Sounds in water

A watch with hands, not digital(数码的)
An alarm clock, not digital
Water
1. Fill the plastic bag with water and zip it up.

“He was hardly more than five feet, four inches (≈1. 63 m) tall, but carried himself with great dignity. His head was exactly the shape of an egg..”
With this description, Agatha Christie introduced Hercule Poirot in her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles. In the century since, the name Poirot has been familiar around the world. Back then, however, the retired Belgian policeman had just escaped from his war-torn homeland. After settling down in a sleepy English village, he was involved in the murder of a wealthy elderly lady.
Many cases Poirot took on were hard to solve. But as he often said, “The simplest explanation is always the most likely.” It just takes the little grey cells, a close eye for detail and a bit of self confidence. As Poirot found throughout his career, the most ordinary clues could prove to be the most important.
Murder seemed to follow Poirot wherever he went, from rural England to the River Nile. The detective did make mistakes, but he always got his man, woman or both. Poirot could be annoying sometimes—he was too proud of himself and believed he was simply smarter than others. However, he was one of the best-loved characters in the fiction. People liked him for his powerful understanding of human nature. The Belgian helped make Christie the world’s best-selling novelist.
But after writing 33 novels and 59 short stories starring Poirot, Christie herself became tired of the character. She killed him off in a novel written during World War II but not published until 1975. The New York Times then gave him a front-page obituary. Today, lots of people around the world still like Poirot. Many of his stories have been made into films. And Sophie Hannah, a British novelist, has tried to bring Poirot back to life in a series of new stories.

Eat a rainbow of colours often. as dietitians(营养学家) are fond of saying—and with good reason. Eating all kinds of colourful food provides vitamins and minerals (矿物质) that can’t be replaced with supplements to keep your body healthy.
Whole Foods, a food company in the United States, examined buyers’ behaviour globally across 465 stores. According to experts from the company, our plates look very colourful this year, with purple foods particularly in fashion. This is indeed the case. Walk through any supermarket and you will find richly-coloured purple foods are showing up on the shelves: purple cauliflower, black rice, blueberries, blackberries, purple sweet potatoes and purple cabbage.
The increasing popularity of purple food in the market is unsurprising, showing how attentive people are becoming to health in recent years. People have long known that the darker the colour of a food is, the higher antioxidants(抗氧化剂) and nutrients it will have. In fact, people were encouraged to eat more purple foods after a study found that those who ate purple fruits and vegetables regularly often had low cholesterol (胆固醇) and a reduced risk of getting high blood pressure.
Research shows that these foods get their purple colour from anthocyanins. They have been linked with antioxidants and anti-aging special qualities in the body. Purple foods help improve bone health, and have also been shown to lower the risk of some cancers and improve memory. Take purple sweet potatoes for example. While the standard sweet potato is packed with health benefits of its own, the purple sweet potato is even better for us. These brightly-coloured sweet potatoes share the same taste as their orange siblings, but are also filled with anthocyanins. Therefore, purple sweet potatoes help with digestion (消化) and have anti-inflammatory (抗炎的) special qualities.
Nutrition adviser Matthew Plowman agrees that purple foods are full of natural health benefits. “The benefits of antioxidants have long been discussed. They are also known to fight disease, keep you looking younger and are good for your heart—so, why wouldn’t you eat them?”

Always believe in yourself no matter what happens to you and love the person that you are. These are laws of life that are useful to everyone. I think that before people can live happy lives, they must believe in and accept themselves.
The hardest thing for you to do is look in the mirror and like what you see, and then accept yourself, being thankful, And believe you can finish anything you try to do. To live a comfortable life, you must start with believing in yourself.
I have struggled with believing in myself so many times in my life. Struggling with little tasks such as completing homework or memorizing a piece on the piano, I would get so upset. But you never realize how much easier your life will become if you don’t have confidence before you take on a task until you say, “I can do this!”
Four or five years ago, I began taking piano lessons. One day, recital time was coming near, but I had a piece that I couldn’t completely memorize. Coming home with a feeling of sadness, I just considered I could not achieve this task. I sat at my piano and told myself that I would never get it finished. But on second thought, I could memorize it, So, I tried my best to play and play. Finally, I did end up finishing the piece, and the recital was able to wend smoothly. The important point is that looking back on this time in my life, I can see how important it is to believe that I can complete anything I want to do if I try my best.
Now, when I become upset with a piano piece, I never give up or think that I cannot do it. Always beginning with confidence, I sit down and tell myself that I can achieve my goal if I put my mind into it. I realize that I should have this mind in everything I do.
So, dear friends, never give up and believe that you can complete anything if you set your mind and heart on it.

Research suggests that our level of happiness depends partly on something we cannot control—our genes (基因) and our life conditions. But our level of happiness is also shaped by the choices we make. If we’ve been chasing wealth, fame, good looks, material things and power, we may be looking for happiness in all the wrong places. Scientists suggest that the following six habits make people happier.
People who form close relationships are likely to be happier than those who do not. The number of friends we have is not important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships that bring happiness usually include the sharing of feelings, respect, acceptance, trust and fun.
People who make a habit of caring for others’ health may be happier. This usually includes volunteering for an organization or reaching out to friends and family.
People who exercise usually improve both their physical and mental(精神上的) health. Some research has shown that exercise can be as useful as medicine.
When we are so interested in an activity that we seem to forget the time, we are in a state of flow (“心流”状态). The activity could be making art, playing the piano, surfing, or playing a game. People who experience a flow in their work or hobbies will be happier.
People are more likely to be happy if they know what their skills are and usually use them. People who set goals and use their skills to achieve them can be happier. People are especially happy when they can use their skills to serve the greater good.
People who think positively by being thankful, caring and optimistic (乐观的) are more likely to be happier.

Celebrating your birthday in space would be very different from what you might do on the earth. For example, your birthday cake would be floating in front of you. The candles could not be lit because astronauts must be very careful not to start a fire aboard the shuttle. Your friends could still sing Happy Birthday to You. Voices are almost the only things that are not changed by being weightless which means that everything has almost no weight in space. This is because there is very little gravity in space.
Some astronauts feel sick for the first few days in space. This feeling usually goes away. Some astronauts feel as if they had a cold all the time. That s because without gravity the fluids in their bodies move toward their heads, Astronauts look a little different in space. More blood flows to the face, so their faces look a little fatter. For the same reason, their waists get smaller and their chests get bigger.
Astronauts grow one or two inches in space. That’s because gravity is not pressing on the spine. The spine relaxes and stretches. Back on the earth, astronauts shrink to their regular height. In space, bones and muscles get weaker. That’s because muscles are not used as much and the bones lose minerals, such as calcium. Besides, the heart becomes a little weaker.
Since nothing has weight, astronauts can lift heavy objects easily. They can even lift each other! However, it is harder to stay still in space than to move around. The only way to stop moving is to hold onto something. The space shuttle has handholds and foot loops. The astronauts can also tie themselves to a chair or a wall. There are pieces of Velcro to stick things in order to keep them from floating around.
根据短文内容, 回答下列问题。每题答案不超过7个词。
1. What CAN’T be done if you celebrate your birthday in the shuttle?
2. How do some astronauts feel for the first few days in space?
3. Why do astronauts’ faces look fatter in space?
4. Which part(s) of an astronaut’s body may grow weaker in space?
5. How can astronauts stay still in space?
