2. Introduction: Product Descriptions

I.  Characteristics of Product Descriptions

       产品说明书是产品标识的重要组成部分，是用在产品上或包装上用于识别产品或其特征、特性所做出的各种表达和指示的统称。产品说明书主要用文字、符号、标志、标记、数字及图案等来表示，给销售者、购买者提供产品信息，帮助他们了解产品的性能、质量状况，说明产品的使用、保养条件，起到了指导消费的作用。许多产品说明的内容都标在产品或产品的包装上，让人一目了然，为用户、消费者挑选产品提供了方便。

       产品说明书在英语中通常有3种不同的说法，即Instruction（使用指导）、Direction

（指示、用法说明）、Description（说明书）。一份准确清楚的说明书，可以激起人们的购买

欲望，从而起到良好的宣传促销效果。英语产品说明书的结构，根据产品的性能、用途等方

面的不同，其结构形式也有所不同。产品说明书由标题和正文两大部分构成：

       1.  产品说明书的标题。虽然说明书的标题不如广告的标题重要，甚至有些说明书没有标题，但这不等于说产品说明书的标题不重要，从宣传效果上看，标题仍然很重要，它起到了引导作用，说明书的标题如同广告的标题，也分为直接性标题和间接性标题，有时还有副标题。

       2.  产品说明书的内容。一般有几个部分组成：产品的特征、功能和主要成分（结构）、 安装或者使用（操作）的方法、注意事项、主要性能指标及规格等。

       产品说明书的翻译要结合说明书自身的语言特点，也要注重信、达、雅在翻译过程中的作用，毕竟产品说明书是产品广告宣传的一个重要组成部分。产品说明表达不当，会给用户、消费者造成误解，诱发产品。

II. Translation of Product Descriptions

1.  语言简洁 

在进行公司介绍的翻译时，或直译或意译都应做到信息忠实。例如： 

说明书的句子结构都比较简单，在使用中经常使用一些简单句、祈使句；同时也注重使用一些名词、名词短语、复合词、动词及非谓语动词等的使用。

2.  客观、精确、具有感染力

说明书的目的是为了让消费者了解产品的特征和性能，以便做出正确的选择和正确地使用该产品。其内容客观真实、数据精确、语言通俗易懂，但也会适当地使用文学性语言来进行表达，以增强其可读性和感染力。

3.  条式风格突出，版面设计独特 

由于说明书所涉及的内容较多，一般采用条式性排列，使其内容清楚明了。同时为了达到吸引消费者的目的，往往采用一些不同于                

其他产品的特殊字体和版面模式来突出该产品，如黑体字标题，数字序号，特殊符号等。

 III．Methods of translation 

根据以上所述产品说明书的语言特点，一般来说，在翻译时要注意以下几点：

1.  遵循两条基本的翻译原则

（1）保持其技术和知识的传播性。说明书起着传播技术和知识的作用，介绍机件的工作原理或者产品的功能、主要技术参数或者主要成分构成。在翻译时，不得出现随意更改、漏译、误译，必须忠实于原文。例如：

This machine is equipped with a gear transmission mechanism, and its multi-dies are arranged in line. It can draw steel, aluminum, brass and other kinds of metal wires. 

译文：本机采用齿轮变速传动结构，串联组成多模连续拉丝机，可拉拔钢、铝或黄铜等金属线材。

（2）注意语言的可读性和感染力。由于说明书对广告具有辅助作用，其语言要做到通俗易懂，适当时候可以运用一些文学语言，以完成其广告效应。但同时又要注意不要过分夸大。例如：

① Add sugar and milk to taste.译文：加入适量的牛奶和糖，味道更佳。

② A nourishing beverage for all ages. An excellent gift in all seasons. 

译文：本品适宜于四季饮用，是老少皆宜的营养饮料，也是馈赠亲友之佳品。 

2.  熟悉英语产品说明书中的常用句型

句型是语言结构的要素，因此熟悉英文产品说明书中的常见句型对成功地翻译原文十分必要。

（1）（情态动词）be +形容词/过去分词+目的状语

该句型主要用于文章的开头，说明该产品的用途。例如：

 The product is used for creating your own hair style special for creating your look and shaping beautiful hair. 

译文：使用本品能将头发随意梳理定型，彰显个性，秀发出众。

类似常见类型还有：

       be used for …

       be used to …

       be used as …

       be designed to …

       be suitable to be used in…

       be available for/to …

       may be used to …

       be adapted for/to …

       be designed to be… so as to …

       be capable of… 

（2）（情态动词+）be+介词短语

这种句型用于说  明物体的特征、状态和范围，以及计量单位等。例如：

①The type CYJ15-18-18 oil pumping machine is of simple and compact construction. 

译文：CYJ15-18-18型抽油机的结构紧凑。

②The wiring should be in good condition and core flex should not be exposed.

译文：这些配线必须完好无算，中心导体不得裸露。 

（3）be + 形容词 + 介词短语

Motor pulley is provided with taper sleeve so as to be easy in installing and dismounting it. 

译文：电机皮带轮上备有锥套，便于安装和拆卸。 

（4）现在分词 + 名词

这种句型用于说明维修或操作程序及说明有关技术要求。例如：

Simultaneously cutting two pieces of sheet is strictly forbidden. 

译文：绝对禁止同时冲剪两块板材。

（5）名词+ 过去分词

Trouble: the stem sticky

Reasons: the stem bent; the spring broken; gland packing pressed too tightly

译文：故障：阀杆运动不灵活。

原因：阀杆弯曲；弹簧损坏；压盖填料压得太紧。

3.  按不同题材说明书进行翻译 

    各类产品的性质和用途不同，产品的说明书的方法及内容也各不相同。一般说来，说明书的翻译需要具备专业词汇或查阅专门词典，也更需要在平时学习中注意积累掌握。熟知各种不同题材说明书的语言及内容将有助于我们的翻译。下面是一些意思表达准确、语言简明规范的各类说明书翻译实例。 

4. 反译法是指翻译时从反面着笔把愿意表达出来，是英汉翻译中常用的一种方法和技巧。英汉两种语言在逻辑思维方面存在着差异，在翻译过程中有时有必要使用“反译法”，使译文反映出原文的风格意境。

       1.  英语从正面表达，译文从反面表达。

     （1）The claims mentioned above shall be regarded as being accepted if the sellers fail to reply within 30 days after the sellers received the buyer’s claim.

       译文：若卖方收到上述索赔后30天未予答复，则认为卖方已接受买方索赔。

     （2）It was beyond his power to sign such a contract.  

       译文：他无权签订这种合同。

     （3）The price is too high to be accepted.

       译文：价格太高，无法接受。

     （4）In this case, we were compelled to cancel the contract, rather than lodging a penalty against you. 

       译文：在此情况下，我方被迫撤约而未向贵方提出罚款。

     （5）In the absence of a settlement through negotiation, the case under dispute can be submitted to arbitration. 

       译文：如果通过谈判找不到解决办法，整治之事可提交仲裁。

       2.  英语从反面表达，译文从正面表达。

     （1）APEC will have to be non-discriminatory and it will have to seek to be open rather than closed in its approach. 

       译文：亚太经济合作组织必须一视同仁，并且态度上必须是开放的而非封闭的。

     （2）Brokers fielded frantic calls from investors in various stages of disbelief and agony.

       译文：经纪人现场回答投资者打来的万分激动的电话，这些投资者都处于程度不同的怀疑和痛苦之中。

     （3）The factory is now unprovided with the techniques necessary for the manufacturing of the product. 

       译文：工厂目前缺乏制造这种产品所需的技术。 

       3.  汉语从正面表达，译文从反面表达。

     （1）你们寄来价目单上的项目正是我们所需要的部件。

       译文：The items on your price list are none other than the spare parts of which we are currently in urgent need. (肯定形式的副词短语“正是”转换为否定形式的none other than，加强语气)

     （2）凭票退还押金。

       译文：No deposit is to be refunded unless the ticket is produced. （把表示肯定意义的句子转换成使用双重否定的连结词短语no…unless结构，加强语气）

     （3）今天，只要我们走出几步路，就一定会注意到广告。

       译文：Today we cannot walk a few steps without noticing advertising.

（此句采用了反译法，译为否定句。）

       4.  汉语从反面表达，译文从正面表达。

     （1）所有物品的价钱还不到两镑。

       译文：All items cost under two pounds. （否定形式的动词短语“不到”转换成介词under）

     （2）这次损失的主要原因在于包装不良。

       译文：The damage appears to have been mainly caused by the faulty packing of the good. （否定形式的形容词 “不良”转换成肯定形式faulty）

     （3）若买方未能开立信用证，卖方有权全部或部分撤销售货确认书，不再另行通知。

       译文：If the buyer fails to open the Letter of Credit in time, the seller shall have the right to rescind, without further notice, the whole or any part of this Sales Confirmation.  （表示否定意义的动词短语“未能开立”转换成肯定形式fails to open） 

       5.  有些句子，既可使用反译法，又可保持原来的肯定或否定形式，这完全取决于语境和译者的偏好，例如：

     （1）请不要说话。

       译文一：Please keep silence.

       译文二：No talking, please,

     （2）Law is no respecter of persons.

       译文一：法律决不偏袒任何人。

       译文二：法律面前人人平等。

     （3）我们一定等你回来。

       译文一：We’ll surely wait until you are back home.

       译文二：We won’t leave until you are back home. 

VI. Translation techniques：

  一、机电产品说明书（1）

       机电产品说明书主要用于帮助使用者掌握该设备的操作方法，包括用途、产品规格、操作须知、维护及保养等。

     （1）对用途的说明

       These versatile wheeled tractors are reliable enough to tackle a variety of field jobs such as ploughing, harrowing, seed drilling, cultivating, harvesting, etc.

       译文：这种多用途轮式拖拉机适用于犁、耙、播种、中耕、收割等多种田间作业。

     （2）对产品规格的描述

       Processing range: 6.5mm~2.4mm   output: 3.5t/shift~5 t /shift

       译文：加工范围：6.5毫米~2.4毫米  输出功率： 3.5吨/转~5吨/转

     （3）对设备特点的说明

       Simple construction, easy operation and maintenance, comparatively high productivity. 

       译文：结构简单，操作容易，维修方便，生产率较高。

     （4） 故障排除

       Trouble: The shaver does not work when the ON/OFF button is pressed.

       Solution: replace the batteries. If the shaver still does not work, see “Guarantee & service”.

       译文：问题：按下按钮开关后剃须刀不工作。

    解决方法：更换电池。如果剃须刀仍然不能工作，请参阅“保证及                                 维修服务”。

     （5） 安全警示说明

       Prevent the appliance from getting wet.  

       译文：确保剃须器与电线保持干燥。

       Remove the batteries from the appliance if you are not going to use it for quite some time.  

       译文：长时间不使用本设备，请取出电池。

     （6）操作说明

       Switch the appliance on by pressing the switch lock and pushing the ON/OFF button upwards. 

       译文：按下开关键并把开/关键往上推，便可启动本设备。

        二、食品类说明书（1）

       食品是人类生存不可缺少的，食品说明应包括产品的构成成分、食用方法、保健作用、保质期、存放方法等。

     （1）食品成分

       Ingredients: fresh beef of high quality, sugar, chilly oil, sesame oil, salt, condiments.

       译文：配料：优质鲜牛肉、白砂糖、辣椒油、芝麻油、盐、香料。

     （2）食用方法

       ①For drinking hot: put two or three teaspoonfuls of Lacovo in a cup, then add hot water and stir until the grains are thoroughly dissolved.

       译文：热饮：取乐口福两至三茶匙，然后倒入适量开水，搅拌至完全溶解。

       ② Edible after opened.

       译文：开袋即食。

     （3）健康作用

       Regular use of the cream results in the increase of skin cell vitality and improvement of metabolism to restore youthful fairness of the skin.

       译文：经常搽用本品，可增强皮肤细胞活力，促进新陈代谢，保持皮肤洁白、红润，延缓衰老。

        三、医药产品的说明书（1）

     （1） 药物性状

       It is a white or a faintly yellow powder to which appropriate amounts of water are added to prepare an off white suspension for intramuscularly use or a yellowish solution for intravenous administration.

       译文：它是一种白色至微黄色粉末，加适量水可配制成近乎白色的悬浊液，供肌肉注射用，或配制成黄色的溶液，供静脉注射用。

     （2）药物作用

       It is a bactericidal antibiotic which is resistant to most B-lastamases and is active against a wide range of gram positive and gram negative organism.

       译文：它是一种抗菌素，不但能抵抗大多数内酰铵酶，而且抵抗各种革兰氏阳性和革兰氏阴性细菌。

     （3） 适应症

       It is indicated for the treatment of infection before the infecting organism has been identified or when caused by sensitive bacteria.

       译文：在感染细菌未被确认出来，或由敏感细菌引起感染时，本药品使用。

     （4）禁忌

       ①It should not be used in patients with known sensitivity to the drug.

       译文：对该药物过敏者禁止使用。

       ②The following adverse reactions may occasionally occur: dryness of the mouth, thirst, drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, heartburn, anorexia, abdominal discomfort and exanthema.

       译文：偶尔可能出现下列副作用：口干、口渴、发困、乏力、头晕、心部烧灼感、食欲不振、腹部不适、药疹。 

       化学类用品的使用要格外严谨。一般来说，其内容主要包括产品作用、使用方法、注意事项等。

     （1）产品作用

       It moisturizes your skin in hot, cold and dry climate conditions, taking extra care of your skin against the drying effect of the sun, helping prevent dry skin and protecting your skin from additional loss of skin moisture.

       译文：无论是酷热、寒冷或是干燥的气候，本产品都能滋润您的皮肤，具有防晒，预防皮肤干燥、锁水保湿等功效。

        四、化学用品类说明书（2）

     （2）使用方法

       Wash the face with lukewarm water and evenly rub a little amount all over, twice daily, one in the morning and the other in the evening, and the satisfactory effect will soon be obtained.

       译文：早晚两次，用温开水洗脸后取本品少许，均匀搽遍面部即可收到满意效果。

     （3）注意事项

       Do not spray over food or tableware. Do not use or store near fire. Do not strike. It should be kept in cool place and kept away from the children.

       译文：勿向食物和食具喷洒。勿在近火源处存放或使用。勿敲撬。宜放在阴凉、儿童不易碰到的地方
