The Chinese government finally ended its one-child policy and let families have two children instead.

The policy was announced (宣布）at the end of last year in Beijing. A number of reasons for the change in policy were-given by a government statement. The statement said the change was meant to balance the population development, stop the felling birth rate (出生率）and increase the country’ s work force (劳动力).

China, with the largest population, in the world, started the one-child policy in 1980. Meanwhile, the government allowed a small number of couples to have two children. For example, some families in the countryside could have two children if the first-born child was a girl. In 2013, the Chinese government gave other couples a chance to have two children if one of them was an only child.

Jiang Quanbao, a teacher, explained the Chinese families’ opinion about the policy. “Too many young people in the cities are no longer interested in having a second child,” he said. “People in the countryside are more interested. But some of them are already allowed to have two children.”

By the end of 2014, China had a population of  billion. A total of 800 million of them had jobs. But the working population will go down in 34 years. That is to say, the country will be in great need of work force at that time. With the two-child policy, an increase in births can solve this problem.

In Britain, Boxing Day is usually celebrated on the following day after Christmas Day. Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it’s a non-working day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the following Monday is the public holiday.

The exact origin of the holiday is unclear. One of the thoughts is that during the Middle Ages, when great sailing ships were setting off to discover new land, a Christmas Box was placed by a priest (牧师）on each ship. Those sailors (水手）who wanted to ensure a safe return would drop money into the box. It was sealed up (封存) and kept on board until the ship came home safely. Then the box was handed over to the priest in the exchange for the saying of a Mass of thanks for the success of the sailing. The priest wouldn’t open it to share the contents with the poor until Christmas.

One more thought is about the “Alms Box” placed in every church on Christmas Day. Worshipers (做礼拜的人）put gifts for the poor into it. These boxes were always opened the day after Christmas. That is why that day became known as Boxing Day.

I haven t been watching TV for a long time since about  mean watching shows on TV. I still catch my favorite shows off DVDs or online. There are many reasons why I don’t watch TV, and I’ll share my two biggest reasons with you.
