Have you heard of the 10 attractive city voted by CCTV10?

……

You may have guessed out, that’s all about my hometown-----Rizhao.

First of all, let me give you a brief introduction of my hometown. Rizhao is a small costal city located in the southeast of Shandong Province. It covers 5310 square kilometer and the population is about 2,800,000. In the past 10 years, Rizhao has been developping rapidly, especially in the field of tourism. Depending on favourable geografical position, a small amount of big industry, Rizhao is famous for its clean environment, beautiful sea and temperate climate. The name “Rizhao” derives from the meaning that the sun shines and blesses our city. In Octorber, 2009,Rizhao was awarded “The World Habitat Award”,an honour awarded to only three cities in the world in a year.From now on,follow me and feel the fascination of my hometown. By the way,I will use four colours to show you a colourful city by the sea.

You may have seen the sea many times in different places,but the sea in my hometown is really unmatched. The sea water is so pure and clean that you can see all kinds of shell under water. Contrary to the sea of Qingdao,there is no entermorpha(浒苔) or any other alga plants(藻类植物) on the surface of the sea. The continental shelf,which is gentle and smooth, makes our sea a ideal place to swim. As a result, there are tens of thousands people swimming in the sea in summer. In July and August, the sea becomes a lively and happy heaven-----the tender wind,waves washing the sandy shores, laughters of children and adults, happily singing seagulls, colourfull hydrogen ballons with excited tourists in it in the purely blue sky……

Besides its attractive appearance,the sea in my heart has a more profound signification.It’s a holy old man who has witnessed thousands of years’ change in the earth.My father often drives me to the seaside,appreciating the extensive sea surface and listening to the waves.He was convinced that a man who understands the wisdom of the sea better must comprehend the true meaning of life better. And I tend to learn the spirit of tolerence and endurance from it.

Except we individuals,the local government as well takes the sea seriously. Our government has spared no effort to make full use of the present given by God. Rizhao successfully held the 2004 European Sailing Championship and all kinds of domestic sailing competitions.The area near the sea is constructed to a huge square called “Wanpingkou Square”(万平口广场). Facilities such as  fountains, colourful lights and recreational equipments are built to make the square pretty. You can see lots of citizens walking along the square appreciating the sea after dinner.

Another aspect relating to the sea closely is the seafood.Rizhao is famous for many seafoods:surf clam shell（西施舌）,shrimp,crab,jellyfish(海蜇),saury(刀鱼)，and many kinds of delicious fishes that are unique in Rizhao.The surf clam shell is Rizhao’s special local product,whose shell is pink in some part. It was chosen to be sent to the emperor of Qing Dynasty and he spoke highly of it.Every morning along the seaside,fishermen and buyers bargain with each other,at the same time,fishes just caught from the sea jump on the shipboard.Then,the fishes are sent to various restaurants and markets.

Many families near the sea build a project called “happy fishy”(渔家乐)，in which tourists can cash fishes by themselves with local fishmen,live in the families and eat all kinds of fresh seafoods.The project is quite popular at present and a number of people nationwide come to have a kind of this experience.

That’s about the sea of Rizhao,which is most famous in my hometown.

Golden-----the comfortable sandbeach

Referring to the sea of Rizhao,we mustn’t ignore the golden sandbeach,thanks to which Rizhao is called “ Hawaii of the east”.The sandbeach in Rizhao is praised by people from all over the world because it is unprecedentedly soft,golden,smooth,comfortable,fine and tender. There are no rough stones but many small smooth cobblestone among the sands. You must lose your heart to the sand by standing on the sand barefoot and letting the gentle waves patting your foot.

I like the sand from my deepest heart and there are many unforgettable memories among us. Just the day my college entrance examination finished,my father told me that my grandpa passed away about half a month ago.In order not to influence my mood, they decided to conceal the news untill the exam ended.I felt it was a lightning bolt at the moment . Crying sadly, I ran out of my home and went to the seaside. I sat on the sand and couldn’t stop sobbing especially when I though of not keeping my dear grandpa’s accompany at the last moment in his life. My grandparents live in a country near the sea and they had taken me to the seaside to play when I was young. At that time, I played the sand with small shovel and bucket in great delight. Recalling this I grabbed a handful of sand and let the sea water softly took it back to the sea. I tried laying on the beach and covered my arms and legs with the sand just like I was a child. I built a small castle on the beach with sand and named it “grandpa’s castle” because I had promised to buy a big house for them when I grew up……Later in my life, I gradually understand that some people we love deeply will leave us someday eventually like the sand taken away by sprays. But the beautifull recallings about them will never fade away and memories are the most valuable in our lives.

Having enjoying the sea,let’s walk into Zhudongtian(竹洞天)------the biggest bamboo forest in the north of China and The Costal Forest Park(海滨森林公园)-------an ecological park of the biggest side in Shandong Province. They represent the colour of green in Rizhao.

 The bamboos in Zhudongtiann have been growing silently for more than 50 years without attention untill 10 years ago when our government determined to make it a beauty spot. Walking along the wandering stone path surrounded by plenty of bamboos, hearing the sound when the refreshing breeze goes through the leaves, your eyes will be covered by green and you feel you are at the heart of the nature. Just let go of yourself and enjoy the beauty as much as you can. I even want to recommend our bamboo park to director Zhang Yimou, who may choose Rizhao to shoot another film like 《十面埋伏》. Apart from feeling the peacefull circumstance, you can also watch performances acted by people from national minorities, such as the Dai nationality, the Bai nationality, etc. On account of the bamboo, a panda called Yang Yang came to Zhudongtian in 2004,which was a hit at that time.

The Forest Park(森林公园) is also a perfect place to be close to the nature. It’s so huge that I still look forward to visiting some other parts of it in spite of having been there three times. Not only are there many kinds of trees and bushes that are extinct, there are also some rare and extremely beautiful birds living there.

Many people fall in love with the park when they slowly walk along the boulevard,seeing leaves falling elegantly in autumn. Many lovers specially come here to walk together hand in hand, hoping to be lovers forever. Does the romantic scene in the Korea teleplay (冬日恋歌) emerge in your mind? I always think of that spot when coming to the park. Also, if you live in a hotel here, you will be woken up by the birds’ songs and you have an opportunity to watch the amazing sunrise.

In reality, the whole city can be called city of green as the greening rate reaches 48%.

In June, 2007, Rizhao was honoured “world clean energy award”(世界清洁能源奖) by the 10th Switzerland Sasel energy summit meeting, which shocked the whole world. Rizhao, a small underdevelopped city, uses more than 500,000 solar water heaters, serving more than 90% of its families. When the organizing committee found Rizhao, they began to study our energy-using model and called for the whole world to learn from us.

Thanks to the climate here, sunny days make up most of the year just as the name Rizhao implies.As a consequence, we make friends with the sun and try to take full advantages of it . Popularizing solar water heaters is the most important way. On one hand, it saves a lot of money for citizens as solar water heaters are cheaper than other kinds of heaters. On the other hand, using the solar energy doesn’t produce exhausted gasses pollutting the air at all.

In addition to the solar energy heater, many streetlights in Rizhao use solar energy, too.They collect the energy from the sun by a board at day and release them at night. It’s a special sight for many people who have never seen this.

Actually, Rizhao is a city devoted to supporting clean energy including solar energy ,the wind, tides, etc.There are beautifull windmills making a charming line near the sea and sending electricity day and night. Rizhao is planning to build one of the biggest windwill generating plant in China, which is approved by all Rizhao people. In another aspect, nearly all the newly-built apartments in Rizhao use geothermal energy(地热能源) other than central heating which consumes lots of coals.

This is my hometown-----a small,young and lively city. It sticks to the idea of buliding our city ecologically which is approved and carried out by all Rizhao people’s associated effort. Great progress in both economy and ecological environment has been made since Rizhao was established as a prefectural city in 19, in which year I was born by coincidence. 

Up to now, I haven’t seen a Rizhao person who is not proud of Rizhao’s sustainable development pattern. I haven’t heard a sentence which is passive about the future of Rizhao. I love my hometown very much and it will be in my heart no matter where I am. When I am depressed and desprited, I always think of the vast sea, the golden sandbeach, and the beautiful blue sky. When I lost myself in the way of pursuing the wrong things, I always think of the simple principle my grandparents and parents taught me. My hometown shows me a happy and healthy lifestyle which I will chrish all my life. As for me,Rizhao is really a spiritual comfort in my heart not just a signal in form.
