| As far back as 700 BC, man has talked about children being cared for by wolves. Romulus and Reruns, founders of ancient Rome, were said to have been brought up by wolves. It is believed that when a she-wolf loses her litter, she tries to find a human baby to take its place. This seemingly unreasonable idea did not become believable until the nineteenth century when a French doctor actually found a boy wandering in a forest. The boy had no clothes on and was judged to be ten years old by some experts. He did not walk straight up like a human being, but with both his hands and feet touching the ground. The boy could not speak but howled like a wolf. He did not eat any cooked food but raw meat such as hare, deer, or goat meat. He knew nothing about the relationships among human families. Finally the doctor won the boy's trust, and the boy started to obey him. After many long years of devoted and patient instruction, the doctor managed to get the boy to dress himself in clothes and feed himself as a human being does. With great difficulty, the doctor was able to make the wolf-boy recognize and speak quite a few words. |

| Smoking, which may be a pleasure for some people, is a serious source of discomfort for their fellows. Further, medical authorities express their 21 about the effect of smoking 22 the health not only of those who smoke but also of those who do not. In fact, nonsmokers who must 23 inhale(吸入) the air polluted by tobacco smoke may 24 more than the smokers themselves. As you are doubtless 25 , a considerable number of our students have joined in an effort to 26 the university to ban smoking in the classrooms. I believe they are entirely right in their aim. 27 , I would hope that it is 28 to achieve this by calling on the smokers to use good judgment and show concern 29 others rather than by regulation. I am therefore asking you to maintain No Smoking in the classrooms, seminar rooms and auditoriums. This will prove that you have the non-smokers' health and well-being 30 , which is very important to a large number of our students. |

The job I like best
In the past three years of my college life I have never ceased to think what kind of work I shall take up upon graduation. Although my ideas are not consistent, I have decided on a college teacher as my life-long career.
A variety of reasons have led me to choose this occupation over other more lucrative ones. First, teaching is learning. To make my lectures more constructive and stimulating, I have to read more books, explore new knowledge and gain a better understanding of the world the very thing I enjoy in my life. Second, teaching means freedom and independence. As a teacher, I’m free to use my own ideas and make my own decisions, a privilege not everyone can have, even those with highly-paid positions. Finally, I like teaching because it offers certain peace of mind. No more rushing to catch a morning bus, no more anxiety to please a boss, no more worries about your paycheck which is steady, if not handsome.
Nothing, not even a big salary, can equal for the opportunity to continue learning,
The satisfaction of being your own boss,
and a gentle peace of life.
