Case:
Li Hong, a Chinese girl, studied in the United States and then worked in an American company in New York. When working in the company, Li Hong became friendly with one of her co-workers, an out-going American girl named Mary Brown. Li Hong succeeded in building a good relationship with Mary at the very start. The two girls usually ate lunch together and talked about their life, works, habits and other things. Mary is more experienced than Li Hong in working. Therefore, Mary gave Hong a lot of advice and helped her move from one apartment to another. The two became closer and closer. They regularly had lunch together when working on weekdays. Li Hong visited Mary to have a dinner in her house at times or invited Mary to go shopping with her on weekends. Sometimes they did not see each other over because of something over the weekend then they often talked on the telephone instead. Li Hong was very happy to have a friend like Mary when working alone in another country. She regarded Mary as a very close and important person to herself and wanted to share everything in her life with Mary and wants to know everything about Mary.
However, something seemed to be changing. A few days later, Mary became quite impatient when talking with Li Hong, even a little cold between times .What’s more, she started going out by herself at lunchtime instead of eating with Li Hong, and refused Li Hong’s invitations on weekends. When Li Hong met some problems in working, Mary didn’t seem to want to answer Li Hong’s questions. Li Hong was puzzled. She didn’t want to lose her good friend, but she couldn’t find what the problem is. The two girl’s friendship was facing a big challenge.
Analysis:
That is the cross-cultural differences in sensation. People have different cultural background have different attitudes towards what is true friendship. In China, people usually have the idea that true friends should share everything with each other. More than that, they think it is normal that friends have meals together, go shopping together and have a chat when feeling bored or upset. In Chinese people’s opinion, friends mean having no secrets sometimes. That is also what Li Hong thought about in this case. She wanted to build a very close relationship with Mary. However, Mary couldn’t understand Li Hong’s attitudes towards friendship. In western country, people have quite different thoughts. They think even close friends should leave each other some private space. If people care about them too much, they may feel being invasion of privacy. It is quite possible that Mary had the same feeling in this case. On the one hand, Li Hong was so enthusiastic when getting along with Mary that Mary felt having no private space. So she chose to stay a little far away from Li Hong. On the other hand, Li Hong didn’t realize what she did bothered Mary so much. Therefore, Li Hong felt confused and sorry but couldn’t know what the problem is.
Solutions:
As the two girls have different attitudes towards friendship, they should have a deep communication on friendship. It is precious that they could make friends with each other. They will feel sorry if they don’t try to make up for the circumstance. To change the ice ages, Mary should tell Li Hong that Li Hong’s actions made her feel being invasion of privacy. What’s more, Mary should explain that what she has done is just a sign of protecting her private space but not breaking off relations. Therefore, Li Hong can figure out what the problem is. Besides, Li Hong should explain to Mary why she wanted to share everything in her life with Mary. The two girls will understand each other more, what may help repairing the friendship. Maybe they can’t reach a common view on what is true friendship, but they will feel more comfortable while getting along with other after the deep conversation.
The meanings people attach to their sensation are greatly determined by their cultural background. Language and actions reflect the difference of cultural background. As a result, everyone is likely to be faced with the situation like this case when getting along with other people as cross-cultural differences are everywhere. There is some ways to solve the problems we will meet. For example, when we meet someone who has different cultural background from us, it is necessary for us to learn about the difference of what we will talk about in our culture. If we can’t prepare for the conversation so well, it may come to a cross-cultural difference and we probably don’t realize at first. But it doesn’t matter. What is important is that we should find why there is a cross-cultural difference and try to find the key to solve it. Firstly, we should realize that it is normal that people in different culture have different attitudes towards something like friendship and try to calm down. Secondly, we should figure out that if there is something we did improperly. If any, we ought to make something to make up for it. Thirdly, we should explain what caused the situation to people we make communication with to make them understand and feel free. Then we should try our best to reach a common view on the situation. Therefore, the problem resulted from the cross-cultural difference can be solved to a certain extent.
As we can know, it was because the two girls’ attitudes towards true friendship that Li Hong and Mary were faced with the problem. They will not have problems in making friend if they make a deep conversation in time. As a conclusion from this, communication is very important and necessary when it comes to a cross-cultural difference. Different sensation resulted from different cultural background is not a big problem if we try our best to figure out the difference ,behave politely and do well in communicating with each other.
