The difference of family education between China a

Abstract: Family education is a cultural phenomenon, different countries and different areas have different family education. The methods and contents of family education is still an open problem. This paper focus on the study of analyzing the different family education between China and America mainly on the aspects of family education’s methods, contents and results. Based on the comparison, the paper ends with the suggestion that Chinese family education should attach great importance to children’s all-round development.

1 Introduction

About three years ago, a mother of Chinese heritage alleged: “a strict Chinese mother is better than an American mother”. This aroused a great discussion among the American people.

After the original shock and indignation, American people began to rethink profoundly. Some of them thought the discussion caused by the Chinese Tiger Mother was reached the height of the Soviet Union putting the first artificial satellite in orbit around the earth before America which was regarded as a salutary shock to an America grown complacent.

As time goes by, the Chinese Tiger Mother was gradually forgotten by people, but the influence is still lasting and there are many domestics and foreign scholars insisting on the study of family education.

Family is everyone’s harbour of soul, is the place where we grow up, study and live. Family education plays the essential and the most important role in shaping one’s character and quality. Family education is the basis of school education and have a great influence on cultivating a good habit and developing physical and psychological health. Though, family education has presented a long time, “in the Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties, the first series of family education monographs appeared” (Wang Jing, 2011). China is a country with a long history. In ancient China, many famous and moving stories about parents teaching children has been spread for many years, for example:” moving three evictions, optional neighbouring states” and “tattooing yue fei”. But there is still not having a definite definition.

Since China implemented the policy of reform and opening-up in 1978, Chinese economy has been rapid development and China has surpassed Japan as the second largest economy in the world in 2010. At the same time, the college entrance exam was resumed in 1977, which has cultivated lots of brilliant people for the development of China. However, Chinese family education has exposed many problems. Many scholars try to solve the emerged problems by analyzing and comparing the family education of developed countries.

2 The objectives of family education

Some people hold family education is much more important than the education in school since the majority of schools seem to only pay attention to educating theoretical knowledge to students, which ignore the development of character, behaviour, qualities and interests on children. On the contrary, parents educate children with several objectives: a) Generally speaking, parents are impacting most on children’s character. The surroundings that children have decides whether he is extroversion or introversion. So most of the parents are willing to show their kids the good sides of them in order to help children form a healthy character; b) Developing a good habit and behaviour from an early age is helpful on the rest of life, for instance: how to make their time more reasonable and how to finish their work effectively; c) Being willing to help others, having a sense of social responsibility, having a caring heart and knowing self-love are all the excellent qualities which all parents hope their children possess; d) Discover children’s talents and work hard to develop their talents which is a quick way to success that parents paved for them. 

As the several points above, it is not only the aims of family education but also the same points of family education between different culture and different countries, such as China and America.

3 The differences between Chinese and American family education

3.1 The differences between family education methods

Different education objectives lead to different education methods between Chinese and American parents while the education restricted by traditions, customs and history backgrounds.

America advocates democracy and freedom. Most of American parents teach their children by the way of democracy. Parents respect them and regard each one as an equal and independent individual. Children have the rights of participation and vote when an important family event happened. They are encouraged to value their opinions and need not always obey their parents. Parents respect the opinions that they once made. They can choose any sports that they like, including basketball, football and swimming; they can choose their favorite book like J.K.Rowling’s Harry Potter series or Shakespeare’s four famous tragedies; they can choose their own friends no matter whether their parents like or dislike and no matter whether their friend is a good person or a bad person. What their father and mother need to do is to evaluate whether their choice is reasonable or practicable and teach them how to use their eyes and wisdom to judge. Eventually, leading them to make a cautious and proper choice. American parents hold that everything happened in the daily life should be accomplished by children and each chance that they meet should be seized and chosen by themselves. In this case, it is conductive to improving children’s competence of independent judgment and analysis. Furthermore, it can increase their living experience and confidence.

However, Chinese people seem to believe that parents are elders of children; children are expected to respect their parents, obey their parents and honor their parents, which is considered to be influenced by Chinese traditional culture. In Chinese long history, the Confucian culture is regarded as the three cardinal guides and the five constant virtues as the standard of people’s moral behavior. The traditional culture takes it for granted that children follow their parents’ arrangements. Parents usually help them make the decision. For an instance: help them select their hobbies, targets, occupation and even spouse. Since coming into 21th century, the phenomenon has weakened a lot, but it still exists in some areas of the country. In Chinese primary school and middle school, the circumstance that teacher hits students who violated the school’s discipline is universal. It is also happened in Chinese ordinary family. Some people think hitting children is a kind of useful method of educating children. It is possibly valid that children may have an  impression on the lesson of being hit and they would never repeat the fault. But in America, parents never hit children, even though there are some mistakes that they have made.

Therefore, there is a generation gap between Chinese children and parents. Children are not willing to tell their thoughts to parents. And similarly, parents do not want to share thoughts with children. When it is necessary for the family to make a vital decision, children are not allowed to express any opinions. They are just told the final decisions. The final consequence is to get the distance of the two generations longer and longer and make the relationship became more and more intense.

3.2 The differences between family education contents 

     American family education has a variety of contents and forms. Parents do not put study on the first. But put a high value on children’s mental and physical developments. Parents emphasize outdoor exercise and encourage children to take part in physical exercise, so that they can have a strong physical; parents also develop their cognitive abilities and take them to the library to broaden their horizons and discover the aspects that they are interested in. In addition, it is a good way to increase children’s social experience and sense of responsibility by doing part-time jobs in their spare time. Some parents also require them to take part in all types of economic activities. For examples, let them make money to pay tuition on this basis, children learned how to make money, how to spend money and how to manage money efficiently.

      “In America, many educators do not hold that students ought to memorize what they do not understand an early age. After school, Chinese parents tend to ask their children: ‘What did you learn at school?’ or ‘What scores have you got today?’ However, American students are usually asked ‘Have you raise any question today?’ or ‘How do you like the classes today?’ These are the different understandings of intelligence by parents of the two countries.”(Min Zhengwei, 2008)

      On the contrary, Chinese government pays attention to the over-all development of children’s moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic and labor education with the intention of developing the talent of comprehensive qualities. But the actual situation is disappointing: school education merely pay attention to the intellectual education. At the same time, family education usually focus on moral quality and intelligence. More and more parents think that possessing a particular competence can help children be admitted into a famous university and it is superior to others. For this reason, apart from taking the compulsory lessons, children who have a better economic environment have to take some amateur classes including painting, music, instrument and dance. Under this occasion, children do not have another free time to take a part-time job like American children. However, parents are seemingly absent-minded and take it not into consideration. They have their opinion: they do not want their children to do any tiring work because they have been tired too enough to let their children suffer. So, a great number of Chinese parents try their endeavors to satisfy children’s economic requirements. The more children depend on parents in economy, the weaker they will be in life. Lacking the awareness of social responsibility is a common issue on Chinese children. Only after they graduated from university can they realize the social responsibility and the obligation.

3.3 The differences between family education results

     Different objectives, contents and methods lead to different results.

     On the one hand, American children are active, independent, strong, decisive. When an emergency happened, most of them can cope with calmly. It takes them a short time to accommodate a new environment. “Let’s look at the each stage of America children in the growth: When they are infants, they sleep themselves; when they can walk, they play by themselves; and when they grew older they have their own rooms and they decorate and clean them all by themselves. They do paid work within their reach when they are young, such as cleaning, taking care of babies and delivering newspaper, etc; when they are in high school and university, they are on work-study programs and support themselves.”( Brehm Sharon, 2002).But precisely because they are too free, there are many social problems. It is obvious that American children lack of the awareness of raising their old parents. While Chinese children respect their parents very much. When their parents become old, they want to give their parents an easy and comfortable life.

     However, even though Chinese children are studying harder and having a better grade than American children. But they lack the competence of living alone. “Chinese children usually are not good at communicating with others. They have poorly independent living abilities and they are short of the sense of standing on their own feet and abilities of adapting to the society. ” (Peng Xiaoyang, 2012). “They show a negative tendency in their characters: passive, timid, dependent. In a word, they lack the ability to adapt themselves to new surroundings. Such personalities are closely related with the degree-oriented society.”(Wang Jing, 2011).

4 Conclusion 

      The family education between China and America have the similarities and the differences. Both have the merits and demerits. Given that every child grows up under the education of his father and mother, how the person will be in the future depends on the family education they receive. The character, behaviour, quality and hobby are tightly related to family education. It is the most important point that Chinese parents should change the attitude toward children. And try to treat children in an equal and respectful way; give the free space to them; promote their over-all development. At the same time, American parents are able to get what they lack from Chinese family education.
