Fathers Love

Narrator: Dolly’s father and mother had been divorced when she was 4 years old, and she lived with her mother since then. In Dolly’s heart, she blamed herself for their divorce and thought her parents didn’t love her. Usually, she celebrated Christmas with her mom. But this year, now she is 8, her father wants to celebrate it with her, so she goes to her father’s place. Now they are in the living room.

Scene I 

Dolly: Daddy, when will Santa Claus come tonight?

Father: Sweetie, Santa Claus won’t come tonight. 

D: Why won’t he come? Am I bad? 

F: No, honey. It’s not your fault, you know, Santa Claus is busy at Christmas.

D: I don’t think so, daddy. It must be me who made him not want to come. And it must be me who made you and mom not live together. It’s my fault. I am a bad girl. (Dolly starts crying)

F: Listen, honey. It’s not your fault, it’s our own problems and it has nothing to do with you. Now, will you stop crying? Daddy has to go out for a while and I’ll be right back very soon.

D: Okay, all right, daddy, I won’t cry, and I will stay here waiting for you.

F: Way to go, my girl. (Father’s out. Dolly plays with her toys. )

N: Father’s going to borrow some clothes to dress up like a Santa Claus, but it is Christmas now. It’s really hard for him to borrow a costume. At last… (There’s a knock on the door. Dolly goes to open the door. It’s Santa Claus.)

D: Thank you. That’s fantastic!

F: Sweetheart, I’m too busy now and I have to say goodbye now. See you next year!

D: See you!

Narrator: Dolly loves the gifts sent by Santa Claus very much. But she doesn’t know that it’s her father who tried to realize her little dream. She still holds the view that her father doesn’t love her at all.

Scene II

N: Now Dolly’s 17. Her mother bought her a Porsche as her birthday present. She loves driving it and often drives it to go and hang out with her friends at night. Her father is worried about her safety. He wants to persuade her not to drive again. Dolly is back home and a little drunk. 

F: Hi, you’re back, sweetie. Oh, my god, you’re drunk. Honey, could you promise not to drive again, because you’re too young to have a driving license and you’re a girl, it’s not safe for a girl to drive at night.

D: No, daddy, I love driving. The car is the only thing that belongs to me. You two don’t stay with me, but my car’s there waiting for me. I won’t quit driving. 

F: Sweetie, please, stop driving. Consider your safety, will you?

D: No, absolutely not. You don’t care about me, or else, you wouldn’t get divorced, and would be back together during these years. You don’t love me at all.

Scene III

N: Dolly is 27 now. She met a great guy and they fell in love with each other. After dating for 2 years, they want to get married and they are going to share this great news with her father. But when she arrives, she finds that her father is seriously sick. He lies on his bed, and can’t get up by himself. They are in her father’s bedroom.

D: Dad, this is Ross, Ross, this is my dad.

R: Nice to meet you, Mr. Green.

F: Nice to meet you, Ross. Take a seat.

R: Thanks, Mr. Green, since Dolly and I love each other and we know that we’re each other’s “the one”, so can I marry her? 

F: Honey. Can I have a word with my future son-in-law?

D: Okay, dad.

F: Well, when it comes to marriage. I want to tell you something first. Dolly is a good girl, and as you know, she grew up in a single-parent family. It’s our fault that we made her live in such a family. She often senses a lack of security and needs more care and love. If you want her to be your wife, will you promise to love her and care for her until life ends?
