Directions: Choose one topic among the following topics as you like and write a term paper of about 1,000 words. In your paper, you should present your thesis statement, provide appropriate supporting details and bring what you have written to a natural conclusion. Marks will be awarded for content, organization, grammar, appropriacy and creativity. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks.
1. Based on the knowledge you have learned about word formation, write an essay or paper in 1,000 words, talking about how English words are made. Your essay or paper can include the following aspects of questions:
1)Are the ways of word formation related to each other?
2)Why is acronymy so prevalent in such spelling languages as English?
3)Do you think there are any other ways of word formation?
Your creative ideas in English word formation are preferred.
2. Linguists define the scope of lexicology differently. How do you understand the scope of lexicology? Please discuss it.
3. There are some types in word meaning, and the transformations of word-meaning
follow a number of patterns. Based upon the contents in your textbook, choose one of the following topics and write a term paper:
1) What are the types of meaning? Based on some type of meaning, analyze the relationship between the type of meaning and your choice of topic or theme, then give concrete examples.
2)Apart from the types of meaning discussed in class, what other types of meaning you can find both in English and Chinese? After the discussion of the types of meaning, what is/ are your original idea(s) of meaning?
3)What are changes in word meaning? Discuss one of them with rich examples.
4)Apart from the changes of meaning discussed in class, what other changes of meaning you can find both in English and Chinese? After the discussion of the changes of meaning, what is/ are your original idea(s) of meaning?
4. There are two major tendencies of the development of word meanings. They are radiation and concatenation. Please provide your own examples and discuss their interactions in the change of word meanings. Pay attention to the metaphorical role in them.
5. Advertising English has its unique way in the choice of words, what do you think are the characteristics of Advertising English in this aspect? Please provide examples and discuss them.
6.English idioms can be classified into different types in terms of idiomaticity, how do you understand the term “idiomaticity”? Please make a comparison between English idioms and Chinese idioms in this regard.
7.According to the relationship of meaning and context, write a paper concerning one of the two topics:
1) What is context? What are types of context? Can you apply Context Theory to the study of English learning or teaching from the perspective of word meaning, sentence structure or discourse analysis?
2) What other areas can you associate Context Theory with? Please provide convincing examples.
8. Account for types of clues and devices we can utilize in guessing new words from contexts.
9.How can we have a better understanding of English words? Illustrate with examples.
10.Compare the similarities and differences between or among different processes of word-formations
11.To state the importance of roots and affixes with examples in our English-learning .
12.State the roles affixes and word-roots play in riddles or advertisements with examples.
13. To write a paper about word-constitutes and their meanings.
14. How does a good knowledge of roots and affixes help us in our understanding and learning new words?
15. Any other topic involved in what we have discussed in this course (the one you feel interested in)

for A Term Paper for English Lexicology

The term paper may be graded into five levels (excellent, very good, adequate, fair or weak) based on its content, organization, grammar, appropriacy and creativity. And each of them occupies 20 percent of the total marks.
Excellent:
sufficient content, completely logical organizational structure and effective arguments and supporting details, wide range and fluent control of grammatical structures, appropriate diction, innovative theme statement.
Very good:
good content, organizational structure well-presented and relevant arguments and supporting details, effective use of an adequate range of grammatical structures, very good diction and valuable theme.
Adequate:
less complete content, clear but limited organizational structure, some arguments unsupported or details irrelevant, adequate range of grammatical but could be used more effectively, better diction and common theme.
Fair:
conveying its message with difficulty, apparently logical breakdowns, restricted range and uncertain control of grammatical structures and vocabulary, acceptable theme.
Weak:
Inadequate conveying its message, logical organization absent and no suitable details, messy grammatical structures , poor utilization of words and undeserving theme.
