一、课程概述
(一)课程介绍
This course will be a seminar (group discussion) style class in which students will have a discussion based on readings and other material given to the students before class. A Group of students will be notified in advance that they will be 'discussion leaders', and several other students will called on randomly during the discussion. The topics covered will include several major areas of importance for students to understand in a globalized economy.
(二)教学目标
This course is designed to improve students speaking ability and confidence while developing their awareness of several major issues impacting international business today.

第一章 Ethics
【本章教学目标和要求】:
This unit is to help students understand the importance of ethics in business, especially in light of the recent wave of ethical scandals (Enron, Worldcom, Sanlu, etc.). Students are required to do the readings, and make informed comments and opinions during the discussion
【本章重点、难点】
-The key point is the importance of ethics and the consequences of a lack of ethics
-Students may have difficulty with concepts or vocabulary, and discussion time will include opportunities for explanation and clarification

Will include the documentary “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room”, and several articles on Enron, and how a lack of ethics contributed to the recent economic crisis

第二章: Business Blunders
【本章教学目的和要求】
This unit to help make students aware of the importance of understanding the language and culture of other countries will conducting business internationally. This will be done by using humorous examples of business ventures which went awry due to a lack of cultural/language understanding.
Students are required to do the readings, and make informed comments and opinions during the discussion.
【本章重点、难点】
-Teaching will emphasize potential blunders in wording, translation, grammar, and culture
-Difficult areas will be in explaining points students are not already familiar with (making them familiar with areas where they might also make mistakes)

The group discussion will be based on a reading from the book: “Blunders in International Business”.

第三章: International Business
【本章教学目的和要求】
This unit to help make students aware of the countervailing forces of globalization and localization, and strategies companies can use to balance the two. Further students will explore strategies that companies from developing countries (such as China) can use to compete with companies from developed countries (such as the US).
Students are required to do the readings, and make informed comments and opinions during the discussion.

-Reading 1-2 will emphasize the importance of maintaining a local touch which expanding internationally, while reading 1-3 will emphasize how local companies can beat global competitors.
-Students may have difficulty with concepts or vocabulary, and discussion time will include opportunities for explanation and clarification

The group discussion will be based on a reading from the book: “Transnational Management”, and will include reading 1-2 “Managing in Borderless World” and reading 1-3 “Going Global: Lessons from Late Movers”.

第四章: Case Study: Acer
【本章教学目的和要求】
This unit will require students to apply the knowledge they have learned in class (and in their major) to analyze a real decision which faced a real company (Acer computers). Furthermore, students will begin preparing for their final project based on this case study.
Students are required to do the readings, and make informed comments and opinions during the discussion.

-Students will need to understand both the major issues in the case study, and how to make an effective presentation based on that information.
-Students may have difficulty with concepts or vocabulary, and discussion time will include opportunities for explanation and clarification

The group discussion will be based on a reading from the book: “Transnational Managment”, case study 1-2 “Acer, Inc.: Taiwan's Rampaging Dragon”.

Final Project: Boardroom
【本章教学目的和要求】
During this project, students will be required to make a presentation to a simulated group of company executives giving their recommendation on a major decision facing the Acer company in 1994 (Case study 1-2, from unit 4). This will count as the students' final exam.
