my understanding of nettles

The meaning of life is always topics and fountains of literature. The author, instead of promoting some dry and boring life philosophy, employs slices of life to show our shared confusion, passion and pains, and then leads us to our own understanding of life.

The title “nettles” bears rich meanings. Literally, it is an unremarkable wild plant with hairs on its leaves that sting. When walking through the weeds of life, besides enjoying the picturesque landscape we are destined to be disturbed by the plant—troubles, frustration and failed expectancy. This is the true feature of life.

It also holds a connotation of “the potential risk or cost resulting from transgressing the bound of moral principles”. In this story, the female protagonist is experiencing a mid-life crisis. For this educated woman, what marriage brings to her is the loss of her freedom and identity. She fails to keep a good relationship with her husband and children. Suddenly, the reunion with her old friend thrills her vacant body and soul, driving her to develop a closer relationship or love affair with him. However, the family, a big obstacle, is lying between them. When the deep secret of Mike is revealed after a wild storm, she has the idea of committing an infidelity on her conscience, and gives up the irrational thought which may pay a heavy cost—calling forth a lot of abuse and criticism from the society. 

What’s more, the woman’s mistaking the joe-pye weeds for nettles indicates her confused feelings towards Mike. Like the pinkish purple flowers of the joe-pye weeds, her childhood memory for Mike is warm, sweet and tender. Mike’s appearance brings a glimmer of hope for this gloomy person. However, she doesn’t realize that everything has changed with the passage of time. The man has hit rock bottom and is tightly bound with his wife. For him, she is just a reliable friend. The revelation of the painful accident shows his trust and sincerity on her, as well as his indirect refusal and determination. Throughout the story, the author tries to create a pseudo impression that something will happen between these two, but the result lets us down a little. Finally, her reason triumphs over the subtle feeling and the desire. Let the love be kept a secret forever and grow naturally and gently, instead of being stubborn about the consequence. Love itself is a treasure, not to be used, but to be appreciated and enjoyed. Enveloping the beautiful feeling at the bottom of the heart is the properest way to cherish it. 

     The story tells about the complexity of life, a spider web of interconnected everyday problems—family, love, friendship and marriage. How to get along with your spouse and children? How to keep intimate with your friends physically and mentally? How to treat the love when it comes untimely？All these are what everyone should experience. If we fail to handle them appropriately, the “nettles” in the life will more than pierce your skin.
