The Nightingale and the Rose is a rich philosophic novella written by Wilde, who was a well-known writer, dramatist, and poet in England. Born in Berlin, Germany and graduated in Oxford University, Wilde was honored as the most gifted dramatist in 19 century. During his lifetime, he produced many famous works. He was known as an adult writer, but he achieved great achievement in fairy tale works. Though he passed away when he was only 46 years old, he experienced great ups and downs owning to special historical perspective in his short life.
The Nightingale and the Rose is a representative work of Victorian literature. It is a fairy tale that he produced for his children. The publication date is still unknown.
The novella mainly related a fairy tale among Nightingale, the young man, the red rose and the girl. A young college student fell in love with the daughter of a professor in the university. The girl promised that if he could send a red rose to her, she would dance with him. Unfortunately, there was no red rose in his garden. The student wept desperately in the ice and snow. His sorrow and hopeless touched a little Nightingale. She understood the secret of the student’s sorrow. She thought about the mystery of love. The kind-hearted Nightingale soared into the air and passed through the grove. She found several rose trees and begged for a red rose. Finally, she did get a booming red rose at the expense of her own life. She built it out of music by moonlight. The little Nightingale gave one last burst of music when the red rose is booming. At last, she was lying dead in the long grass, with the thorn in her heart. Then when the young student woke up the next morning, he was surprised by the beautiful red rose in front of him. Plucking it and running to the girl’s house with it, the boy give the red rose to the girl. However, he got nothing but the girl’s rejection and insult. The young student was disappointed and went back to philosophy and study metaphysics. The beautiful red rose which was changed with the little Nightingale’s life was thrown to the ground.
The Nightingale and the red Rose told about a romantic loving story that full of tragic feature. The whole novel centered on the Nightingale’s humanistic physiological activity, her confirmed belief and her efforts to true love. It made good use of symbolization to express the real meaning.
The little Nightingale symbolized sacrifice. She sacrificed her own life to fulfill the young student’s dream. Just as she said” Death is a great price to pay for a red rose.” In her heart, love was full of mysterious feathers and there’s pure love in the world. She was touched by the young student’s severe and his pure love to the girl. It’s miserable that her sacrifice hadn’t returned. At last, only the grove, the cloud and the rose tree wept for her. The rose symbolized the true love. In the novel, the young student dreamt of his true love, the girl. While until the last did he found that the girl doesn’t love him. The young student represented a youth who dreamt of love and be loved. However, he didn’t know the real meaning of true love. He fell in love with the girl, while he pursued nothing but in a state of sorrow and desperation. At first, he believed that there’s true love in the world. But in the end, he lost confident in love.
As far as I am concerned, the story reflects two themes. One is sacrifice. Another is true love. There is an important association between sacrifice and true love. The Nightingale sacrificed herself to build the red rose, the true love. However, at the end of the story, the young student lost confident in true love. In his heart, thought that the true love was unpractical, unreal and silly. Just as he said “It’s not half as useful as logic, for it doesn’t prove anything, and it’s always telling one of things that are not going to happen, and making one believe things that are not true.” In my opinion, love does exist in the world as long as we persist in and make efforts to love. Love and be loved are both senses of happiness. What we should do is reserving love in our heart and never give up to love others.
