Many say their most painful moment is saying good-bye to those they love. After watching Cheryl, my daughter-in-law, through six long months her mother suffered towards death, I think the most painful moment was waiting to say good-bye.

   Cheryl made the two-hour trip over and over to be with her mother. They spent long afternoons praying, comforting, and retelling their shared memories.

   As her mother’s pain intensified and more medication was needed to ease her into sedation（镇静状态）, Cheryl sat for hours of silence watching by her mother’s bed.

In the summer of 1978 an English farmer was driving his tractor through a field of wheat when he discovered that some of his wheat was lying flat on the ground. The flattened (变平的) wheat formed a circle about six meters across. Around this circle were four smaller circles of flattened wheat. The five circles were in a formation like five dots (点). During the following years, farmers in England found the strange circles in their fields more and more often.

Text 10: Fred had heard stories of an amazing family tradition. It seems that his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all been able to walk on water on their 21 st birthdays to the boat club across the lake for their first legal drink. So when Fred’s 21 st birthday came around, he and his friend Brian took a boat out to the middle of the lake.

   Fred stepped out of the boat and nearly drowned. Brian managed to pull him to safety. Furious and confused, Fred went to see his grandmother. “Grandma,” he asked, “it’s my 21 st birthday, so why can’t I walk across the lake like my father, his father and his father before him?”
