The Socio-Cultural Conflict between New and Traditional Asian-American

I have been living in America for almost a year; the top socio-culture conflict relevant to me lies between new Chinese-American and traditional Chinese-American cultures. Many Chinese friends often complain that it is difficult to live in a traditional Chinese family because there are too many invisible rites and ethical standards to follow after. “Tiger Mother” illustrates well-known common examples of such conflicts in US, which display the typical life styles of traditional Chinese families. For thousands of years, the Chinese have lived in a comparative stable and unchanging life, so they also act and think in traditional ways. Though Chinese people’s life has changed a lot since the open reformation policy, many people’s values towards life stay the same in various aspects. Even though new Chinese-Americans and traditional Chinese-Americans are geographically and physically living together, there are many cultural differences between them due to distinctive life styles and value philosophies. The new generations who are growing up in the US have diverse moral, ethics as well as attitudes in life. The disparate social structures between the modern and the traditional create many culture gaps at home and in society. The essay is mainly focusing at comparing the different families and work aspects between new and old Chinese-Americans, and the fundamental philosophy behind the culture issues to offer practical solutions to bridge the gaps in the future.

First, new and traditional Chinese-Americans hold different attitudes towards work. The modern Chinese believe that work is one of sources of happiness. Prof Xu, Hao, director of social psychology and disability research Centre of Tsinghua University, did a research on what makes people happy, and he concluded that passion and enthusiasm in work are the main factors that make people happy. He found that if a young man is out of his favorable work, his possibility of suicide rates maybe 40 times as greater as those who are not.  Most of the new Chinese-Americans have a shine educational background; For example, most of them hold at least a Bachelor degree or MBA from top universities in the world, such as Harvard, Stanford, and Berkeley; however 80% of them would rather choose some interesting but lower salary jobs than the higher paid ones which are boring work to them. In contrast, the traditional Chinese-American hold opposite views on work. Money is always the priority of selecting a job besides some other factors like whether the job is a decent one or whether the working conditions are satisfied. In a survey, 36.73% people work for raising the family, 23.% aim at having a high quality lifestyle, and only 12.87% endeavor to realize their personal value, which shows that most of traditional Chinese Americans are still struggling for rich life rather than enjoying work. Because of the distinctive attitudes toward work from diverse perspectives, many problems also arise in Chinese-American families such as family violence, divorce, marriage depression and frequent fight. In the paragraph four I will indicate the philosophy foundation of two cultures.

Secondly, the two parties’ view on the family values is slightly similar to each other because both of them believe in all happy families. Tolstoy once wrote, happy families are happy in the similar way while unhappy families are unhappy each in their own way. That is to say, both new and traditional parties think happiness of a family is the most enormous real happiness. The traditional concept about families still takes deeper root in the new Chinese-Americans. In accordance with a survey, nine out of ten people believe that their families are the essential and enduring part of their life, which is a reliable means of resisting the pressure and harmful threats from the chaos of society, culture shocks and extreme career load. Besides, the new group has laid stress on the harmonizing atmosphere of a family. Even between the husband and the wife, parents and children, sisters and brothers, they will perform themselves as well-mannered as possible. It defies traditional group’s understanding that we can hear the wife say “Thank you!” to her husband, or the older sister say “Sorry.” to her younger brother and the father say “Forgive me, please.” to his daughter, though they have lived together for a long time because the principle and value of family among the traditional group may be considered the most dominant with power in the families. As for the Chinese, a harmonious extended family is considered to be a blessing. It is highly related to the feudal society and Confucianism, which is the fundamental root in Asian culture. According to an Internet survey, more than 60% people think families are the most reliable people in the world, and 78.8% people hold that blessedness family is the biggest happiness in their life. Most women in the countryside dedicate most of their time and energy to their families. They seldom have their own interests except their eldership and children in their hearts. In cities, families are also important. When festivals come, especially the Chinese New Year, sons and daughters, no matter how far away from home they work, will go home with a lot of presents bought for their family members and reunite with their parents for the Eve’s huge dinner. Obviously, family comes first which deserves traditional group sacrifice for almost everything to support and protect it.

There are many similar big cultural problems for the Chinese-Americans in US, which also happen in other countries as well because ultimate culture assimilation or harmony would take several generations to achieve. In the US, the majority communications --- the usual way of life, are the eldership dictation in the family while the youth, who have formal education from the western countries, represent the key role of social reformations. Therefore, most of the conflicts often occur in the ordinary family daily life. Western scholars always argue that the reason causing Chinese people difference from the white people are because of Communism, which I think it is the funniest joke in my life. Both Communism and Capitalism are games that are played by  political policies, finding the perfect excuse used to attack each other; moreover, Communism or Marxism are only used by the Chinese central government since 1949, but Chinese culture has already lasted for over 4000 years. Certainly, there must be something else that rules traditional Chinese’s social behavior, moral virtues, as well as ethnics. Confucian moral is the real reason behind politics, which is largely influencing Asian countries. Confucian ideas are the foundation of Chinese philosophy for 4200 years deeply rooted in Chinese cultural DNA. Most of the time, Chinese people do not even realize that they are acting or thinking unconsciously following Confucius. One of the famous core principles that Confucianism has promoted is “Three Bonds”.  The Three bonds delineated the authority of the dominator over the minister, the father over children, and the husband over wife. Wei-Ming Tu, the director of Harvard- Yenching Institute, describes in his speech “Probing the ‘Three Bonds’ in Confucian Humanism, are based on dominance/subservience underscore hierarchical relationships as inviolable principles for maintaining social harmony.” Three bonds are only one of the theories inside Confucian philosophy to promote social stability. However, Confucianism, the Chinese soul, not only recommends all citizens the truth of life but also is required for over 3000 years.

As a member of the younger generation, I am strongly supporting the new way of life because I was one of the victims from the traditional style of family education because I wasted and missed over 10 years in my life to make my family happy living my childish way as so-called “my true ideal self” without doing much valuable to my family or to my beloved country -- China. Since the first day I came back to the normal Confucian Chinese self to devote to my family, I can feel that power from the society because everyone stands up to fight for his own life and family. Hence, I believe that cultural assimilation and harmony will undoubtedly achieve in the future in the long run though, in the short term, socio-cultural conflicts between new and traditional Asian-Americans will still go on in our community because it’s natural steps for history evolution.
