When your parents are busy at work and have no time to cook, you can pick up the phone, order some food for yourself and the food will arrive at your home soon. Lots of people order takeout food these days. But did Chinese people eat takeout in the past?

The answer is yes! There was takeout as far back as the Song Dynasty(960-1279). People at that time didn’t have phones, but they could still order food. According to history books, Emperor Xiaozong (宋孝宗)(1127-1194) liked to order takeout late at night. His servants then went around the city to pickup the dishes and bring them back.

Common people also liked to order takeout. Restaurant workers walked around the city or waited outside of theaters. They shouted loudly which dishes could be ordered that day. People paid them and then the workers would send food to their homes
