We have discussed about this question in the class and finally we arrive at a conclusion that we can stretch the learning styles by some strategy training in a long period. But how do we carry out the training? How do we relate some styles to some strategies? This journal tries to answer this question.
Learning styles include: visual---auditory---hands-on, extroverted--- introverted, more global---more particular, more synthesizing---more analytic, field-dependent---field-independent, reflective---impulsive. Learning strategies includes: Metacognitive, Cognitive, and Social/Affective.
For instance, perceptual styles of students in our class are almost visual. How can we stretch our styles to auditory through a period, say one year? Should we turn to Metacognitive training, Cognitive training or social/affective training?
| Stretched styles | Strategies needed | Possible activities(just list some examples) |
| Auditory | Cognitive | Watch English language TV programs or movies spoken in English; Listen to English radio programs ; |
| Extroverted | Cognitive and Social/Affective | To relax oneself when he feels afraid of using English; more pair work and group work. |
| Reflective | Metacognitive | Consider and reflect on the process of self-English learning; Make schedules for studying English. |
This above chart is only a preliminary idea about strategies training to stretch the learning styles. More need to be done in order to stretch the learning styles. And it is still questionable as to whether stretched learning styles can contribute to students’ study, in other words, whether it is useful to stretch learners’ learning styles.
