Topic: Are young people in China today more self-centered and unsympathetic than previous generations or not?
Title: Post-90 Generation, the Rise of Civic Awareness
We have a tendency to assume that our own generation is the best among all others. We either think the previous generations are too stubborn or the younger generations too arrogant. With more and more post-90s entering into the society, this young generation has shown their seniors in various events about just how concerned they are about their family, and everyone else around them.
People seldom make judgments without prejudice. However, if one person is aware that his or her judgment is biased, and has the courage to examine this judgment objectively, it is easier for this individual to get one step closer to the truth. Similarly, the post-90 generation in China has been facing numerous charges against their shortages, yet the public opinion refuse to admit one simple fact that, it is not the young generation’s choose of will to become the sole child in their families. They did not choose to be deprived off their birthright to have blood brothers and sisters, and they are the victims of elder generations’ ignorance and arrogance.
It is true that post-90s shows limited concern about others, and it is true that this generation is far less endurable to harsh conditions. However, we must aware that interfere doesn’t mean care, and living in high standards has always been the primary motive for our country to rapidly develop its economy. It is quite amusing that after all the hard work we have done, we accuse our children for benefiting from our achievements.
Today, post-90 generations are soldiers, Olympic champions, volunteers and college students. They defend our country and protect the people, whom by the way have been criticizing them for decades, from natural disasters; they honor their country in sports events around the globe by admirable struggle and winnings; they devote themselves to the aid of the weak; they speak boldly hoping for the best of our country. With all the signs, we have no reason to doubt that our young generation has grown up and is willing to take up their rights as well as responsibilities as citizens like no generation before. While the young generation starts to play a role in the society, when they begin to speak and have the ability to act, the public is beginning to see, from defeating natural disasters to protesting against government inaction, that there is something long missing in Chinese people which shine right among these young adults. The booming economy and their identity as the sole child gives them resources unimaginable to their fathers, and with these resources, this generation received the best education ever in China, and have the most freedom to think and to speak. They have more time to observe and learn, and have more access to information, and are in possession of knowledge (especially in the Internet) to break the barrier that meant to restrict their speech, and make the people think about the truth beyond official statements, and to judge by their own.
It is true that this young generation has many shortages need overcome, but it is so only because they are still young and are relatively less-experienced. Post-90s are self-concerned but they are more concerned about rights of the individual and the people, and along with them, bring the rise of civic awareness that has long been suppressed by collectivism.
