It goes without saying that English plays an important role in our modern 

society. English is an international language. Wherever you go, you can hear 

English spoken by many people. From this point of view, it is true that English 

is important to our daily life. Learning English is like learning to swim or 

learning to play ball. Our primary trouble is that we have tackled the study of 

language from the wrong end. We are like the man who thinks he can learn to swim 

only by reading books about swimming. In actuality, we learn by doing. The 

grammatical rules are valuable as we plunge into the language and need some 

assistance. In the same way, advanced instructions about swimming are helpful as 

we learn something from actual experience in the water. But reading books never 

makes a swimmer and learning rules never makes a practical linguist. The regular 

procedure in learning English involves listening first, to be followed by 

speaking. Then comes reading, and finally the writing of the language. The way 

you learn English is much the same as the way you learned your own language. 

First of all you must listen and then repeat and repeat until you can use the 

language easily. In other words, you have to build up language habits in English 

just as you build up English habits in your own language. To sum up, we must 

bear in mind that nobody can learn to swim for you. Nobody can learn to play 

ball for you. Nobody can learn English for you. It's up to you. You must learn 

for yourself and you will learn if you really want to and are willing to 

practice.

　　Nowadays, English has become a universal language. To overcome the language 

barriers is not difficult, if we have a good command of English. A man who 

speaks English owns a valuable tool of communicating with others throughout the 

world. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important for us to learn English 

well. There is no short cut to learning English. The mastery of English can be 

brought about only by daily study and incessant drill. The more we practice it, 

the more progress we will make. Since early childhood, I have begun the learning 

of English. However, I am still not good at English. Because English is not my 

mother tongue and because I usually use Chinese in my daily life, I have little 

chance to practice English. No wonder I make poor progress in the study of 

English. Although I find English difficult to learn, I still keep up interest in 

English. I will do my best to learn it well, for I think a good command of 

English will be helpful to me in the future.

been used by most of the nations in the world. It is true that if we know 

English well, we can communicate with foreigners and do business with other 

countries in the world. This will enable us to increase our international good 

will and understanding. From the above statement, we can be proud that English 

plays a significant role in our modern world. As for learning English, first of 

all we must deeply realize that the most important thing of all in learning 

everything is to have patience, confidence, and perseverance. Learning English 

is like learning to swim or learning to play ping-pong. If you want to swim or 

to play ping-pong well, you must practice it over and over again until you can 

operate or perform it automatically. There is an old saying that practice makes 

perfect. According to the linguist Bloomfield, language learning is 

over-learning; anything else is of no use. To learn to swim merely by reading 

books about swimming is of no service to learners. The learners must have actual 

experience in the water. Thus the learners can easily realize what the 

fundamental action in learning to swim is. All of us know that there are four 

skills in learning English, namely, listening, speaking, reading and then 

writing. It is important for us to understand the relationship among these four 

skills. By setting up listening, speaking, reading and writing in this order, we 

do not imply that one must be able to understand everything before beginning to 

speak. However, by emphasizing the primary importance of listening, we clearly 

indicate that learning to speak is dependent on hearing someone else speak, not 

upon reading orally on the basis of certain "rules of pronunciation." When we 

hear words and expressions from a native speaker, we should of course imitate 

just as closely as possible, so that speaking follows immediately upon 

listening. In addition, another important thing to remember is that it is not 

necessary to begin with a lot of reading and writing in learning English. 

Reading and writing present very special problems which may complicate learning 

for the beginning learner. All in all, English may be said an indispensable tool 

of intercourse. If we know English, this will bring us great convenience. This 

is the reason why there are so many people in our country who learn English.

Many countries in the world have made English the first or second language in 

their native lands. The most difficult thing I meet with in learning English is 

pronunciation. I always confuse some vowels and some consonants, such as [o] and 

[a]. It takes me a long time to correct my pronunciation. By constantly 

practicing, I finally overcome the difficulty and make great progress in 

learning English. English may be a dull, tedious and difficult language to the 

beginner, but there is no royal road to learning English. In learning English, 

perseverance and patience are requisite. The best way to learn English well is 

continuous practice. Try to make use of every opportunity and finally you will 

succeed in learning English.

　　I become interested in learning English when I was a student of junior high 

school. Since then, English has become my favorite course and I began to study 

English harder and harder, I have been used to listening to English teaching

has been growing very fast and also because English is one of the most important 

international language. Some people want to go abroad for seeing sight, and 

others want to do business with foreign traders. Moreover, when diplomatists 

deal with international affairs of attend international meeting, English has 

become an important means of communication with others. In addition, learning 

English also can make us keep in contact with western culture and help us absorb 

new and advanced skill and knowledge. I thing these are the most powerful 

strength to drive people to learn English. To sum up, learning English not only 

make us obtain new advanced knowledge but also keep us informed of the news and 

events which happened a few seconds later all over the world. I am interested in 

learning English and I will continue to learn English all my life because 

learning English is a kind of enjoyment. I keenly realize that in the 

complicated international society, English has become an important means of 

social and commercial intercourse. I have always daydreamed of going abroad to 

take advanced study, and I do hope my dream will come true some day.been growing
