Passage 1
Cars are an important part of life in the United States. Without a car most people feel that they are poor. And even if a person is poor he doesn’t feel really poor when he has a car.
Henry Ford was the man who first started making cars in large numbers. He probably didn’t know how much the car was going to affect American culture. The car made the United States a nation on wheels. And it helped make the United States what it is today.
There are three main reasons the car became so popular in the United States. First of all the country is a huge one and Americans like to move around in it. The car provides the most comfortable and cheapest form of transportation. With a car people can go anyplace without spending a lot of money.
The second reason cars are popular is the fact that the United States never really developed an efficient and inexpensive form of public transportation. Long-distance trains have never been as common in the United States as they are in other parts of the world. Nowadays there is a good system of air-service provided by planes. But it is too expensive to be used frequently.
The third reason is the most important one, though. The American spirit of independence is what really made cars popular. Americans don’t like to wait for a bus, or a train or even a plane. They don’t like to have to follow an exact schedule. A car gives them the freedom to schedule their own time. And this is the freedom that Americans want most to have.
The gas shortage has caused a big problem for Americans. But the answer will not be a bigger system of public transportation. The real solution will have to be a kind of car, one that does not use so much gas.
1._______ is the most important reason the car became so popular in the United States.

Passage 2
A headache is one of man’s most common enemies. Most people get headaches from time to time. What causes headaches and what can we do about them?
Tension headaches.
Probably more than 90% of all headaches are caused by worry or tension. Modern living produces tensions for everybody, at work, at school and at home. What can we do about tension and worry in our life.? First, find what is causing the tension. It may be caused by feelings or emotions. Do you worry too much over what people think of you, over your clothes, or about what you did or didn’t say? Are you on good terms with your employer, neighbour, best friend, school friend or family? If not, why not? Next, find a way of reducing tensions. Gardening, walking, running, swimming or any activity suitable for your age will help reduce tension. Then look at your way of life. Ask yourself, where am I going? And why? Learn the secret of relaxation. Lie down in a dark quiet room and relax as much as possible by taking several slow breaths. Let all your muscles relax.
Headaches caused by habit.
Habits of daily living also produce headaches. These include lack of exercise, especially sitting for hours watching TV or studying, lack of fresh air, lack of sleep and eating too much. Get in the habit of balanced living; plenty of sleep, regular exercise, regular meals, good food, fresh air and avoid harmful things such as heavy smoking, alcohol and very strong coffee. A headache can be the body’s reaction against things such as these.

Passage 3
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone in 1876. But the story behind his invention of the telephone begins before 1876.
Bell first worked for his father. He taught the deaf to speak by using his father’s system of “visible speech”. From this early experience with the study of sound, Bell became interested in the telegraph, a device which sends sounds by an electric current. During one experiment with his assistant, Thomas A. Watson, Bell was adjusting the tone of the telegraph’s steel spring. He heard other sounds coming through the spring. This discovery showed him how the current could transmit the vibrations of a person’s voice.
On March 19,1876, Bell and Watson were working in separate rooms. Bell spilled some acid on his clothes by accident and said,”Mr.Watson, come here. I need you!” Watson heard the message through the telephone spring and came immediately. This was the first complete sentence trnasmitted over the telephone.
Within a year the new device was greatly improved. On April 3, 1877, Bell completed the first telephone conversation between Boston and New York, a distance of more than two hundred miles.
Now people almost everywhere in the world can speak to each other by telephone. A special telephone can aslo transmit a picture of the speaker as well as the voice. This device lets deaf persons use the telephone. By lip reading, or watching the movements of the epeaker’s lips, a deaf person can actually see what the person at the other telephone is saying.

Passage 4
Cathy and Wayne are in their late 20’s, have been married frve years, and are childless. The last time a member of Cathy’s family asked, “ When are you going to start a family?” her answer was, “We are a family!”
Cathy and Wayne belong to a grwing number of young married couples who are deciding not to have children. A recent survey showed that in the last five years the percentage of wives aged 25 to 29 who did not want children had almost doubled. What lies behind this decision which seems to fly in the face of biology and society?
Perhaps the most publicly outspoken childless couple are Ellen Peck and her husband William. They are not against parenthood but against the social pressures that push people into parenthood whether it is what they really want or not.
“ It’s a life-style choice,” Ellen says. “ We chose freedom and spontaneity, privacy and leisure. It’s also a question of where you want to give your efforts--- whithin your own family or in the larger community. This generation faces serious questions about the continuity of life on earth as well as its quality. Our grandchildren may have to buy tickets to see the last redwoods or line up to get their oxygen ration. There are men who complain about being caught in a traffic jam for hours on their way home to their five kids but can’t make the association between the children and the traffic jam. In a world seriously threatened by the consequences of overpopulation we are concerned with making life without children acceptable and respectable. Too many children are born as a result of cultural pressure. And the results show up in the statistics on divorce and child-abuse.”

Part III E-C Translation:
Through all of our history we have pondered the stars and mused whether humanity is unique or if, somewhee else in the dark of the night sky, there are other beings who contemplate and wonder as we do, fellow thinkers in the cosmos. Such beings might view themselves and the universe differently. Somewhere else there might be very exotic biologies and technologies and societies. In a cosmic setting vast and old beyond ordinary human understanding, we are a little lonely; and we ponder the ultimate significance, if any, of our tiny but exquisite blue planet.
