How to Make a Formal Cover Page

The purpose of a formal cover page, also known as a title page, is simply to provide readers with the most basic information about your paper. The cover page can vary slightly depending on the writing style you choose. The two major writing styles are Modern Language Association (MLA) and American Psychological Association (APA). In MLA format, you only need a title page when specifically asked for one. In APA format, you provide a little more information about your paper on the cover page, and you always include it.

MLA

∙1 

Align your text cursor in the center.

Enter your title about one-third down the page.

∙3 

Hit the “Enter” key twice.

∙4 

Type “by” and hit the “Enter” key again.

∙5 

Type your full name.

∙6 

Type out the name of the class about two-thirds down the page and press "Enter."

Type the instructor's name and press "Enter."

Enter the date.

APA

∙1 

Enter your page header. This consists of a short version of the title, taking the first one or two words, and a page number. Your word-processing program should have a header feature built in so you don’t have to write it on every page.

Align your text cursor to the left.

Type “Running head:" and enter an abbreviated version of your title in all capital letters. The running head should not be longer than 50 characters.

Align your text cursor to the center, and set it halfway down the page.

Enter your title and press "Enter."

Type in your byline and hit "Enter."
