeing the words, he's hearing them, too. 

◆Provide the right kinds of books. Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren't too hard. He should recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help. Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it tough for him to focus on the overall meaning of the story.

◆Talk to the teacher. If your child is struggling mightily with comprehension, he may need more help with his reading — for example, building his vocabulary or practicing phonics skills.

◆Supplement class reading. If his class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the topic. Some prior knowledge will make his way through tougher classroom texts.

◆Talk about what he's reading. This “verbal processing” helps him remember and think through the themes of the book. Ask questions before, _________________. For example:

People who drink a little, exercise, quit smoking and eat five servings of fruit and vegetables each day live on average 14 years longer than people who adopt none of these behaviors, researchers said on Tuesday ．A collection of evidence has shown that these things contribute to healthier and longer lives, but the new study actually qualified their mixed effect, the British team said．

 “These results may provide further support for the idea that even small differences in lifestyle may make a big difference to health, ” the researchers wrote in the journal PLOS Medicine．

Between 1993 and 1997 the researchers questioned 20，000 healthy British men and woman about their lifestyles．They also tested every participant’s blood to measure vitamin C intake．an indicator（指标）of how much fruit and vegetables people ate．

Then they assigned the participants-aged 45-79 a score of between 0 and 4，giving one point for each of the healthy behaviors．After allowing for age and other factors that could affect the likelihood of dying．the researchers found people with a score of 0 four times as likely to die．

The researchers, who tracked deaths among the participants until 2006，also said a person with a health score of 0 had the same risk of dying as someone with score of 4 who was 14 years older．

Do you want to work with people or animals or machines or tools? Do you want to work indoors or outdoors, directly serve people in need or serve people behind the scenes? These are the typical questions that a volunteer service agency would ask.

Every year, thousands and thousands of people in the west offer volunteer services. Volunteering greatly strengthens the community partly because it helps the old, the young, the weak, the sick, the disabled and the injured to overcome difficulties.

Volunteers usually help in many different ways. The may give people advice, offer friendship to the young, drive the elderly to church, counsel kids against drugs. Work as an assistant in a school or nursing home, raise funds, plant trees, help out in local libraries and do many other things.

Volunteering can be a few hours a week or a few hours a month, time during the day, evenings or weekends, either part time or full time. Anybody                can become a volunteer.

The art of volunteering is a process of both giving and receiving. Volunteering allows volunteers to meet new people and make new friends and mix with people from all walks of life. Volunteering is an excellent way to experiment, practice and try out new techniques and skills. It is much more effective to practice a skill than to read about it or study it in a classroom. Volunteering is a great way to develop good teamwork skills, discover your individual talents and explore career choices. Being a volunteer takes individuals on a wonderful journey and helps them learn many important things beyond their school learning.
