Miss Rose taught physics in a London school. Last week she was explaining to one of her classes about sound, and she decided to test them to see how successful she had been in her work. She said to them, “ Now, I have a sister in Washington. If I was calling her on the phone, and at the same time you were 20 meters away, and listened to me from the other side of the street, who would hear what I said earlier, my sister or you, and why?”
The cleverest boy at once answered, “Your sister, Miss Rose, because electricity travels faster than sound waves.”
“That’s very good,” Miss Rose answered. But then one of the girls put up her hand, and Miss Rose said, “Yes, Betty.” “I don’t agree,” Betty said, “Your sister would hear you earlier because when it’s eleven o’clock here, it’s only six o’clock in Washington.”

There are some easy things you can do to protect the environment and the earth. Choose ideas from the list or come up with a few of your own.
●Plant flowers, grass or trees.
●Whenever you visit a park or beach, take away what you bring there—keep rubbish in a bag until you can put it in a dustbin.
●Turn off the lights, TV sets when you leave the room. This saves a lot of electricity (电).

●Keep the doors and windows closed in winter to keep warm air in.
●Give your old books and magazines to a library instead of throwing them away.
●Give your old clothes to poor children you know instead of throwing them away.
●Use both sides of paper.
●Stop pouring dirty water into the rivers or lakes nearby.
●Encourage all your friends to do the same things you do to help protect the earth.

Now some women are spending a weekend at Mother’s Camp(营地). There, husbands and children are not allowed. Why would a woman want to take a vacation without her family? Some women say they need time to be alone.
At Mother’s Camp a woman has room to herself. She can sleep, read or watch TV, and no one will bother her. No children will ask, “Mom, what’s for dinner?” No husband will say, “Oh, dear, I can’t find any clean socks.” In fact almost 50% of women in the United States work outside the home. Many of them work full-time and then come home to a second job----taking care of their homes and families. These working women say one of their biggest problems is housework.
In the United States, working wives do about 75% of the housework. Many of their husbands say they want to help. But then they burn the rice or they can’t find the pans. They ask so many questions that their wives decide it is easier to do the job themselves.
Some women go to Mother’s Camp just to get a break from housework. For two days they don’t cook, they don’t clean, they don’t look after their children and husbands. What do they do? What’s the meaning of “dark horse”? It’s someone who wins when no one expects it. Han Xiao’peng took China’s first gold on snow. He became an Olympic “dark horse” last Thursday by winning the gold medal in men’s freestyle aerial skiing(自由式滑雪空中技巧) at Turin in Italy. He made two almost perfect jumps for the highest score. Han had never won a world gold medal before, let alone(更不用说) in the Olympics!
“I never thought this would happen,” said the 23-year-old. “I feel like I’m in a dream.” It’s China’s second gold medal at the Turin Olympics. But more important, Han’s gold was the country’s first ever in a snow sport. In 2002, China’s Yang Yang won the gold for speed skating at the winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, US. Just because Han’s win was unexpected doesn’t mean that he didn’t work hard.
Han grew up in Jiangsu Province. Before he started his training on snow, he used to be an acrobat(杂技演员) at a circus. In 1995, a coach found his talent(才能). The coach, Yang Er’qi, said Han had the agility(灵活性) and courage to be a ski jumper. When Yang first took the 12-year-old to northern China, the boy couldn’t swim, skate or ski. But he wasn’t afraid of the high platform(跳台) and kept on training.
Han almost left the sport after hurting his knee months before the Salt Lake Games. In that Olympics he only got 24th. “I was hopeless at that time, but my family and the coach stood firmly(坚强地) behind me, helping me through,” he recalled.
Han Xiaopeng worked so hard that he won the gold medal in the Olympics at last. Because of his success, more and more people in China are becoming interested in skiing. We are proud of him and we hope he will have another big success in the next winter Olympics.

We are going to visit the Science Museum tomorrow. We will meet at the school gate at eight in the morning and we will go there on foot. Teacher said we should listen and watch carefully and write down sometimes interesting when we visit the museum. At the same time we can’t make any noise in the museum and take any pictures.
People say that time is money, but I think time is more important than money. Time is just like one’s life. When it is gone, it will never come back. However, some students don’t know that. They spend too much time watching TV or waste a lot of time playing computer games.
As students, we must treasure every minute and make full use of our time . We should study hard so that we can do more contributions to our country in the future.
