As a volunteer teacher, I traveled a long way to a small village school in Longzhou, Guangxi. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school, and the children there. However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It wasn’t what I expected. It didn’t look like a school at all! The school had only three rooms, one for Grades 1, 2 and 3, and another one for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me.

The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories about myself and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level. To my surprise, though the test was very easy, over half of the students failed it, yet they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me.

  I was busy preparing lessons, reading test papers every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hardworking children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their lives better, and we are now good friends.

Computer programmer David Jones makes 35,000 pounds a year designing new computer games, yet he cannot find a bank which can let him have a credit card. Instead, he has been told to wait for another two years, until he is 18. The 16-year-old works for a small company in Liverpool, where the problem of most young people of his age is finding a job. David’s company releases(推出) two new games for the fast growing computer market each month.

In 1995, Oseola McCarty gave a present of $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi. She wanted to help poor students. She said, “I’m too old to get an education, but they can.” Her friends and neighbors were all surprised. Oseola McCarty was a good woman. She went to church. She was always friendly and helpful. But everyone in her town knew that Oseola McCarty was not rich. In fact, she was poor.

   Oseola never married or had children. Her life was very simple. She went to work and to church. She read her Bible. She had a black and white television. But she didn’t watch it very much. It had only one channel.

   Oseola McCarty saved money all her life and finally had about $250,000. When she was 86, a lawyer helped her make a will. She left her money to the church, her cousins, and the university. Oseola just wanted to help others. She didn’t think she was a special person. But then people found out about her present to the university. She received many honors(荣誉). She even flew in an airplane for the first time! Oseola McCarty died in 1999. She was a shy and ordinary woman who became famous.
