Knut lived in Berlin’s zoo. He was four and raised by zookeepers since a cub (幼崽) after his mother deserted him.
Now reports say the attentionloving polar bear was found dead in a pool in his cage at the Zoologischer Garten Berlin Saturday, with no immediate cause of death announced.
“This is awful,” said Berlin’s mayor Klaus Wowereit, according to the Sydney Herald. “We had all taken him to our hearts. He was the star of the Berlin Zoo.”
Most reports say Knut was alone when he died, as visitors watched him suddenly fall into the water. The known news site TMZ.com carried news of his death and says People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals’ German branch had previously complained that Knut suffered a lot from his mother and other bears.
Knut was very famous to many people, only because he seemed to love the limelight (出风头). After his first performance at the popular zoo, he became its star attraction, raising much income for the zoo and producing toys, DVDs and more. He was not diagnosed as being ill at the time, reports say. An investigation (调查) into the cause of his death is underway.
To everyone’s surprise, his beloved keeper, Thomas Doerflein, also died at an early age. Doerflein died at 44 in 2013 in his apartment after he had fed the cub and slept by its side, but later was told no longer to play or wrestle with Knut. At that time Knut was becoming an adult polar bear and considered too dangerous to interact with closely. Doerflein reportedly suffered a heart attack. Knut acted unhappily after his friend’s death.

China officially announced direct currency(货币)trading with Singapore in China Foreign Exchange Trade System on Monday, marking another important push forward for China and Singapore’s economic ties.
The announcement was made by Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli during a series of meetings between senior officials from both countries, co-chaired by Zhang and Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean in Suzhou city, Jiangsu Province in eastern China.
The meetings include the 11th meeting of China-Singapore Joint Council for Bilateral(双边的)Cooperation, the 16th China-Singapore Joint Steering Council Meeting for the Suzhou Industrial Park, and the seventh China-Singapore Joint Steering Council Meeting for the Tianjin Eco-city.
The move is important for the formation of a direct exchange rate between the RMB and Singapore dollar. It will help reduce exchange costs for economic players and promote the use of each other’ s currency in bilateral trade and investment, the People’ s Bank of China said on its website Monday afternoon.
The direct trading program is not only expected to strengthen the financial cooperation between China and Singapore, but also to help the internationalization of RMB in southeast Asia and the world.
As the second largest economy, China has seen the RMB, or yuan, take on a bigger role in the international market. In late September, China allowed direct trading of the yuan against the Euro. Similar trading arrangements have also been made with the U.S. dollar, the Japanese yen, the Australian dollar, the British pound and New Zealand dollar.
Apart from financial cooperation, China and Singapore also agreed to strengthen partnership in sustainable development, culture and economic transformation. Both sides signed cooperation documents ranging from intellectual property rights and exchange programs between middle-to-senior officials in education and environmental protection.
Acknowledging(承认,认可)the great achievements of bilateral cooperation projects, namely the Suzhou Industrial Park and the Tianjin Eco-City, Chinese and Singaporean officials discussed future development of the industrial park and agreed to make the eco-city project a pilot program for China’ s green development.
The Suzhou Industrial Park and the Tianjin Eco-City are models in cooperation between China and Singapore. Singapore is willing to work with China to advance the two projects, Teo said.
As China and Singapore will celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2015, China is willing to strengthen strategic trust and cooperation with Singapore to give bilateral ties a bigger boost, Zhang said.

Nowadays, a cell phone service is available to everyone, everywhere. Probably thousands of people have already been using it, but I just discovered it, so I’m going to claim it and also name it: False Foning.
The technology has been working well for me at the office, but there are unlimited applications, actually in any public place.
Say you work at a big university with lots of talky workmates buzzing(发嗡嗡声)about. Now, say you need to use the restroom. The trip down the hall will take about one hour, because a person can’t walk into those talky people without getting pulled aside for a question, a bit of gossip(闲聊), a new read on a certain line of Paradise Lost.
So just pick a cell phone up. Don’t dial. Just hold that phone to your face and start talking. Walk confidently down the hall busy with false conversation, making sure that both the topic and content are well suited to the person standing before you whom you are trying to avoid.
For standard colleague avoidance, I suggest false chatting about false business: “Yes, I’m glad you called, because we really need to think the details over. What’s that? Yes, I read Page 12, but if you look at the bottom of 4, I think you can see the problem begins right there.”
Be busy with your false fone conversation. Make eye contact(接触)with the people passing, nod to them, gesture keen interest in talking to them at a later time, point to your phone, shrug(耸肩)and move on.
There was one important caution(being careful)about false foning. The other day I was false foning my way past a colleague, and he was actually following me to get my attention. I knew he wanted to ask about a project I had not yet finished. I was trying to buy myself some time, so I continued false foning with my doctor. “So I don’t need the operation? Oh, doctor, that is the best news.”
And then: Brrrrrrng! Brrrrrmg! Brrrrrmg! My phone started ringing, right there while it was planted on my face. My colleague looked at me, and I looked at him, and naturally I gasped(吸气). “What is the matter?” I said, pulling the phone away to look at it, and then putting it back to my ear.
“Hello? Are you still there?” Oops.
47. According to the passage False Foning is ___________.
A. a way to avoid people B. a tool newly produced
C. a service provided everywhere D. a skill of communication
48. What does the last example show?
A. One effective way is to false fone one’s doctor.
B. One has to be careful while false foning.
C. False foning may not cheat people.
D. False foning is always quite successful.
49. After his phone suddenly began ringing, the author_________.
A. immediately started talking to the caller
B. immediately started talking to his colleague
C. put the phone away and stopped talking
D. continued with his false conversation
50. What is the tone of the passage?
A. doubtful. B. humorous. C. serious. D. unclear.
第四部分:任务型阅读(每空一词。共10小题, 每小题1分, 满分10分)
How do you know if the perfect house you have found is in the perfect neighborhood? When driving by on a sunny Sunday afternoon, you cannot see the true nature of the area. All too often people will fall in love with a house without taking the nearby area into consideration. This can lead to serious problems and cause you to regret the decision to buy.
Before buying a house it is wise to do some research on the area it is located in. Do you know what the crime rate is for the area? How are the schools? What is the average age of your neighbors? Is there a “party house” next door?Does the quiet street turn into a busy shortcut during the rush hour?Is there a known drug house? These things should all be considered before a final decision is made.
Making several visits to the house at various times and on different days can help you know a lot about the area. Sit in front of the house with your windows rolled down and just listen to the activity, take a walk around the block and observe the sights, sounds, and smells. Be sure to go to judge how loud things can get on a weekend evening.
You will also need to find out if the neighborhood is improving or on the decline (下降). Are stores and services closing or have new businesses been opening up?These are things that will affect the resale value of your house. Also check with local governments to discover if any developments are planned for the area.
The best advice is not to let your heart rule your head. Do your homework, and make sure your dream house is in your dream neighborhood.

Recently I have joined in a discussion in our class about whether more MET opportunities should be provided each year. Of course, different people have different opinions on this issue. Some are in favor of this idea, while others express their worries about it.
Those who are for this idea think that more test opportunities each year meets the needs for MET reform. It allows students to have more chances and also helps reduce the stress of both parents and students.
Those who feel worried believe that more test opportunities each year will add too much of a burden to both students and teachers and make the competitions more fierce. Besides, it will be a waste of money, labor and other social resources.
As far as I am concerned, the more chances, the better. More test opportunities each year will improve the fairness of MET.
